"we spent one of the warmest and most pleasant Saturday afternoons in Greenwich and trying to find a decent ice cream parlour, but without avail. Finally, we figured out that the Italian American restaurant by the harbour might as well serve some cups with ice cream. Indeed, we were pleased that upstairs on the roof deck there was still plenty of space and the choices of ice cream looked appealing (in the menu). It took a while to attract the waitress who was very busy, but finally managed to place our order after 15 minutes. Another 15 minutes later, our ice cream (raspberry trifle and godfather) arrived. My ice cream cup should have been decorated with chocolate sauce and granulated nuts, but arrived very bland without a decoration. I sent it back to the kitchen and after this second attempt it still did not even vaguely resemble the cover photo of the menu, but at least all ingredients listed on the menu could be identified. Taste was okay but not overwhelming and my “godfather” cup was filled with soggy square brownie clumps and a great number of bullets (malt balls, also known as Maltesers). These really ruined the experience of the ice cream although the waitress assured me that these bullets are part of the original “godfather”. Technically, the Godfather movie indeed features hails of bullets, but I did not expect them to end up in my ice cream. We ordered the bill, which arrived after another 15 minutes, and as the waitress did not appear to come back with the credit card machine, went inside after further 10 minutes to pay. Inside I realised that these significant delays and poor service could be explained by the only two members of staff serving this whole floor (all the dirty dished were piling up on the bar inside). When we left the restaurant, we found however a number of staff idle on the ground floor. I think management has to improve the quality checks in the kitchen (just ensure that the appearances of their products has some likeness to the photographs on their menu) and they also need to give more support to their waiting staff. In any case, the quality of both ice creams was underwhelming and I don’t think we will come here again anytime soon."

"I have gone all over London from the cheapest places to the very top of fine dining and culinary experiences but nothing, I repeat, nothing can beat Alfies! One of the first halal kebab houses in London being open from the 1980s and till today dishing out the best kebabs, donners and cheese burgers in London! The brothers that run this place are second to none knowing every customer by their names and their families (as they have been about for so long). Always dishing out free items to people from a small gesture like a can of coke for a kid to sometimes giving whole meals free to regulars. This guys have actually understood how to run a succesful business. The queues here do not end till late night (1am-ish). I have yet to find a place that even comes close to their fried lamb donner in a pitta. The donner is juicy beyond imagination and is then fried on a grill with onions, peppers, chillis and their legendary chilli sauce. It is then put into a grilled pitta with whatever salad of your liking (salads include the whole bunch: cucumber, lettuce, carrot, gherkins, jalapenos, green chillis, mixed peppers, spanish onions, tomatos and so much more). All that for less than a fiver. You can eat alfies day in day out and not get sick of it as my family and pretty much all of Forest Gate has not since the last 30 years or so. Their tak-a-tak is an amazing creation. Chicken tikka on skewers first grilled on their barbecue style grill then put on their main grill which is then cut into small pieces and cooked with onions, chilli sauce, peppers, chillis and drizzled with lemon. This amazing dish is one of their most expensive item but is still a bargain for the taste and sheer joy it brings. You can eat it in a pitta or in a bun or in a naan (from their sister restaurant abu bakars across the road) or just plain with a fork! Their special cheeseburger is the bomb whilst their original fried chicken burger is enough to make me want to come everyday. I could literally go on all day about alfies and their qualities. A must try for all those wanting to try ultimate London street food."
