"Having got married at Gretna Green at 11:30, our extremely casually convened wedding arrangements led us here. We had no plan whatsoever; other than to “elope”, or as far as one can do so these days, with four friends to act as witnesses, and go...to Gretna to get married. Having tied the knot, we found ourselves heading home to Teesside, realising that anywhere we could head to to have a meal together was looking unlikely on account of lunchtime service finishing at 2pm. Plans changed. On the motorway. And we’re so glad they did. Upon arrival, dressed in our wedding finery (I guess that most groups of people don’t arrive at the Sun Inn dressed in bow ties, Tweed Suits, some glamour, a kilt and Laboutain heels — the ideal hiking and outdoor pursuits wear) when asked if we were going somewhere nice, we confessed to having got married an hour previously and just fancied some lovely grub and a table for 6. The staff genuinely threw out the red carpet for us. Utterly unprompted. Even when we advised that we didn’t want any fuss. Within 10 minutes a table for six had been prepared with table dressings and fresh flowers and we were ushered through to the dining room. We were all stumped for choice with a lovely menu to choose from; and were probably being a bit greedy in making our choices but, when in “holiday mode” and with a lovely and diverse range of choices to make, we went for staters and mains. All dietary requirements accommodated for where do you start? A coeliac, two vegetarians (one of which is lactose intolerant), the table from hell! But accommodate us they did. And in style. Only one minor hiccup being which a breadbun that wasn’t gluten free but issue resolved. The food was delicious, our travelling companion and curry aficionado deeply impressed with the prawn curry in particular. Just a lovely, lovely experience topped off by one of the regulars in the main bar sending through some wedding favours as a wee gift for us all. Cannot thank the lovely people at the Sun Inn enough for their kindness and hospitality. Made our day completely and yes, we will be making a return trip on “Star Wars Day” (May the Fourth) next year for our first anniversary. Just lovely. In the nicest and best possible way. Thank you all so so much. You made our day."

we just wanted a simple pub dinner, that's what we got at the sun. it is a beautiful traditional cumbrian pub with a good, varied menu. the staff was very helpful, even though very busy.

I stopped by The Sun Inn while in the area. The staff was very welcoming and the beer selection was fantastic. Although we didn't eat, the food being served looked delicious. Definitely a must-visit spot when in Pooley Bridge. Speisekarte ansehen

The staff at this restaurant is very friendly and the pizza is delicious. My husband also enjoyed one of the beers they had on tap. The prices are good and the location is convenient. However, I have to give it 3 stars because the tables need a good cleaning and they should be more diligent about picking up cigarette butts.

Genuinely can’t believe this in such a beautiful village. Service robotic, no atmosphere! Sorry to those eating a meal by the door … don’t know how you coped! Toilets unbelievably disgusting. Never seen or smelt anything like it. The ammonia smell was eye watering...… people who can eat or drink in this place need medals. Towel soaking the sea off **** up off the floor. A bucket would be better! See picture. Health hazard!!

This place was our first choice during a week long holiday in Pooley Bridge. We’ve visited the pub many times and on the majority of visits we’ve had good food. Unfortunately our visit this evening is likely to be our last. The quality of the...food was very disappointing. We had 4 meals and all were bland and overpriced. Had the staff taken the time to ask we would have told them this. They didn’t bother so having paid already we left then vowed not to return. Speisekarte ansehen

we had never been to the sun. our son is autistic, and we were not sure how he was if too busy. friends had recommended the steak and the Ale Pie, and we decided to try it. we came at 445 Friday from...Jubilee. yes, it was busy, they asked for their order, but not too long. had an inside immediately. steak and ale pie fabulous. the specific nutritional needs. but what was outstanding was the care and attention of the staff. thanks for being so understood and friendly.

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
