"Not sure what’s going on here… Has the chef gone on holiday? Left for good? This place came highly recommended by the hosts of the Airbnb we stayed at locally, and the five star Tripadvisor reviews speak for themselves. We were really looking forward to it. When most of the menu is given in Italian your expectations are set a bit beyond home cooked pub grub. But that’s exactly what we got. The steak was overcooked. As was the duck breast. The veg was undercooked. The thin and watery sauces were served in milk jugs. The potatoes reheated in the microwave. And these dishes were expensive… Desserts were okay. The setting wouldn’t get me returning either- a noisy village boozer with little effort at creating an ambience. Not for me."

"Fantastic meal at Headlam Hall Hotel. Both my wife and I really enjoyed our meals. The Orangery dining room is a lovely backdrop for the food that was well presented, exceptionally tasty and, unlike many meals out these days, well portioned. The menu certainly lives up to the claim of Modern British cooking using locally sourced ingredients. My Tandoori lamb scotch egg starter was very flavoursome, a great combination... and even had a runny yolk! Both mains (belly pork/fillet of beef) tasted great, and the meats were succulent. My chocolate cheesecake was to die for, and Vanessa's Baked Parkin, salted caramel sauce, brandy snap and black treacle ice cream was a very clever and harmonious combination of flavours. Service was efficient and friendly but not over-obtrusive. All in all, it was one of the best meals we have had in a long time. Thank you."

"what a great tasty bite. from the moment we came to the moment we went, enjoyed every minute. sitting at the kitchen table and being able to speak with james and all its amazing chefs have just added the experience. everyone was relaxed, friendly and extremely knowledgeable and eating has made us look in texture, taste, servier suggestion and absolute love to blow away detail, but I think that is why they have 2 michelin stars! although all the portions are small after 15 curses they are full and I can not believe that some of the preparation starts 2 or 3 days before they arrive. the breakfast was also amazing. I don't know how to taste simple food as well. james them and their team are ultimate perfectionist, artist and master of eating."

"I stumbled upon this pub by chance and decided to check it out from the outside. The following week, we returned, but the bartender informed us they didn't start serving food until 6 PM. So, we took some time to look over the menu. I’m not a fan of seafood, but I ended up enjoying the beer-battered cauliflower. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant opened right on time!"

"Visited Easter Sunday for lunch with my wife and teenage boys. Arrived early and asked about our reservation. Table was not ready but were offered a table to have a drink and browse the menu while we waited for our table to be ready. Selection of food was good and reasonably priced against others in the area, we had carried put research before booking as some in our party can be fussy. Had heard about long waits for the food but after being shown to our table we were eating at, order taken and food arriving we waited less that 30 minutes. Food was lovely, we had two traditional beef and two roast chicken. Both roast chicken eaters were concerned it was going to arrive on the bone but that wasnt the case. We all almost cleared our plates with minimal fuss from the teenagers and ordered four different desserts, each one demolished. All the staff we encountered throughout our visit were polite, well turned out and friendly. Although 45 minutes from our home address we will be visiting again and have told friends of out positive all round experience."
