"We called in to listen to a folk group and we’re sat by a local “character” and his bunch of cohorts. Very pleasant at first, but that soon descended into a drunken verbal free for all between themselves. So loud that the band stopped playing. Threats of physical assault to each other made us very nervous and we moved. After a few minutes, it calmed down until the most verbal decided to start again, more local drunks of both sexes sparred verbally until given a Luke warn “warning” by the barmaid. This had no effect and off we went on round three. Appalling language from them all. The lead drunk pointed my wife out as the cause of the argument, and the barmaid issued her with a warning rather than lose the custom of her regulars. I didn’t hear that until my wife told me later on our way home, or I would have had words with the barmaid. They were still throwing insults when we left after two pints. A good night soured by a Gang of drunks who should have been refused service hours earlier. The beer was good, and the food s apparently excellent, but we could only comment on the former as we felt unsafe staying any longer."

Great pub serving food and a wide selection of spirits, very comfortable for families as well. this is a good stop for pub grub.

This is a pretty spot on pub, the staff are friendly and the place has a good atmosphere. Drinks a little overpriced though but would come back.

We was made to feel very welcome in here. There were plenty of gins to choose from and this pub also had a pool table which my son enjoyed playing

this is a pub used by locals and is just your average pub but as it is next door to the cottage we stay in we usually call in for a drink while we are there

Very nice pub , very clean and tidy , in a great location and has a small area outside the front to sit , the staff were friendly and the beer was very good .

Really needs a revamp , old pub , music so loud it was distracting even though only 3 couples including us was in the bar. Faint small of wee.. decided to only have a short and picked baileys which had a lump of brown in it.. I assumed it was baileys .. gunk . Picked it out We drunk up and left .. I really like traditional pub .. but this one needs a bit of attention. Staff seemed pleasant. Could be great .

we were misled by the tourism website which said this pub serves food, which it doesnt, but the welcome is lovely and the landlady has a plentiful supply of dog bowls and treats. when we asked about food we were obviously told no but also that we could bring a takeaway in but nit chips due to the smell, but was recommended the hot pork sandwich shop round the corner, the best pork sandwiches ever, unfortunately cant remember its name to do a review but go and find it!!

My wife and I were having a lovely time in Whitby but entering the Star the landlady was very unfriendly on ordering our drinks, we gave our seats up to an elderly three and got a stool for the gentleman which the landlady promptly swapped for a smaller one so he was much lower than the rest of his group, but it was the right colour!the landlady stated, remember don’t move the seats to sit near your friends as it will be moved back, very controlling landlady and landlord, not surprised the other staff looked very unhappy and disinterested, horrible atmosphere just look at the signs on the toilet doors!
