"Booked a meal at the White Horse for a Sunday evening whilst staying in Exford. I had read the reviews about the carvery on Trip Adviser was really looking forward to it.Our table was booked for 6.30pm. With hindsight this was probably a mistake. We walked into an extremely busy bar with a queue of people waiting to be served. When we eventually got to the front of the queue, a very pleasant member of staff took us to our table. He informed us that we would have to order our food at the bar once we had made our food choice, therefore having to queue again.I had the carvery, my partner the ham egg chips. The latter dish was very good, great quality ham and well cooked chips. My carvery however was very disappointing. The beef and pork on offer were both lovely. The vegetables not great. The only green vegetable on offer was frozen peas , the carrots, potatoes and cauliflower cheese were average at best, the Yorkshire puddings were frozen shop bought, for the price of the carvery I would have expected home made. In my opinion I have had a better meal and paid much less for it at a Toby Carvery!!The White Horse itself is a lovely building with a very busy and noisy bar, not the place for a quiet meal. Possibly I made a mistake by booking at one of their busiest times, an hour later the bar was much quieter.Staff were friendly enough and food once ordered arrived quickly, just a shame the carvery was such a disappointment."

I visited the restaurant in the late evening and found a nice, relaxed atmosphere with many locals. The food was delicious and the staff were friendly.

Lovely looking building, very impressive. Limited choice of wines and gins (no local gins on offer eg Wicked Wolf). However superb range of whiskies. Its a shame that the hanging baskets and planters overlooking the river were full of dried up dead plants and flowers, slightly spoiling the overall impression.

Good food, dog friendly, friendly staff. Just took quite a long time to get drinks at the bar, when our food came we asked the waitress for another drink, she told us to go to the bar, but because our food had just come and we knew it was a long wait we just went with out. Apart from that lovely interesting pub. Loved all the black and white hunting pics! And the log burner! Lovely.

We had a coffee, latte, coke and a glass of tap water the man serving was abrupt and i felt he was doing us a favor by taking my money, it was a hot day but there was no ice for the coke and the coke was flat but this was lucky because both the coffee and latte were cold worst i have ever had any were in the world we had eaten here a few years ago and found it poor service and poor food then but it has got worse! We had an excellent weekend stay at this establishment. We dined in the lively and bustling bar on our first night, and in the restaurant on our second night. Both meals were freshly prepared and delicious, with a great selection of beers and wines. The service throughout the hotel was top-notch, especially when my husband fell ill suddenly. The staff went above and beyond to accommodate him, even preparing and delivering food to our room at no extra charge. The inn is beautifully decorated, with charming interior design and artwork that reflects the building's history. Overall, it was a fantastic base for exploring the beautiful Exmoor area. Trudy W.

After passing this way last Autumn I promised myself to return in the Summer. The building dates to the 16th century in parts and is beautiful as is the location and pretty village. The staff are very friendly, the bar area roomy and of typical old world charm. the bar menu looked good including locally sourced produce including trout. After a drink outside by the river which was quite low due to the long Summer food was ordered inside. Beef, pork and venison were on the carvery menu £10.95). I opted for leg of venison which is an unusual offering, the carver sliced a reasonable amount off the moist underside. You then help yourself to the veg, Yorkshires, roast or new spuds and gravy. The George Inn

The George Inn

"Yet again we needed to celebrate having resolved a long standing technical problem. The pub in Brompton Regis came up in discussion the evening before when our neighbour was around for a glass of wine. He said that before coming to our village he’d looked at houses in Brompton Regis. He left and we booked a table. Friday was a damp day but we were not deterred as we drove up into the Brendon Hills, usually distant views greet one but this day the clouds were dominant. However as we descended from Roborough Gate towards Wimbleball Lake we could turn off the wipers. By the time we crossed the bridge at the top of the lake a shaft of sun broke through and sparkled across the surface of the water whilst light wisps of mist kissed the shore line. Rounding the churchyard wall always raises our expectations for there is the George Inn. The bar door was hardly open before Tash, a beaming smile, greeted us with a price board for ‘COFFEE’. I said in my previous review that I wouldn’t mention coffee at the George again, sorry, but I must. The coffee machine had arrived the day before. Well done Tripadvisor the George! We had a wonderful starter of Baba Ganoush, new to the menu that day. It was exceptionally good with delicate flavour. Following on was chicken breast and pasta with tomato sauce, again great flavour though my wife found it a little too greasy. My Bengal curry was fantastic and a most generous serving. Our ‘Desert,’sic, was Chocolate Ganache with pistachio ice cream under crunched nuts. I had the steamed maple syrup pudding set in a delicious whisky sauce, a very delicate and light texture, just right to finish on after the curry! Of course we had our long awaited espressos from the new device, a delicious finale to our meal. Earlier in walkers had dropped in wanting a coffee. Now all on Exmoor should be heading to the George for their ‘hit’."
