"Visited for a meal with family, my partner has been before for the creative menu offer but this is the first time visiting on a ‘regular’ night. Although it appears it’s not changed in many years the restaurant is clean and tidy, hosts are welcoming and the service is good, if a little slow at times. Food wise we all decided to go with the personal set menu. Hors d’Oeuvres, duck pancakes and 5 dishes from the main menu. The starters were decent, hot and fresh but aside from the ribs everything was a bit dry. Spring rolls, prawn toast, chicken and the seaweed were all dry with no sauces to go with them. Ribs were banging though and the crispy duck was also enjoyable. The mains were a bit hit and miss if I’m honest. The crispy chilli beef was neither crispy or chilli and bit bland really. The chicken curry was alright but nothing spectacular, as was the sweet and sour chicken. We had a chicken schezwan which was decent, nice bit of spice and the kung pao chicken was very enjoyable. None of it was wow though. Now if I’d had this meal for the £22 on the creative menu night then I think I’d have said it was reasonable value, not the best Chinese meal I’ve ever had but not too bad. The problem was, this meal cost over £200, nearly £45 a head which was a bit much for the quality of the food. A couple of beers aside it was all soft drinks. It’s known locally as a decent Chinese restaurant but I suspect this is manly for the all you can eat nights offering decent value rather than it being a high quality place to eat. By all means, if you want a decent fill of Chinese food try the all you can it ‘creative menu’ nights but I don’t think it’s worth a visit outside of these nights."

"Went for a drinks masterclass, the server Luke, was great. Made it really enjoyable. Nice little experience to do, I think he should get paid more as he was lovely. But we went to go get food as part of the experience afterwards was when the problem started. We weren 't on their system but were down on their paperwork for the 3-course meal; general staff was nice enough, and said their manager Claire would be out to sort this. We were waiting a while, but we didn 't see her come out to help us. The music was deafeningly loud (we were sat right next to a speaker), we asked someone if they could turn it down, and they said 'they 'd have to ask the manager, but they 'd probably say no. ' Didn 't have any change in sound, we had to leave as it was deafening. Stood outside for a bit longer in case Claire would come out but no. The general staff seems really nice, and they work within their means, but it seems like there is a serious managerial issue here. You can 't control the sound levels of where your staff are working in, theyre the ones who have to deal with it and so are the clients. No one wants to eat a 3 course meal with blaring music. We did email to complain as we were out of pocket for a 3 course meal (which was paid for on an experience voucher), and they already claimed that. We 've had to escalate to the voucher provider as we 've had no response. To summarize, drinks are good, and the floor and bartending staff are nice, but if you have a problem where the manager needs to intervene, good luck. Also, if you 're sensitive to sound, neurodivergent, etc., avoid it, as the absent manager seems to have the tight control of sound."

"Well as a group we all go out every month to different places and we heard papa j came highly recommended, well I recommend don’t bother, we got there we’re sat down straight away, we all had a vibe that this place was not what we heard, actually we all nearly walked out, reason it took half an hour to get the drinks, then eventually poppadoms 1 each, with the smallest Chutney dips Ever seen, Actually, we had to ask for another set of dips because they were so small that the three they bought out was just not gonna be enough for the six of us, Anyway, we eventually got to order our food. We all quite specific on what we wanted an hour later the start turns up I mean okay the starters were okay not too bad basically I had chips. I didn’t really know what to expect. They were spicy chips, (1) got this papa dish which was basically just to poppadoms with salad on and they all and all the poppadoms were soggy anyway from the salad, And the simplest starter came out last, which was just odd two poppadoms salad and even before that was eaten they started bringing out the main dishes, Well, what we ordered was definitely not what they bought out. I asked for my dish to be madras hot. I asked for chilli rice well those absolutely no spice to it whatsoever and they bought out those chilli And to bring out some more chilli rice well that wasn’t chilli rice either it was hot but not chilli hot. It was just hot hot. All the rest of the food what we ordered it all looked the same and it had no taste and no Spice absolutely awful, Service was atrocious as well. We all agreed that we weren’t gonna pay full price for this meal because it just wasn’t worth it so we asked for a discount and to be fair they gave us discount with kind of made up for the lack Luster attempts of what was sit down. So my overall rating of this pappa J Terrible Food terrible Service and I don’t recommend this. Before I left, I did tell the fellow beyond the bar, but this is by far the worst restaurant with we’ve ever ate in."
