"We dropped in here early on a Friday evening after the cafes around the market square had closed for the day. We were after a simple cup of coffee, and they were able to quickly oblige, good value for money, with a cheaper rate if you have a 2nd cup, which was a nice touch. We had a scan of the menu, the food is a bit more expensive than other local rival pubs in town, and the dining room area is maybe a bit more formal, but there were a good range of main course offerings in the £15-20 range. This was a former coaching horse inn, a handy stopover heading north from York in the olden days, and this probably accounts for the rambling layout. It is a hotel with bedrooms available. A good bar with a range of well kept real ales, and the front seating area was starting to fill up with early evening diners ordering food and having a quiet drink before going into the dining area. The dessert options looked quite tempting, and there was a gentle hubbub of conversation, it had a welcoming atmosphere and the staff were polite, efficient, and smartly turned out. If we had more time, we would maybe have eaten here, but it was a handily placed stop for a cup of coffee before heading back home to West Yorkshire."
