"Only 11 miles from where we live we had never heard of Kingstone but my wife decided to book an early evening meal here based on the pub being in the Good Beer Guide. Initial thoughts on entering were that the pub was friendly with a comfortable feel about it and friendly staff and customers. I’m going to have to split my review into three. Firstly the beer I had a porter from the Uttoxeter Brewery and a blond from Dancing Duck in Derby. Both well kept and excellent. Secondly the food my starter was salt and pepper squid with a chilli sauce dip. Crispy and delicious. My main a smoked haddock risotto with broccoli. Now my wife is a vegetarian so I’m not allowed stinky fish in the house so I will always pick it in a restaurant. This was absolutely gorgeous and topped with a perfectly poached egg which when cut through dripped yolk down into the rice. Food porn at its best. Thirdly the staff all young ladies serving in a very busy environment but so beautiful, friendly, efficient and kind. Where do all these lovely girls come from? I may have to move to Kingstone (just don’t tell the wife)."

We received a lovely warm welcome at this restaurant, both us and our dog. We felt very welcomed and the food was impeccable! They even spoiled our dog.

The food at this restaurant is top-notch and the service is excellent. It's impressive to see skilled chefs cooking fresh dishes in a pub. We enjoyed our experience so much that we returned the next evening.

The best fish pie ever and believe me I have tasted many on my travels. Absolutely delicious and full of fish in a perfect sauce with a crispy topping. I cannot praise it enough so if you are a fish pie fan you need to visit the Shrewsbury Arms.

Been here a few times, service not the quickest. Tonight worse than ever, had to wait half an hour before our order was taken then another 35 minutes for food to arrive. Appreciate they were short staffed so maybe don’t take so many bookings. Shame, won’t be back

We regularly pay a visit to “the shrew” We are never disappointed . We often take friends family and are never disappointed. We have different meals each time and can recommend anything on the menu. The staff are 1st class and nothing is too much trouble. Dog children friendly.

We had the most fantastic meal! Absolutely faultless! Great value for money as well. Despite it being bank holiday and it was very busy, the staff were wonderful and the service was exemplary. I wish we lived closer so we could visit more often! Wish I could give this place 10 stars!

We booked the Shrewsbury Arms on spec for a friends catch up, as it was central for our group to travel to. It was very welcoming and comfortable. The restaurant was busy, (and it was mid-week). There was a little wait for food as everything is freshly prepared. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the food was excellent. Portion size is good, which unfortunately meant I couldn’t manage a pudding! We will definitely be going back.

This was our first time visiting this charming village pub. Upon arrival, the bar and restaurant were very busy. We were greeted warmly by the friendly staff. The decor and atmosphere were inviting. Although there was a 40-minute wait for our roast beef dinners, the food was excellent and well worth it. The roasted root vegetables and gravy were perfect, although the beef was a bit too pink for our liking. The portions were generous, so we unfortunately had no room left for dessert, which looked amazing as well. The attentive staff made sure that everything was to our liking, which really stood out in terms of customer service. The pub has lovely seating areas both in the front and back. The...

This was our first ever visit after found this pub on Tripadvisor despite it only being 15 mins dive from us. When we arrived, the first thing I noticed was how busy it was and how young all of the staff were. These young people were ALL exemplary and could teach many of their seniors a thing or two about service. They were all lovely without gushing. We were particularly impressed by David who was relatively new but doing a sterling job. We had five courses between us. Of all five courses I could only make a minor criticism of the way that the squid had been cooked even though it was ok. Everything else was really excellent. The cherry on this cake is the deserts which are all made on the p...

"Our room faced the front of the hotel, and while the village was quiet with only two pubs and a small corner store, it seemed to be a shortcut for heavy vehicles speeding downhill at night, with headlights constantly illuminating our room. We also found out that the hotel closes in the evening if it's not busy, and the front door may be locked as early as 10 PM, requiring a code for re-entry. The internet service was poor; even standing just outside the front door, I had no reception and couldn't call the emergency numbers posted there. It appears that the quality of the rooms varies significantly, with some having been upgraded while others are less desirable, including our own. When we questioned our bill because we didn't think the room was worth £140, we were told that since we had booked through Charming Escapes, we should take it up with them, as the hotel receives only a fraction of what we paid. This made us feel like second-class guests, especially since it seemed we were stuck in a low-quality room. The standard rate for a double room is £90, and if I were to rate our experience like on the TV show "Four in a Bed," I would say £50 a night would have been generous. Previous reviews also mentioned an issue with the door handle and the ability to lock the room, which had not been fixed. If you’re just looking for a place to dry off your hiking boots, this hotel might suffice, but I wouldn't recommend staying here again. It has a lot of potential, and thankfully, we had a wonderful evening at The Devonshire Arms just across the street—it felt like a whole different experience. It seems the staff at Charles Cotton have simply given up."
