"On a day trip to Chester, we decided on a pub lunch and found The Victoria Pub just next to the High Cross. The pub layout was traditional, with low ceilings, thick wooden beams, and uneven floors. It had a unique atmosphere. There was no welcome, as such. I asked where we could sit, and I was told, pleasantly enough, by a rushed member of staff. Despite this, the staff, overall, were kind and helpful. I ordered a traditional lunch of cod, chips, and mushy peas, with a side of “crusty” bread, while my wife had steak and ale pie and chips, with a side of onion rings. After a short wait, the orders arrived. The chips were a good size, a reasonable amount, and tasted good. The mushy peas were sweet and tasty (I hope they were homemade). The fish was nice; however, the batter was quite greasy, meaning the fish itself didn’t “crumble” it was a bit moist. Although it appeared to be a good size, it was disappointing to cut 2 or 3 cm from the end before eventually getting to the fish. Two slices of bread were included but were not from a crusty loaf. For my wife, again, there were a good amount of chips. The steak and ale pie may need redefining as I don’t think “pie” is the right word. It arrived in a traditional steak and ale pie dish the meat was nice; however, it got lost in the vast amount of gravy that was in the dish, which also made it difficult to eat with a knife and fork. I think the qualification for it to be a pie was the thin, dry rectangle of pastry laid on top of the gravy. The onion rings were from a frozen pack rather than being made fresh. Overall, we weren’t looking for supreme quality. We wanted a pub lunch to see us through the journey home, and that’s what we got. For that, it’s suitable."

"Booked a few months ago for a special Christmas Eve meal whilst we are away in Chester. Chose off the normal menu, waiter didn’t say anything about a Christmas set menu. He came back to ask my hubby what he had chosen as he had only written ‘steak’ down! Starters were ok delivered separately bizarrely by two people at different times, however the pasta was dry. Mains came, one burger and one slow cook pork belly, again delivered separately at different times! The burger was on a cold plate but ok. The pork belly dish was very odd, 3 types of cabbage, no potatoes and the pork was very fatty and gelatinous not crispy at all. We raised this with another member of staff who agreed it didn’t seem right. He took the plate way and then came back with two menus asking which one we had ordered as the pork off the set menu was different. I said it was off the main menu so he disappeared and brought back a steaming hot plate of what had been expected however the actual pork was still very fatty and gelatinous and mainly inedible. The main issue now was my hubby’s meal was now stone cold and also inedible. The meal was ruined and our planned evening too. When raising the concerns no one actually apologised, just gave weak explanations. What a shame as we had such high expectations having been here before with fond memories. Suffice to say we did not pay and left disappointed to drown our sorrows in a local pub!"

"Thought I'd try this place a go with my friend. We both ordered spaghetti carbonara.... Sauce was horrible and runny. Garlic bread was extremely thick and stodgy, was bigger than the plate itself. Obviously cheap cubes of chicken, several pieces including some chopped up bacon... more than the meal itself!! Pay £17.50 for this dish you'd expect much better quality, tasted super cheap and chef hasn't put much thought into it, just pure laziness! Shocking!! We got served by this young girl as a waitress, yes I know she asked how our meal was but that was right at the beginning when we didn't have a chance! Me and my friend decided after a few mouthfuls how poor our meal was. I didn't eat it all, I did eat all of that pasta because I was starving and my friend barely had half. I left a lot of the chicken, bacon and sauce behind as well as the super stodgy garlic bread. When the young girl took our plates at the end, she asked how the meal was and my friend said we weren't impressed with the sauce. The young waitress was incredibly rude and passive aggressive, made it clear she was peeved off with us. She had a go because we didn't say at the beginning, well yeah because we were barely into a meal! I'm so annoyed how she reacted, my friend was just telling the truth politely and she was so horribly rude, really not acceptable! Never had such an expierence in my life whilst going out for meals out! The waitress didn't apologise, didn't pass anything on and walked off in a huff. Disgusting behaviour. We payed a lot of money for this as well, not happy with meal and service."
