"Went out with our friend for his 49th Birthday, had a lovely meal, service was excellent, food delicious and very reasonably priced. Me and hubby had lamb, which was very tender, Bangladeshi birthday boy was vegan and was not disappointed. Staff very friendly, a bit excessive with the hand shaking,but that's my English reserve !. The place was full on a Wednesday night, with mainly locals, so whatever they are doing, they are doing right. I would recommend booking to avoid disappointment! The doggy bag was just as tasty the morning after"

"The Heron, located by the River Great Ouse, is a charming pub and restaurant. It beautifully combines the character of an older establishment with tasteful renovations, creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. The menu features an array of enticing starters, main courses, and desserts, and from the pictures, it’s clear that the chef places a strong emphasis on presentation. Since we weren't in the mood for a full meal, my wife and I opted to skip the starters and went straight for the fish and chips. There were two portion sizes to choose from; my wife picked the smaller one, while I went for the larger portion. The service was warm and friendly, and both the presentation and portion sizes were spot on—good thing I enjoy fish! This is definitely a place we’ll return to for lunch or dinner in the future with the aim of trying more dishes from the menu."

"Bought (15th Jan 2024) Fish and Chips bottle of Coke, £13.50!! Got in my car and drove round to Morrisons car park to eat. This beats the worst F&C I have ever had, fish had a horrible twang which normally indicate old fish and the batter, very thin. chips were semi cold and dry. Ended up throwing away it's such poor quality. Then a few hours later the stomach cramps started and was nearly sick a few times and still today I'm feeling a bit nauseous!! This place in my opinion needs closing down, terrible."

"This pub was recommended to us by the owner of a shop in Downham Market so we took a chance that they could fit us in . Luckily they could .The food was really delicious. Starters of haddock goujons and cured beef were lovely. The cured beef just melted in your mouth and both of us shared it as the portion was very generous. Mains of Cajun salmon and pork belly were really lovely. The pork belly in particular was perfect. The meat melted in your mouth but the cracking was crisp, perfect!The service was good with staff happy to swap mash for chips on the pork dish. We would have loved desserts but both of us were so full we could only manage coffee.We have no hesitation in recommending The Hare Arms. You probably need to book at busy times though , it’s obviously popular , deservedly so."

"This is 2 stars only because the ale selection is good and the pints cost £2.50. I rarely pop in here tbh but occasionally I think I 'll just call in to see what beers they have on and get a cheap pint. I always regret it. This is not a pub, it is a large canteen where everyone has gone for cheap food. The absolute worse thing, much worse than the dirty plates and glasses left everywhere, is the bar service and the way that people for some bizarre reason queue at the bar like you would queue at the till in a shop. The bar is massive with plenty of space to stand at but an orderly queue is always formed behing one of the tills and I find it infuriating. This is not how a pub works. The awful queueing system is probably a symptom of the awful standard of bar service and inept bar staff here and is probably the only way the single member of bar staff is capable of know who is next to serve. You are never greeted with a smile and a hello like a normal pub but its just a who 's next or a shouted can I help anyone directed towards a line of people queueing away from the bar. The dirty glasses everywhere in this pub are even on the bar, there is no point in taking your empty glass to the bar on the way out as it will just sit there for ages with no attempt to clear it up, its as if someone on bar service feels it is beneath them to clear away empty glasses. There are much better pubs in Downham, The Crown which is a proper pub and a much nicer drinking experience and The Live and Let Live which is also a proper pub where you can watch the football and like the Crown the bar staff there know proper pub etiquette. Having said that you can get a late drink in this shameful canteen like wetherspoons when the other pubs have called last orders so swings and roundabouts."
