"We went here for dinner to celebrate our wedding anniversary, having heard good things. We had been looking forwards to trying it since moving to the local area a few months ago. The evening started well the waitress was friendly, prompt, and efficient, and we were seated at a nice table upstairs. We both ordered the 2 course option from the main menu: slow braised venison for the main and chocolate ‘oblivion’ for dessert. When we were ordering, we asked the waitress about the portion sizes, and she said that they were decent, and that one set of truffle and parmesan chips to share alongside the mains should be enough for both of us, as the venison came with mashed potato. When the mains arrived, we noticed that the portion size was on the small side – what we’d expect for a starter, rather than a main. The venison dish featured venison cooked two ways on the bone and venison sausage. The accompaniments celeriac puree, smoked bacon, caramelised shallot, and jus were very nice. The venison on the bone was lovely; however, with only three mouthfuls of meat (the rest being bone and gristle tendon , there just wasn’t enough of it! Especially as I found the venison sausage quite offensive and couldn't finish it. On the plate there was no mashed potato – we checked the menu again afterwards and confirmed that it was celeriac puree. For the waitress to confuse celeriac for potato is poor form. The serving size of the chips was on the small size (as with the main and we felt that we’d been forced into paying £5 extra for a side, over and above the £42 price for two courses, because there was no carb on the plate. We were still hungry after the main but hoped that the chocolate ‘oblivion’ for dessert would be a decent size. The mint choc chip ice cream was delicious very minty and the dish came with a lovely crunchy dark chocolate tuile. However, the chocolate cake was poor – dense and heavy, with no observable leavening agent, it was one step above having a block of solid chocolate on the plate. The dark chocolate sauce that accompanied the dish was sickly and overpowering, given the dark chocolate cake and dark chocolate tuile. Chocolate oblivion indeed – not in a good way! For drinks, I had a glass of wine (New Zealand Pinot Noir , which was lovely, but my husband was disappointed with his pineapple and rum cocktail – very heavy on the rum and soda water, with barely any pineapple. For £10 we expected better. The bill came to just over £120. We felt short changed and finished the meal wanting. The portion sizes were stingy – during the meal we both joked that when we got home, we would be raiding the Christmas supply of cheese and crackers to fill ourselves up! There’s a problem when the trimmings on the plate the celeriac puree, bacon, shallot and jus in the case of the main, and the ice cream and tuile in the case of the dessert – outshine what should be the main stars of each course (the venison and the cake ! We settled the bill and left without saying anything mean to the staff, but we were both so disappointed. It’s been a long time since I’ve felt so let down by a meal. Not the way I wanted to celebrate our anniversary at all, although it did give us plenty to talk about on the way home! We wished we’d gone to the Henry Potts or to the Architect in the centre of Chester instead – both are excellent, with fantastic bistro style food and generous main portions (in the case of the Henry Potts, I've never had enough room left to make it through to ordering dessert! . Eating out at either is much better value for money and a more satisfying dining out experience. Needless to say, we won’t be going back to the Sticky Walnut again."

Had the two course lunch. The turkey roast was delicious and the creme brulee was enormous! Excellent service and food.

Had a lovely lunch on the January offer of 2 courses for £15. Service was excellent and food enjoyable. Only downside was realising after leaving that the 10% service charge was charged at £10 for a £40 meal...

Excellent dinner and wine selection good selection of dishes across a 3 course meal for 4, including one vegan. Waiting staff were knowledgeable about the menu, steak and halibut were cooked beautifully. Also pleased to see a restaurant unafraid of using vegetables to showcase good quality vegan dishes. Will visit again when next in the Chester vicinity.

£50 for two courses as we had the steak. My truffled Jerusalem artichoke and Welsh rarebit on brioche toast was so underwhelming, they did actually take it off the bill. Lacked flavour and really needs some more imagination, as you feel you could cook better at home. Its fine to charge £50 for two courses, but we were stuck on a table at the top of the stairs where everyone hangs their coats and is also next to the toilets. If you charge top money, then there shouldn't be a bad table in the place. Service was quite pleasant, but I would not take my chances on giving it another go. Shame.

Wanting to support independent business, the Sticky Walnut should be the ideal place to enjoy an outstanding meal, especially given the various accolades it has received over the past years. It is however, an over priced, over hyped, disappointing restaurant with under educated staff who are inept at guiding you through the over ambitious menu. I say over ambitious, as they do not succeed in delighting you with the mouth watering description on the menu. Unfortunately portion size, mistakes and general inability appear to shine through and this takes the sheen off some potentially excellent cooking. I’m sure if the actual chef was there the whole experience would have been wonderful, but unf...

Hearing great reviews about sticky walnut and Gary usher, my partner and I decided to pay the restaurant a visit during our trip to Chester. Great decor, nice vibe and friendly FOH. Welcomed and seated and drinks order taken. We decided to go for the bistro menu and have two course. My partner had the fish cake which she said was lovely. I unfortunately had a nightmare with my arancini.... I found two hairs inside of it, not to mention the heavily over cooked arborio ride, which made mush and not what I was expecting. Moving on to mains...I had the coley and I really enjoyed this. Fish cooked perfectly and a great balance in the sauce. Sadly, my Mrs had the crispy chicken. The skin was left...

We had a family meal here for a party of six. Atmosphere Convivial and living up to it's aim of being a neighbourhood bistro. Food For the table: The following were declared to be good or very good: rosemary and thyme focacia; medjool dates wrapped in smoked bacon, gordal olives. Starters: butternut squash roasted with baharat spice, truffled Jerusalem artichoke and Welsh rarebit on brioche toast, cauliflower soup although served luke-warm . Mains: Pan-roasted cauliflower with sumac, pan-fried cod fillet, 35-day-aged sirloin of beef to share. I would describe my main of halibut fillet as containing too much broth, making it more of a miso dish. Had I known this, I would not have ordered it....

"I booked a table for 2 really last minute on a busy December night, piccolio’s manger cosimo took the booking, he was so friendly and helpful that we really needed after a hard work in the cold winter weather! we went in and the restaurants that were breathtaking have woken us! the decor is stylish and above all it was so warm and cozy what we needed, we were greeted with smiles all around by every worker and was immediately taken on our table, without waiting time what ever! we were so swollen! Shortly after we sat, we tamara welcomed them beautiful, well presented and extremely polite. we thought up the menu, while tamara served us the most delicious Rosè Prosecco and took our orders. it was a hard choice, as we wanted to order one of all, the menu choices sound exquisite! so much choice and catering for all food requirements. my own and my friend decided to go for the spaghetti frutti di mare, which was absolutely inconceivable! muddle, mush and calamari topped with a huge garlic king prawn! it didn't take long until there were two empty teller and full bell! we stayed and talked together about the life and there was no hurry to move us from table to tamara has checked us we were so glad to have chosen piccolino chester for our girly dinner date and just wanted to say a massive thank you to cosimo, tamara and the piccolino team. I can't wait to come back to another fantastic evening."
