"For some time we had planned to dine at the Cafe De La Paix in Gensac, but it was the arrival of a house guest that prompted our visit.Reviews from our Tripadvisor reviewers had raised our expectation of a great meal and splendid evening, but the expectation was not realised on the day. I am prepared to say that we were unlucky, perhaps the chefs off day, but alas this was an experience to forget. The cafe has a traditional French exterior which says, "traditional Country French Cooking' so entering through the front door to be greated with a pool table, took the shine of of that. The greeting from the serving lady was warm and friendly and put us at our ease.Yes they had our reservation and showed us to our table, inside with a great view over the terrace to the valley below.A carafe of water arrived, with rather rustic kitchen glasses, it as not really hot outside but the tepod non cooled water did nothing to quench our thirst. The menus arrived, nicely presented, clear and easy to read. we all chose the set menu at €26, the only set menu choice. My colleagues chose the chacutrie for the first course , which consisted of slices of ham a small tranche of pate and a cornichon.I chose the salad Perigordine, which was substantial, but included only a sparse number of gissier, no sliced smoked duck brest, but loads and loads of fried lardons. Two of of us chose the faux filet, cooked exactly as ordered, indeed I wanted mine very blue and the serving lady commented that if it was underdone the chef would cook it some more. It was perfect and had good flavour. But oh dear the potatoes were under cooked and slimmy. Our hostess chose the fish which was excellent but the vegetables were to quote her disgusting'.There was a wide choice of sweets and were unremarkable. We chose a carafe of the local Bordeaux red wine at €12, good quality and a perfect choice. We were made to feel at home, the service was very good and nothing was too much trouble, but alas the Chef had 'lost the plot. day'. No I cannot recommend this restaurant. but am happy to say we hit it on a bad chef day, and no we will not be returning, a great pity returning"
