"Me and my partner have often been visiting this pub in lovely Wivenhoe village over the last 3 years. Unfortunately every year since and every time the food gets worse incrementally and I don't know of this is consistent with the change of kitchen staff. The local ale and beer selection has been lovely and the beer fest they often host in the back garden also has a great beer selection. However this last visit was really bad. We booked a table for Sunday roast and we were sat in direct view of serving staff and got ignored for the first half an hour despite it being early on Sunday and barely having any tables to serve. It wasn't until my partner had to make staff aware that we were sat there. No proper greeting like older times and no cutlery or general hospitality provided. We kind of brushed it off as we taught its younger, teenage servers who looked inexperienced. The wait for the food was quite long and the roast was extremely mediocre despite the recent price hike which is not just (cost of living) related and shouldn't be in my opinion as competing country pubs have similar prices and majorly better food quality and portion size. Small portion of meat, beef was sinuie and very tough. It was difficult to cut and chew despite it being on the rare side which should make it more tender. The vegetables used to come separate, unlike this time around where we were served poorly overcooked small portion of fine julienne carrots and horribly overcooked frozen broccoli florets. Gravy was really scarce and barely dowsing the plate, Yorkshire pudding was flat and tasted like it was frozen and microwaved, also cold. The wine offer we chose was a bottle of red not opened infront of us. The server seemed to be in a rush and didn't even wait until our order was finished and just rudely turned around. The specials board dessert for the day (apple crumble) had ran out which is a bad impression of kitchen management as it was really early on in the day in terms of Sunday roast food service which lasts till 5pm and this was a 2pm booking. We ordered the other special dessert for the day (creme brulee) which was runny, watery and sugar loaded which was a bit sickly. The shortbread it came with was fresh out of the oven but the dough inside was undercooked/raw and again way too sugary. The tables around us seemed to be finished with most of their plates still full which was also not a good impression. We got asked if the food was okay multiple times by the same server which was also excessive and annoying. I wouldn't come back here again personally as there is much better competition around this area and even affordable good food/michellin star pubs. I would advise people to avoid the mediocre food, rather maybe have a drink if the bar staff could actually come around ti ever taking your order. Shame really, they should realise that a lot of people can cook a roast better at home it's not something you can avoid criticism about as it's a Great British Classic."

"We stayed for 3 nights here in a ground floor room. The hotel is well kept and has a lovely setting, and very peaceful. The grounds are well cared for, and everything was kept clean whilst we were there. Rooms are spacious and well equipped. note there is no air conditioning in the room which in the high temperatures of summer can be uncomfortable. We were provided with a fan for our room) The staff here are very welcoming and excellent ambassadors for the company, nothing was too much trouble. The food at both restaurants was very good, in fact superb to be honest, and would recommend a stay here to include dining at both Milsoms and Le Talbooth. Transfers to and from the restaurants was rapid without any real waiting around. There is no bar facility so bring your own nightcap! Or enjoy one before returning home. It feels a very safe place to rest and rejuvenate. Swimming pool was a treat with lunch delivered and again very tasty. We enjoyed both the room service continental breakfast and the traditional menu at Milsoms, both excellent quality. A few minor details were disappointing for me personally which I intend to take up with the hotel directly, and are only constructive to make this place even more enjoyable, but to be frank they wouldn’t prevent myself or my lovely wife from staying here again. We read so many complaints on trip advisor about all sorts of small issues which could easily be resolved directly with the hotel, and yet many use this platform in a biased way, with the hotel not able to respond and rectify. We are confident that you will have a very pleasant experience here and no doubt be well looked after, and more importantly, will recommend and return. Very pleasant few days. Thank you Milsom family."

"We arrived for our meal and advised we were waiting for the third person in our party to join us, so they offered us a drink while we were waiting. We were then asked about 3 more times if we wanted to go to the table, which we declined as we were early anyway. When our other guest arrived, we advised the host that we were now ready, and he said to come to the table, only to then turn around and tell us that they weren't ready for us and to wait. We were taken to the table about 3 minutes later. The table was clean and laid for 3 as booked. It's a very contemporary decor. I ordered the smoked haddock on a broadbean and pea risotto, followed by the Monkfish and Cod scampi and chips. Our guest ordered the Goats cheese Crostini and Chicken Parmesan with a truffle Mac and Cheese. The smoked Haddock was nicely cooked, if a little bland and the risotto well made. The Goats Cheese Crostini went down well too! The Scampi was nicely cooked and flavourful, and the chips were perfection. The only things that brought it down was the mushy peas were cold and the dipping sauce for the scampi had a skin on it presumably it had been sitting under a heat lamp. The Chicken Parmesan was well cooked; the fried egg was nicely cooked and the Mac Cheese very tasty. I had the Kiwi and Lime Posset, my partner had the Chocolate Delice and our guest had the autumn berry gateau. The only issue with the dessert was the gateau was that our guest couldn't finish it! Not a problem. Tea and coffee were served, my only observation here is to let the tea brew a bit before pouring! Service: Very attentive waitresses, they checked back with us at nicely spaced intervals and cleared empty glasses etc. promptly. Very friendly and professional, the only thing that I could see was that there's too many people serving each table so the trainee isn't getting the true feel for serving. I also observed the tutors serving customers too while trainees stood chatting. To sum up, it's a good meal, good value for money and we will return!"
