"We have always eaten at the Ship Inn on our way back from South Wales, because it was a lovely, typically 'rustic ' English ' pub. The former owner Mike and his Manager and Chef, Jane, new their profession and just what their customers wanted simple, very tasty English cuisine and comfort food. It has been three years since we have been and during that time it has changed hands. Oh dear, that 's where our once good experience ended. It is now described as a 'boutique ' pub ? It has been re decorated and re furnished, obviously on a restricted budget and the menu has changed. We have to say that the refurbishment, in our humble opinion, has failed dreadfully. It is cheap and tacky and we were shocked that the beautiful old English wooden beams have been painted in a mushroom coloured emulsion type paint and the new seating is a purple crushed velvet type material with a ring on the back ?? Was this to fasten your dog to? It looks really cheap and tacky. What a pity. There were four of us, one didn 't eat, two had the homemade beefburger and I had the fillet steak with peppercorn sauce. What a pity the ambience of the place didn 't match the food. My steak was perfectly cooked and tasted really delicious. The burgers were definitely home made but the 'consumers ' didn 't like the taste of a herb/ingredient in them. Personally I thought it was very nice, apart from the fact that it was served on a slate !! What is it with restaurants these days? Slates, bowls, wooden blocks ??? Why cant we just eat off a plate ?? Sadly non of the old comfort food dishes like Jane prepared (lamb shanks, steak and kidney pudding, liver and bacon etc.. but never the less, what we ate this week was quite good. However because the ambience and character of the place has been totally ruined, we will sadly not be returning. Needless to say there was not another soul in the place from start to finish. To put the final nail in the coffin for us, they no longer sell Hobson 's beers !!! Sacrilege!"

"The Pepperpot Brasserie is at the White Lion Hotel, bang in the centre of Upton. If your idea of a great meal out is the latest gastro pub built from a catalogue and charging prices that are a step above their rank, then the Pepperpot is probably not for you. If you appreciate really excellent food ranging from the traditional to the innovative at a very fair price and with excellent service in more traditional (but not dated) surroundings then the Pepperpot is the best for miles around. I visited again for a weekday Lunch on the 16 June 2017 and have to say the new menus are better than ever. For starter I had the Duck Confit with Balsamic Roast Plumb (off the Al a Carte menu). It was superb nice crispy skin but the meat lovely and moist. Really tasty and nicely complemented by the plumbs. Would definitely have again. For main course I chose the Gourmet Stack off the Summer Lunch Menu. Try this and you will never want to order a burger again! Forget burgers, this is a beautiful layer of quality Fillet of Beef (really tasty and tender) topped with slices of tender and lightly peppered chicken and finished off with a piece of quality bacon and a little mustard dressing. All served in a bread bun which put the typical burger bun to shame. Just all real good quality meat! Fries on the side together with an mayonnaise and relish to finish it off. A burger at a gastro pub? No thanks, never again! I finished off with a wonderful cheesecake which was server with fresh fruit berries and was golden literally! Yes, topped off with gold leaf. Everything is fresh and if you have any special dietary requirements whether personal choice or medically dictated they will do their very best to accommodate you with style! John and Chris who the White Lion deserve real praise for putting such effort into ensuring that their food is really something special, that the service is efficient and friendly and that the prices are no higher than so many places that just cant compare. They have just celebrated their 20th anniversary running the hotel and restaurant, and with so many places changing hands every few years that is a real testament to their skills and hard work. There are Lunch, Dinner ' Board ', A la Carte and Lunchtime Quick Fix (fixed price) menus plus the obligatory Sunday Lunch Menu. So no excused not to give it a try! I eat out a lot, have been coming here for 20 years and it still has its place at the top of the list!"

"My husband booked this idyllic cottage for our Valentine 's meal. We were made immediately welcome and offered drinks in the cosy bar. I met the resident dog and although I don 't usually 'do ' dogs he was absolutely adorable. The menu was a little limited with four mains, one meat, one chicken, one fish and one vegetarian option, however all sounded equally as tempting.Service was exceptional, we were served quickly and efficiently by the owners, who were very attentive and yet not overly obtrusive. We were seated in the restaurant, by a window which overlooked the floodlit gardens. Our table was decorated with red flowers and candlelit which I thought was nice. We were the only people in the restaurant, which made it feel like my husband had booked the whole place especially for me. However, it was hard to understand why this was so, given the quality of the venue and the food.Starters were excellent, the main was very good, with the best carrots I have every tasted (apparently simply glazed in butter). Only minor gripe would be that the desserts were not quite up to the same standard as the other two courses, but this in no way detracted from what was a very special meal.Prices were about what you would expect for a special occasion, but not something you would perhaps choose to pay everyday. All in all I would thoroughly recommend the restaurant and would quite happily return. The owners were keen to let us know that they serve Pimms on the lawn in the summer and this sounds very tempting. My advice is to give this a go, make an evening of it and enjoy both the hospitality of the owners, the overall excellent cuisine and the intimate atmosphere. Enjoy!"
