"So Gastro pub means public stomach I believe and mine is certainly more public after our visit today. We had been for a drink a couple of times breaking off a cycle along the nearby Alban Way. But today we decided to go for it despite the apparently high prices. Sometimes you get what you pay for, other times you get ripped off. The Plough is worth ever penny. We had starters and main from the Sunday lunch menu. There wasn't a single element that was cooked anything but less than perfection and the flavours were the best tasting (insert name of item here) you have ever had. The service was relaxed but, despite a full restaurant, prompt and always friendly. The wine list is surprisingly good value, if the standard mark up is 4x retail then I need to know where they get such good organic Montepulciano from at that price. The beers and cider choice is excellent and what comes out of the taps is in top condition. No complaints, total satisfaction and finishing the wine in the garden enjoying the remains of the day was heaven. As I took the glasses back the smell of liqueur coffee almost tempted me back in for more but it was closing time. Superb."

A remote pub but worth the ride. The staff were friendly and welcoming. Large garden with some larger tables

One of the best roasts I've ever had! The Sunday roasts were fantastic, and the atmosphere was lovely as well. All of the starters were excellent, and there was a great selection of drinks. Definitely worth the price!

Really nice country pub, food is really really good, particularly beef I’ve had twice. Service can be a bit slow and confusing where you order drinks from, either the bar or waiter. But overall do love it here. Well done.

Love this place! Great for a stop off when cycling on the Alban Way. Such a pretty garden! Always an interesting selection of craft beer on tap. Staff welcoming and friendly (not like the old days!!!! . Looking forward to trying out the new menu sometime soon!

Fantastic gastropub our favourite in the St Albans region. Creative menus with fresh ingredients, well executed and with a good selection of plates. Attentive staff and quick service. Beautiful traditional pub setting inside or a moderately sized rear garden overlooking Hertfordshire fields. Certainly worth a try!

Best roast in St Albans! This was our first visit since the new owners took over and wow it was fantastic! We both had the beef which was beautifully rare and there were generous portions of roast potatoes and a selection of veg. We shared the chocolate bar for pudding with the jaffa cake ice cream. Yum! We'll definitely be back soon!

This was the best Sunday roast I've ever experienced. The outdoor gardens are absolutely beautiful, and the cozy, historic interior adds to the charm. The staff are friendly, and they have an excellent selection of beers. However, what stands out the most is the incredible menu and food. I can't wait to return! Rob, the owner, is fantastic!

Really lovely experience for Sunday lunch, portions are decent size and well made, on the more expensive side for a pub lunch but quality is high. Was £200 bill for 4 adults for lunch, dessert and soft drinks each and tip included. No wine only 1 beer. Staff were lovely, pub itself is a decent size and there is a large outdoor seating space too. Parking can get busy.

We had an incredible experience at this restaurant! The ambiance was wonderful, the staff were attentive, and the food was outstanding. We kicked off our meal with mushroom arancini, which were delightful little bites of cheesy, sticky rice. My wife and I each ordered the roast, and both the beef and lamb were exceptional. For dessert, we enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding, which was absolutely divine! The only minor issue was that we arrived to find no parking spaces available, but it was Easter Sunday. We will definitely be returning!

"Yammin-Yummy says. ... 5 stars ... also a rarely awarded- 'beezybonus'. . . now, where do I begin to begin with such an amazingly appealing selection of freshly prepared foods that one would naturally expect that, already cooked, sitting, waiting for the next hungry expected customers. this can sometimes cook up to 10-20-50mins before they are placed in front of them. not here. freshly cooked. now this beautiful example of a traditional 'fish chip love affair, established over generations of Friday nights, was beautifully designed to tell their mouth, tonge taste panties, please attach their belts, and then it is about them an incredible arbor ride. ... one who seems to go up just as once they decided what's going in their mouth first (at least the crispy tail end) begins their incredible journey up; as their eyebrows increase during thinking, omg that 's sooo different good, light, crispy teig as I've never tasted in my 37 years since the beginning in the food industry. And then I made the mistake of dipping my squid in the homemade tartaric acid sauce. that is when the 1st massive fear happened, as I thought, oh my days; the better then mean, re-entry, deeper, actually cure my wrist action, to ensure maximum absorption of this sweet/creamy/tart/caper filled taste, as I reached for a chip to accompany, strengthen the excellent experience I thought stupid would be a 'standard thing'. Now I took care of you like this, but I have seen on my chips a few each mouthful was an experience, depending on how I stacked the fork, hahahaha. the fish was so fresh that I was looking on my teller sand. ... to dedicate a joy to each chip. ... the muddy heaps, normally warmed, not microshaft to a mass-hotter-then-the-sun, went a tasty bite, and quickly also, for once. the lemon shattered haddock had to be tied to the plate, because this teig was so light that it almost raised to the deck. but as soon as this handmade tasty tartaric acid sauce meets, any responsible 'handler-of-the-fork', wants to make sure that its only trajectory can be swallowed in their waiting swallow. It was so good, I couldn't stand to leave a single diesel and with this tartaric acid sauce, which even made a bulky chip, was nothing left, I was ashamed to ask the cook the recipe for 'this sauce', as he made such a light oil-free beautiful teig. the staff is very attentive, courteous, with a beautiful large sitting area also. get yourself here quickly bungalows to make an ordinary experience, in an excellent exciting eating expedition into a court that we all know so well, but so different. ... enjoy."
