"It’s pretty easy to miss The Book Rest altogether if you don’t know it’s there. Situated on the first floor above a bookshop up a fairly narrow staircase, you’re greeted with a homely space divided into a sofa section near the windows at the front (perfect for people watching from above as you eat) and more traditional tables in the rear. Vegans and veggies are very well catered for here. A breakfast option now exists (sausage roll with extras) and the main menu now has more options than ever with sandwiches, hot mains, sides and of course, desserts! The staff are very knowledgable if you’re in doubt as the menu isn’t always 100% clear on what is sfv. Food quality is excellent I had a homemade lemon and coriander hummus and bread as a starter followed by vegan macaroni cheese with a side salad. Perhaps my only complaint is the portion sizes. They’re fine for most and very reasonably priced but if you’re really hungry or are used to bigger portions, you might want to order an extra side. Hot drinks are also available such as vegan hot chocolate with cream and grated chocolate."

just ok for vegan stop off, from the smell of speck cook hard in the air, and a bad choice of cake, packed and not so great to be fair, ok, if do not meet vegan friends, but would not recommend for a vegan only party

Lots of items marked vegan on the menu, including lunch specials, milkshakes and sundaes! All scones are vegan too. Some of the milkshake flavours and sundae toppings we're unavailable but we were here in the low season

I had a fabulous breakfast here. Homemade rosti’s, beans, toast, Linda Mc sausages, cherry tomatoes and mushrooms (I didn’t have mushrooms). It was so good! They have vegan spread for toast, and a choice of almond milk or soy milk for coffee etc. Speisekarte ansehen

vegan eating here is always available and is delicious and pleasant. there is a selection of settees or tables to relax, I would recommend the scones and coffee, vegan cheese, fruit, chocolate or flat, heated with vegan spread. lunches are varied, I have vegan macaroni cheese and salat, mushroom with fresh baked brot and salad, vegan chili and various soups all delicious. updated by previous review on 2018-06-07

"We were having a short break in Exmouth and were so impressed with the food on the first night that we booked for the next night as well. The restaurant from the outside looks small and cosy, but don’t be put off if the tables...look full as there as other room, equally as cosy, deeper in the premises The menu is interesting with a good selection of dishes and I found it difficult to choose a dish, simply because there were several that took my fancy. My wife had Chicken Souvlaki which, unlike a lot of chicken dishes was not dry and very tasty. My Lamb Kleftico was well cooked so that it fell off of the bone and was delicately spiced with a rich sauce. It was juicy and tender melted in the mouth. The second night my partner had carrot and cheese souflee served with a rich tomato sauce, Mediterranean vegetables boulangere potatoes. This I am told was lovely with a great flavour. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, so often these are overdone but these had just the right amount of crunch left in them. Myself I had Moroccan Lamb Tagine. Having eaten this in Marrakesh I was a little dubious but I need not have worried. It was not as rustic as that served in Morocco, much more refined, but just as tasty and cooked to perfection. For dessert we shared a Summer Berry Bread Butter Pudding with mixed berries. It had a good contrast on sweet and slightly sharp berries that complimented each other. The service was good, efficient, and friendly. Where there was a question , the owner was always happy to answer and obviously took a great pride, and rightly so of her restaurant. If you get a chance this is a must try restaurant and I have no trouble recommending it."

"My wife and I went here recently to celebrate her birthday. The waitress was fab and friendly and had a great sence of humour. Unfortunately that was where the fun ended. My wife ordered dover sole and I had the pork dish. Mine was extremely salty but I decided not to say anything, however my wife 's meal was inedible because everything was plastered in heaps of salt. We called the waitress over, who then asked the owner to come and speak to us. She was very curt and offered to recook the meal. We asked if whe would take bith away as we didn 't want to eat alone or leav mine to go cold whilst they recooked for my wife. She took both away but quickly returned to inform us that she had tasted both and thought that the fish was fine but maybe the pork was a bit too salty! I informed her that I was very sorry and that we did not agree and that bith my wife and I thought that the dover sole was extremely salty. At this point she started to raise her voice and attracted the attention of the rest of the diners. At this I decided that it was time for us to leave as the situation was irreconcilable and that we would oay for the wine but not the food and got up from the table and went into the bar area to pay. The owner followed me and as I went to hand her my credit card she raised her voice again and shouted I don 't need this or your money, just go! We would like to thank Kerry and her husband for ruining my wife 's borthday"
