"Conveniently close to the hotel where we stayed for the night, we were very happy to find Aladdin’s, Indian dining place. We were very early and the first customers of the evening. The welcome and interior looked promising. We started with an aperitive with some...Papdoms and Pickles Chutneys. They were a nice little mise en bouche, then the main. While my husband loves very hot and spicy food, I prefer not too hot, but I love to guess and recognize the perfumes and flavours. We both chose a Chef’s Choice, to make honour and taste something we did not know so far. I took the chicken Rassam: “cooked with chunks of butternut squash flavoured with chef’s own spices and fresh coriander to taste” (I love coriander my hubby ordered a Chicken Morchi Bhuna, “A pleasant surprise...cooked home-style to chef’s liking” rated 2 peppers hot), our “Essential accompaniments were: Saag Rassam and Mushroom Bhaji, Pilau rice and Egg fried rice…The service was good. The restaurant became quite busy. The meals arrived, it looked very good. I am sorry to say it was “OK”, no “waow effect” for neither of us, as it was really missing flavour, aromas. My husband’s dish was really not spicy at all. We could not detect any chef’s touch, what you can expect when you choose a special. It was not bad, but unfortunately that evening, for us, nothing special either, they might have forgotten the spices at all, it could then be just bad luck. Please make sure your dishes smell and taste more. The staff was very friendly, thank you "

"I took my son there for a steak. On arrival, we were asked if we had made a booking and this was checked up on their screen. As the majority of the tables were empty, I thought they would fill up. However, by the time we left, the majority of the tables were still empty; begging the question as to why reservations were such a big deal on arrival. My son ordered a 12oz fillet steak medium which was butterflied rather than grilled whole which we did not understand as it came from the tail end of the fillet rather than the butt or prime end. I ordered a 12 oz ribeye medium rare. Both steaks came cooked exactly to order. The fillet was reasonably tender but the ribeye had membrane that had not been removed and made it quite tough eating. In addition the ribeye had been marinaded in some form of sweet dark sauce which could be clearly tasted and which spoiled the overall taste of the ribeye steak. The accompanying pepper sauce was rather bland. The fries and sweet potatoes were reasonable, the grilled tomatoes over-cooked and the mushrooms were good. The English mustard requested was in front French and I heard an adjoining table have the same challenge. I do not believe that they had English mustard on that night, or perhaps at all. When the ribeye was pointed out to the waitress, the response was a quite blase Oh really, well I 'll be sure to tell the chef . Apart from that, the service was acceptable to good. The malbec ordered was a little rough but quite good. We ordered tap water which came in spring-top bottles; a rather nice touch. Would I go there again? Possibly for a burger but not if I want a good steak."

"We had a table booked for 6 on Sunday at 1.30pm, when we arrived there was no table for 6 available even though l had booked 4 days in advance. So after a few minutes of moving tables about we finally sat down. A member of staff then came to take our drinks order, this is when things started to go wrong. After 20 minutes the drinks had still not arrived so one of our group went and asked why there was a delay. The drinks then arrived 5 minutes later but while they were being served a glass of wine was split over one of our guests. We felt sorry for the young lady serving us as it was obvious they were under pressure. A further 15 minutes went by before someone came to take our meal order. We had been in the resturant over an hour before our starters arrived, but other groups who had arrived after us had been served their starters but we’re sending them back as they were not what they had ordered. After finishing our starters we continued to wait for our main meal after 30 minutes we asked how long it would be to be told that it was being served as we speak. Then staff came out of the kitchen with food and served other tables and told us it would a few more minutes. At this point we had had enough so we paid for what we drunk and eaten and left. I’m assume the guy the spoke to us as we left was the manager and his reason for the delay in serving food was the heat in the kitchen. Admittedly the outside temperature at the time was 30 degrees but after leaving we went to a Miller and Carter Steakhouse just down the road and had drinks served within 5 minutes and was eating our main course within 20 minutes. We can not blame the staff for any of this as they were just waiting around for the food to be served, l can only assume they did not have enough chefs to meet the demand on the day as we later found out that there had been a function going on at the same time. Until they sort out their staffing problems l would not recommend this establishment, thank goodness we managed to get a proper meal at another resturant nearby."

"Nice venue, good atmosphere, but just lacking a little something. The menu was decently sized, but lacked any sort of lighter-health conscious choice(s). Dogs weren’t allowed in the main dining room area which was nice, but you can still eat with them in the more...causal area. It’s an order at the bar situation(at least at lunchtime), which is fine, but my least preferred. Everyone was nice, personable and relatively efficient. There was a pretty big delay on plate clearing. Which I think is kinda standard on order at the bar gigs, as the staff just aren’t around as much. I got the crispy duck ciabatta which had some really good elements. The duck wasn’t exactly crispy, just sorta cooked. The sauce was brill as was the bread melted cheese. The bread had that crisp exterior but soft warm, cheese glued ooey-gooey middle that was just, actually, sublime. You could have removed the duck and it would probably have been an improvement, none of the ‘is that a piece of fat, or just chewy duck’ bites. Just bready, cheesy -and that little bit of sauce sweetness- goodness. The salad it came with however, a very poor attempt. Lettuce, tomato onion. And not even shredded lettuce just a cracking great big wedge of it shoved in a bowl.. very unappetising. Hey ho. Same jig with the coleslaw. It had to come out of a big ol’ bought in pack. Let’s put it like this, if I bought it from a shop, I wouldn’t repurchase it, ever. After dining here I’m not sure I’ve found out what the ‘twist’ on the traditional country pub is. Nevertheless, good for what it is, could be better but could be lots worse. A solid 4/5. Would return, but I’m not rushing out the door, ya’know?"
