"We dropped in here early on a Friday evening after the cafes around the market square had closed for the day. We were after a simple cup of coffee, and they were able to quickly oblige, good value for money, with a cheaper rate if you have a 2nd cup, which was a nice touch. We had a scan of the menu, the food is a bit more expensive than other local rival pubs in town, and the dining room area is maybe a bit more formal, but there were a good range of main course offerings in the £15-20 range. This was a former coaching horse inn, a handy stopover heading north from York in the olden days, and this probably accounts for the rambling layout. It is a hotel with bedrooms available. A good bar with a range of well kept real ales, and the front seating area was starting to fill up with early evening diners ordering food and having a quiet drink before going into the dining area. The dessert options looked quite tempting, and there was a gentle hubbub of conversation, it had a welcoming atmosphere and the staff were polite, efficient, and smartly turned out. If we had more time, we would maybe have eaten here, but it was a handily placed stop for a cup of coffee before heading back home to West Yorkshire."

We stopped for Saturday lunch after shopping in the town. The warm cosy setting oozes old world charm. Service was prompt and helpful. The meals were well cooked and nicely presented. We've been before and we shall certainly return.

This restaurant is a hidden gem that must be shared! Although we want to keep The George a secret because it is so special, it is important to spread the word about how fantastic it is so that the chef can continue to craft incredible dishes for us to enjoy.

This is our fourth visit to the George. So pleased that someone recommended this hotel to us. Good food, clean and comfortable rooms and hospitable service makes it a winner for us. The icing on the cake I am reliably informed by himself is the well kept ale! Role on visit number 5 Speisekarte ansehen

Had a meal, which was spoilt by the cheese board, having frozen date and fig salami. What made it worse, was one of my friends queried this, and the young lad, behind the bar, said it's supposed to be frozen!!!! I gather, it was supposed to be spreadable. This young lad, then proceeded to kick the kitchen door, in front of all, to see. His attitude, was appalling.

Random choice for lunch, as we were cold and hungry. We were moved, by the staff, to a larger table, for our comfort! Excellent service. We ordered half size meals, couldn’t even finish them. Much impressed by lots of fresh vegetables, and a massive portion of fish. I think we will be back here again, very friendly staff, good service and great food at a reasonable price.

I met up with family members for lunch at this restaurant during the middle of the week. We had been once before and were very impressed with the food and service, so we knew we had to come back. Our second visit was just as delightful as the first. The homemade food was delicious, made with fresh and high-quality ingredients. The hot drinks were served at the perfect temperature and came with tasty biscuits. We received a warm welcome and great service. I think we will definitely have to come back for a third visit at some point because it's just too nice to resist! Speisekarte ansehen

Visited as a couple 7 March. We were staying in the hotel. Ambience was good. The eating area could perhaps do with a bit of updating but it is fine. Menu is a mix of pub classics and more adventurous dishes. I had one of the latter as a starter, Lamb Tagine Roll with harissa mayo and smoked aubergine purée. Very good. The roll had chunks of lamb and the mayo had a kick. Tasted and presented very well. I had steak and ale pie for main. Appeared home made with real chips. Again very good Mrs W had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. We had a very nice bottle of NZ Sav Blanc as well. Very good value.

We celebrated our anniversary at this charming pub with a great menu and daily specials board. The young man who waited on us was very friendly and helpful. We started with the Tomato and Basil soup, served with a warm bread roll and butter. For my main course, I chose the roast dinner with beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, and gravy. I wish there had been a small jug of extra gravy on the side. The vegetable medley included beans, cabbage, broccoli, sliced new potatoes, and small carrots, which my husband and I shared. He ordered the BBQ chicken dish with mashed potatoes and vegetables. We were too full for dessert, but my husband enjoyed a latte and I indulged in an Irish coffee, wh...

"We arrived here for a 2 night stay for a wedding (Fri sat night). PROS: Lynsey the manageress she 100% makes it so fabulous. Lovely, welcoming, looked after us brilliantly. Due to some staff shortages, she was doing what seemed like 10 jobs at once! We ate on one of the nights food was delicious! Great service tasty food. Breakfast was also spot on set us up brilliantly for the day ahead on the Saturday! The Willow room which we stayed in was fab ideal size, lovely cosy too! The whole 2 night stay was extremely reasonably priced the place itself has a great feel about it like a big cosy house! CONS: If you like total darkness, take an eye mask for sleeping as the rooms can get really bright from the early hours. Also, depending on the room, it’s on quite a busy road so can be quite nosy it would be worth having earplugs if you like a quiet surrounding. Due to staffing, the bar doesn’t stay open that late, so be mindful of this, they will however put drinks in your room if you can’t make it back in time for the bar closing. Taxis there are no local taxis, so arranging transport to the wedding we were attending was a nightmare which we didn’t account for! Luckily after 6 different phone calls, we managed to get sorted. The only gripe I had was the confusion over the bill if you decide to charge things to your room, the bills aren’t itemised so it’s difficult to keep track of what has been charged. There was some confusion on checkout over what we should shouldn’t have been charged for, so definitely choose to pay for any extras outright to avoid any confusion or uncertainty before check out. Other than that, it was one of the nicest, most personal stays we’ve had out in a long long time. This was mainly down to the Manageress Lynsey who is fabulous at her job really does make it feel like home makes you feel super welcomed relaxed. Thank you lynsey for really making a stay a one to remember."
