"Rarely has a small business delivered so much in such a compact space – an incredibly well stocked farm shop with standout meat counter offering the full works including game, and gourmet food and wine goods covering most of the bases. Then there are the home made delights of the adjoining cafe which has become a regular breakfast haunt for us and where we have also enjoyed a tasty lunch. The scones and cakes seem to be very popular with other customers. It is rewarding for us to be able to do shopping such as organic skimmed milk and free range eggs alongside picking up a pheasant and some venison, rare cheeses, gourmet pates and specialist pickles. Our kind of provisioning experience. Lots of choices and surprises. The country kitchen atmosphere of the cafe is perfect and the service friendly. Good range of breakfast offerings and the specials board for lunch tempts the palate with thoughtful creations. The whole business model is an example of excellence to inspire others. Major congratulations from two deeply appreciative regulars."

Had the ham, Wensleydale and cranberry quiche today which was off the scale. One of the best quiches I’ve ever tasted!

Ordered sausage sarnie. A huge white bap arrived with the smallest twirl of a chipolata sausage. All bread, this together with a coffee came to £9.25! Total rip off.

There is lots going on at Roots, including a lovely cafe, excellent farm shop (including butchers), fresh fruit and vegetables shop and more. There is lots of parking and some good walking routes which start from the venue. Speisekarte ansehen

Lovely food. Attentive and friendly service. We called off on a sunday morning on our way to Northumberland. It was busy with cyclists and people catching up yet we had a table in 5 minutes. Breakfast was spot on and the fruit scones were fabulous. Will return

Fantastic find. We arrived as a coach party of 14 and Roots couldn’t be more accommodating. The food, drink and very personal hospitality was outstanding. Such a little gem that we came back the day after on our return journey and stopped off again for lunch and a great shop in the farm shop before heading home. Amazing Quiche, beef stew. Prawn and salmon subs and lovely cakes. Thanks for your hospitality. We’ll definitely stop off again when we are up.

"We arrived here for a 2 night stay for a wedding (Fri sat night). PROS: Lynsey the manageress she 100% makes it so fabulous. Lovely, welcoming, looked after us brilliantly. Due to some staff shortages, she was doing what seemed like 10 jobs at once! We ate on one of the nights food was delicious! Great service tasty food. Breakfast was also spot on set us up brilliantly for the day ahead on the Saturday! The Willow room which we stayed in was fab ideal size, lovely cosy too! The whole 2 night stay was extremely reasonably priced the place itself has a great feel about it like a big cosy house! CONS: If you like total darkness, take an eye mask for sleeping as the rooms can get really bright from the early hours. Also, depending on the room, it’s on quite a busy road so can be quite nosy it would be worth having earplugs if you like a quiet surrounding. Due to staffing, the bar doesn’t stay open that late, so be mindful of this, they will however put drinks in your room if you can’t make it back in time for the bar closing. Taxis there are no local taxis, so arranging transport to the wedding we were attending was a nightmare which we didn’t account for! Luckily after 6 different phone calls, we managed to get sorted. The only gripe I had was the confusion over the bill if you decide to charge things to your room, the bills aren’t itemised so it’s difficult to keep track of what has been charged. There was some confusion on checkout over what we should shouldn’t have been charged for, so definitely choose to pay for any extras outright to avoid any confusion or uncertainty before check out. Other than that, it was one of the nicest, most personal stays we’ve had out in a long long time. This was mainly down to the Manageress Lynsey who is fabulous at her job really does make it feel like home makes you feel super welcomed relaxed. Thank you lynsey for really making a stay a one to remember."
