"on 07.10.2017 we went as a family. we were immediately set by very friendly staff. the place was very busy, but our drink order was immediately removed after we had received our drinks, our food order was accepted. they didn't have to wait long, even though they were really busy. when the food came, it was hot and looked nicely presented, it was beautiful has nothing bad to say. I would not hesitate to recommend to any of my friends or family."

"Four of us dropped in unplanned and unbooked on Friday evening and what a great chance encounter. The owner met us at the bar and when we said we didn't have a reservation he said he had on spare table and was really friendly and welcoming. It was a bit odd at first as there was a local band on (Electric Sheep and they were excellent) but the place is very much set up for dining. Once I got over this and we ordered food we all had an absolutely brilliant evening. The food was good and reasonably priced. Lovely old pub with a lot of character (and characters) and the evenings entertainment was fabulous. First time visiting but will definitely look out for more band nights as this was the best night out in quite a while. Big thanks to the manager and all the staff for making room for us and making us feel welcomed."

"Food was lovely as always and staff are very friendly. But there was a large party in, and it was very very noisy along with the very loud music it was unbearable to sit in there. people were walking in for a table and walking out again because of the noise. They lost a lot of customers because of this . I think this party should have been upstairs to make as much noise as they liked but it disturbed all the other customers I mentioned it when I paid and was told there was nothing they can do about it Yes you can there's a upstairs, put noisy party's up there instead of in the middle of the restaurant disturbing people while they eat."

"I visit Hartlepool from London several times a year and always make a beeline for this lovely cafe. The staff are friendly and the coffee is delicious they know how to make a decent espresso which isn't a given in many cafes. I recommend the gorgeous vegan chocolate sponge pudding ask them to heat it up. Goes nicely with coffee. Thankyou to all the staff."

"My wife I visited the restaurant a few days ago for my 70th birthday. It was our first visit we decided to try it after seeing a glowing review in the Evening Gazette. We weren't disappointed! Drink wise I had 2 large Cabernet Sauvignon red wines my wife, the driver, stuck to diet cokes. There were some special offers available on the night we visited (Tuesday) but we decided, as it was a special occasion, to opt for the normal menu. I chose the moules marinieres starter the 10oz sirloin steak main, with black pepper sauce and my wife opted for the garlic mushroom starter the rack of lamb main. We both chose chunky chips with our main meal. In short, everything was fabulous! The food was hot arrived in an acceptable length of time. My wife adored her meal, stating she would definitely choose the lamb again, my steak was cooked to perfection. Only problem was that the chunky chips were so gorgeous that I wouldn't leave any so left no room in my stomach for a desert! So my wife had a sticky toffee pudding, I finished with a coffee. The bill when it came, at £65 total was less than I expected for such a quality meal, so I tipped more than I normally would. I'm not saying that we always pay £65 every time we eat out (which we do often) but this was a special occasion we didn't stint! We will certainly return here so next time we may try the special menu £15 for two courses. The point I'm making is that there is that choice there to tailor your bill to suit! And I'm sure the special menu will taste as good as the normal one! And I'm not forgetting the service. We were treated with grace attentiveness, and with hardly any time to wait between courses. So yes I am happy to give Portals Place a 5 star review most certainly we will be back!"

"Visited spotted cow for my birthday on Saturday 16 September. As my family reserved a table once we arrived the table was all set and ready for us. The girls and guys working there greeted us straight away and made us feel very welcome. The restaurant was lovely and quiet for a Saturday but that made it even more special as it felt cosy and secluded just for us as a family. The girls came straight away to serve us beverages. Once our food was ordered we all gathered for a lovely family photo which one of the girls took they couldn’t do enough for us So helpful and caring even describing the menu and taking time and patience with us whilst being fussy and asking lots of questions. If you’re in elwick and fancy a yummy pub meal definitely go here. They are amazing and we love visiting. Specially for the girls and guys working here they’re just absolutely lovely and it would not be the same without them. Thank you all for making my birthday special your a credit to the pub."

"A really nice restaurant, probably the best Italian food in hartlepool. Book early on busy nights as their tables fill up fast. All pizzas are made from scratch and you can taste the difference in the dough. All ingredients are fresh and taste amazing. Sauces are clearly made in house and have an authentic taste, with a light use of garlic and chilli's. Portion sizes for the mains is good, but is amazing for the starters, try the potato skins. Waiting staff are fantastic and always happy to help."

"This was our first time visiting this restaurant and we had tried multiple times to make a reservation without success until now. We were not disappointed! I chose the turkey with all the traditional accompaniments and the red cabbage was particularly delicious. "Sunday lunch, waitresses were kind and polite, service however was very slow with a very long wait for main course. When it arrived it was enormous with plate piled high with loads of veg, topped with Yorkshire pudding and all swimming in gravy. "A group of six, we went to Baan Thai for the first time and we will definitely be returning. On an evening you can park close by for free in a council car park or on the road near the restaurant if you are lucky. It has a lovely bright decor inside and we got a warm greeting from the staff on arrival. The service was faultless. I chose a mixed starter to share with a friend and Pad Kee Mao Egg Noodles. The food was fantastic. It was freshly cooked and on the starters, the described light batter was just that. The noodles were full of flavour with plenty of king prawns. Everybody else in the group was impressed by their dishes too. It was good to see the waitress read back the menu to check that she had taken the order down correctly which doesn't seem to happen very much these days. With a bottle of wine, 2 beers and one soft drink between us, it worked out at £21 per person. For the quality of food and service, it was well worth it and good value."

"I eat here every time I visit my grandson normally every 6 weeks tonight the food was great and service was going well till our main course waited a while for it all to come out wasn’t asked if we wanted dessert tried to get waiters attention to order coffee but they were to busy chatting. Gave up in the end and went to bar for bill. Girl who was dealing with this did give us £15 off a £130 bill and apologised. Think next time we here we try a new place ."

"First the good bit z we were able to get a table at short notice for lunch and my son enjoyed his fajitas. I ordered some tapas including meatballs and chilli con carne both of which were inedibly salty. Staff handle drinking glasses gripping at the rim rather than towards the bottom of the glass. Plates and bread were chucked onto the table rather than placed and at no point were we asked if we wanted additional drinks or if our food was ok. I hate shafting a local restaurant but honestly it was poor from the start."

"Carvery here was recommended by a family member. Today (Sunday we decided to deviate from where we usually go for our carvery and try Sambuca Windmill big mistake! Upon entry, we were quickly seated. Drinks orders taken and delivered very quickly. No The place was very busy lots of noise, kids and people rushing about, loud music adding to the noise. Carvery didn’t look great so we asked for a main menu, to be told after drinks were served that they don’t serve the main menu until after 4pm on a Sunday. We nearly walked out. We should have. Long queue for the carvery. Limited choice of veg. Dry meat (maybe why the waiter drowns your food in gravy at the end! and only a few slices. Your roast potatoes, mash, watery stuffing and very thick gravy are slopped on by a server who ignores the fact you tell him 3 times ‘no mashed potato’ then hoys it on top of your vegetables! Food tasted okay. Half way through the meal there was loud clapping. We looked around to see the carvery meat server stop serving to clap loudly for no apparent reason and this seemed to go on forever then the night club style music was turned up even louder causing a few customers near us to look at each other and shake our heads in shock/despair whatever you want to name it! It was not a calm and relaxing atmosphere to eat. We won’t be paying over £32 (11.95 each for carvery plus a pint of lager and Pepsi Max for this experience again."

"Terrible experience! We should have checked the reviews before coming here. This place is so bad that it should be reported to the local authorities. It's not even Italian - they didn't even have mozzarella for a tomato mozzarella salad starter. The bruschetta had a strange and unpleasant taste that was unlike anything I've ever had at an Italian restaurant before. The lasagne was just a red mush with no detectable meat - I've had better microwave lasagne. The salads were tiny and consisted of mostly cabbage with mayo and breadcrumbs - not a proper salad at all. My friend's Chicken Diane was tasteless with a thick, gloopy gravy and the same poor salad. We waited over half an hour for starters and even longer for our four main dishes, despite the fact that the restaurant was not busy. The staff seemed untrained and inattentive. Overall, a hopeless and disappointing experience - do not recommend dining here."

"I swear I've just been drinking in Basil's Fawlty towers ! We came out for drinks and had the worst experience ever ! A surly barmaid I believe called Britney was the rudest and most uninterested bar maid I have ever come across. Stood at the end of the bar and ignored us for ages. "We ate in here last night. It was early and clearly although the restaurant was empty, they were busy with takeaway trade. We had the Happy Hour menu and found the food to be attractively served and really very good. The waiters were smart and...friendly, making an effort to talk to us. We don't have hearty appetites these days and regretted not being able to finish our main courses. The waiter kindly allowed us to take the leftovers and packed it up nicely for us. It was just as nice today! Good luck to a very pleasant restaurant which turns out delicious food at very reasonable prices and has such pleasant staff."
