"What a gem! Arrived 20 minutes before closing team to be greeted and seated with a warm welcome. A delicious homemade pie and chips, with the perfect balance of cheeses. Which is often not the case as many pies are too cheesy. Lovely staff too. Will certainly be back next time we're in the area. And I suggest any hungry walkers do the sams. "Dreadful Sunday Roast beef is all well done (no pink option). Roast Pork, but no crackling with it, so had to settle for Turkey and trimmings which was all lukewarm and came with vegetables that had been boiled within an inch of their life. Complained but seemed to fall on deaf ears. A free coffee at least should have been in order. Overall, more akin to a hospital dinner than a nice Sunday roast. Won’t be back"

"Maybe I just went on a busy night given all the good reviews but not seeing it myself. Scallops starter was fine, the main pasta meal could have been knocked up on a £3.50 budget of Tesco value stock. Wine was insanely overpriced for what was on offer. Anyone smoking/vaping was herded out the back in the pitch black with no light up some steep steps because they clearly didn’t want anyone out the front (fair enough but at least offer a viable and safe alternative). Had to ask repeatedly for water on the table and they forgot to bring out one of the party’s main meal. £42 service charge at the end and I’m not entirely sure what that was for because the service provided was the bare minimum. Place was absolutely packed so they must be doing something right but I definitely couldn’t see what it was."

"We were staying in Hayfield at an Airbnb cottage and wandered up the road to find this pub. The name made us wonder if it was going to be a bit of a boozer but when we went inside we were pleasantly surprised. On arrival, we were shown to our table and given details on the specials and our drinks order taken. The menu was typical of a pub which had some old favourites and a couple of fish dishes on offer. We both chose a goats cheese starter. For the mains my partner went for the chicken in a beautifully creamy sauce and I had traditional fish and chips with mushy peas. All absolutely delicious! For pudding we asked one of the very helpful, smily waitresses her opinion on the best dessert and she suggested the Malteasers cheesecake. My partner had that and I had the blueberry cheesecake perfect! The staff are very friendly and smiley, they make time to have a chat with you and the food and service was excellent. We would highly recommend visiting this pub and if ever visiting Hayfield again we will be back!"

"The Pack Horse is a rare gem that seems to balance being BOTH a terrific pub full of locals and tourists, AND a Fine Dining Experience without any hint of pretention. Pretty much everything about our experience was great. It is quite expensive, but IMHO it's worth it. We had a cocktail each a cocoa espresso martini and a signature old fashioned. Both were outstanding with surprising flavours that really worked. The 3 course menu is £52pp (August 2024) and definitely worth it, in that it includes a pre starter (we had a fantastic gazpacho with home baked bread and herby butter). The wine list is quite pricey but there are excellent choices by the glass. Service was great. This is not just a(nother) gastro pub."
