"We were a family group of 6 who had Sunday lunch recently. We have eaten here on many occasions and have found the food to be delicious and generous portions. The serving staff appear to be students; they were efficient, friendly and attentive which was great. Just a couple of observations, the hotel is quite traditional in its style which I love, but I do feel the conservatory needs an update. The cushions on some of the chairs have totally lost their padding so you could feel the base of the chair while sitting on it. One of the little tables wobbled so much that you put your drink on the table it was likely to tip over, we managed to find something to prop the table to prevent our drinks from tipping over. The flooring looks dated and this area could be updated inexpensively. The majority of our group had roast beef which was delicious, with lots of fresh vegetables, the portion sides were generous. A couple of the group ordered sticky toffee pudding but when it came it didn’t look like any sticky pudding we had ever tasted before, it was more like 2 slices of fruit cake, (it was served with ice cream). However I did eat it and it was nice but it tasted like fruit cake not sticky toffee pudding. This was a minor blip, all the other desserts my family had looked great and tasted great too. I would recommend the restaurant and I am sure we will return for lunch when we are next visiting the area."

"Dropped into The Hideout whilst on a few days away in The Lake District, there were four of us and we fancied a quick cuppa but unfortunately there was nothing timely about this place. We chose a table and sat down, previous customers dirty cups still on the table we sat at did not get cleared away. Two lads working behind the counter, two customers already in, one lad working there was busy rushing around not getting much accomplished, the other was busying himself with some Tupperware boxes, even though no customers were being served anything from them. After about twenty five minutes the first of our 2 coffees arrived, the kids were still waiting for their milkshakes which were sitting half-made behind the counter, had I discovered then the amount of bluebottles that infested the place we 'd probably have declined them! After no less than half an hour one of the lads who worked there came rushing back through the café door carrying Oreos and Kinder Buenos from a shop next door, he then proceeded to put these in the blender with the liquid from the half made glasses of milkshake off the counter before bringing them over for the kids, as it turned out, blending milk and biscuits passes as a milkshake, and takes half an hour! As we were on our holidays we didn 't complain but really should have as the time taken to serve us was beyond belief for what needed to be done. Before leaving i decided to quickly nip to the loo, was rather confused when the door named 'toilet ' led me into the kitchen, I then spotted the toilet which was absolutely swarming with bluebottles and a full fly strip of them hanging in the corner. As this room is adjacent to the kitchen I am certain these flies pose a risk to the food also. In a word disgusting, i would not come back in here again. As I was walking away I noted that two new customers were sitting at the table we just vacated, they now had both our dirty cups and the previous punters adorning their space!Aptly named 'The Hideout ' ...I think the owners should be in hiding."

"It went wrong as soon as we walked through the door and the very flustered chap on reception just seemed to go to pieces. Had we booked. He didn't know if they were serving lunches. He just kept repeating that a Chinese tour was coming in later and how would he cope. Everything seemed a bother. This review will come as no surprise to the staff as I spoke at length to the charming manager and he was in complete agreement about the lunch I was served. This was meant to be a lamb and chickpea curry but they'd used belly of lamb so it was a dry bowl of lamb fat with masses of chickpeas. The manager offered to change it but it is a very small menu and had nothing I wanted so I opted for the fish and chips as this was the quickest thing to cook and my husband was halfway through his meal. The fish was ok if slightly greasy but the fries were undercooked. This was accompanied by the most bizarre bowl of florescent green mush which turned out to be inedible, dried out, mashed up garden peas. No staff around so I had to go all round the hotel in search of a waiter. I was offered a bottle of water which I assumed they were giving me then I noticed on the bill they charged £5 for it. In fairness they didn't charge for one of the meals but as it was inedible that seemed reasonable. The views are stunning hence the one star but avoid eating here. This in no way lives up to the McDonalds name."

"After an excellent spa day last year, courtesy of a TravelZoo deal, my friend and I decided to treat ourselves again but to stay overnight this time. Despite some problems (entirely self made on my part with the booking! , the staff could not have been more helpful, changing things round for us before we arrived in order to suit our needs. Our twin room was a decent size with plenty of space for stuff and two chairs to sit on (so much nicer than always perching on the bed , a kettle and plenty of tea, and a local guide. The hotel guide in the room is a little dated though... We were given a brief tour of the facilities on arrival, and decided to eat in the bistro for dinner advised to book, we were fairly surprised to turn up at the alloted time and find it almost empty, but no matter! The food was tasty and well priced, and the service was good. The dark chocolate tart was to die for! After dinner, we made ourselved at home on the sofas and played our version of trivial pursuit, drawing several other guests into the fun! The waitress came through from the bar to sort us out some drinks, which was a nice touch. When we wanted extra hot chocolate to make in our room, Mark on reception was able to sort that out for us. A good night 's sleep, a great breakfast, and we headed to the spa for our TravelZoo day (yes, another one. We like a deal! . Some reviews seem to suggest that being on a deal leads to subpar service. This was genuinely not the case at all. There was no point where we were made to feel less because we had paid less. Lunch in the bistro was delicious again; our massages were great; we left happy. Our only mistake was not staying for longer. We 'll work on that."

"We came to Appleby for a walk round the old streets and shops, however the weather had other plans and torrential rain made us look for somewhere dry for a leisurely lunch instead. We were a party of two adults, two OAPs, three small children and a dog. Tourist information recommended this restaurant as a place that would be suitable for all. On my first recce the lady behind the bar was very friendly and helpful, showed me the bar menu, but also said they could cater for the children with half portions and do any sort of sandwich/soup/side dish for any of our party that didn't want a full meal. I trooped our whole party in, wet coats, small people, excited dog and all. Luckily for us the first floor is divided into small sections, bar, lounge, reception, and there was a private space with no one else eating in it, and we all sat there so we didn't disturb the people eating in the bar. Despite some of the party originally not wanting a lot to eat, the menu looked so good and the day was so miserable, we all chose full meals. The seafood fan had an enormous bowl of mussels in a spicy tomato sauce, and the other adults had macaroni cheese and hotpots. The small people all got ham sandwiches and chips, which they loved. The food came quickly, and was really good. I had the macaroni cheese, which was delicious, the sauce was creamy, topped with tomato and grilled to perfection, and served with a big chunk of bread and butter. Just the sort of cosy comfort food the day demanded. The staff were lovely, made a fuss of the children and dog, and we were made to feel really welcome."
