"Had a brilliant overnight stay at Potto, great customer service from checking in to checking out. We arrived earlier than planned and the restaurant was really busy but the guy who checked us in found us a table non the less. We enjoyed a gin a beer and bottle of wine with some food. We had a table booked later on for dinner so just shared a selection of starters tapas style. Our room (5) was beautifully decorated and immaculate, as was the ensuite. Excellent value at under £50 as it was a Sunday night. After a rest shower wandered down for a couple of drinks before dinner. Great choice of beers, gins cocktails. Our evening meal was just as good, both had parmos and shared a couple of desserts, cookie dough brownie, yummy! Washed down with a bottle of wine and finished with Irish coffees. Hubby even took a shot of malt whiskey up to the room as a nightcap. Next morning we had breakfast, have to mention what a great menu choice and all really well cooked. Checked out and had a little 3 mile wander around the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside surrounding thd pub and called back in for coffees before we headed off home, at that point the young lady serving us said the coffees were on the house. What a fantastic gesture, much appreciated and excellent example of customer service. What an amazing hospitality team at Potto from the front of house, bar waiting staff obviously the chefs kitchen staff judging by the standard of food and not to forget the cleaning team as all areas were immaculate and very well presented. A credit to the business. Thank you! Can't wait to return."

"We arrived here for a 2 night stay for a wedding (Fri sat night). PROS: Lynsey the manageress she 100% makes it so fabulous. Lovely, welcoming, looked after us brilliantly. Due to some staff shortages, she was doing what seemed like 10 jobs at once! We ate on one of the nights food was delicious! Great service tasty food. Breakfast was also spot on set us up brilliantly for the day ahead on the Saturday! The Willow room which we stayed in was fab ideal size, lovely cosy too! The whole 2 night stay was extremely reasonably priced the place itself has a great feel about it like a big cosy house! CONS: If you like total darkness, take an eye mask for sleeping as the rooms can get really bright from the early hours. Also, depending on the room, it’s on quite a busy road so can be quite nosy it would be worth having earplugs if you like a quiet surrounding. Due to staffing, the bar doesn’t stay open that late, so be mindful of this, they will however put drinks in your room if you can’t make it back in time for the bar closing. Taxis there are no local taxis, so arranging transport to the wedding we were attending was a nightmare which we didn’t account for! Luckily after 6 different phone calls, we managed to get sorted. The only gripe I had was the confusion over the bill if you decide to charge things to your room, the bills aren’t itemised so it’s difficult to keep track of what has been charged. There was some confusion on checkout over what we should shouldn’t have been charged for, so definitely choose to pay for any extras outright to avoid any confusion or uncertainty before check out. Other than that, it was one of the nicest, most personal stays we’ve had out in a long long time. This was mainly down to the Manageress Lynsey who is fabulous at her job really does make it feel like home makes you feel super welcomed relaxed. Thank you lynsey for really making a stay a one to remember."

"We called here during a staycation in West Tanfield. The Staff were all lovely, very friendly and helpful. The setting was great too, with a local feel to it and good music in the background. There's quite a few choices on the menu but it's quite expensive for bar meals. Some of us had quiche one night and although it tasted ok it was a tiny slice of quiche for just under £14. Served with what tasted like oven chips, and salad garnish and coleslaw which were nice. I had a cheese and chutney sandwich another night and it was very nice , but again expensive at just under £9. Desserts were very nice and I enjoyed a chocolate brownie with ice cream. Drinks were very nice too, with some locally produced brews. I saw someone eating fish and chips and it did look like a substantial portion and looked good. Steak pie is served in a bowl with inches of gravy surrounding it. Served with a very small side dish with a tiny portion of vegetables and a few chips. Portion sizes seem to vary depending on what you order. A bowl of chips was a substantial portion. The bar has a lovely atmosphere and Staff are very nice. We didn't visit the beer garden because the weather wasn't good. I would definitely return for drinks but maybe not food. West Tanfield itself has a good nature reserve and at this time of year there's masses of blackberry bushes. Not too far away is the lovely little village of Bedale. A fantastic hidden gem with the best high street I've ever seen. Loads of independent shops selling at reasonable prices and lots of great coffee shops, cafes and restaurants."
