"Upon our arrival, we noticed several staff members gathered behind and around the reception desk. However, as soon as we entered, they all promptly moved into the kitchen, leaving us unattended at the desk while they continued chatting. As for the food, there was not enough gravy and it was quite dry. The dish lacked vegetables and had an excess amount of potato, with roasties that were too large and slightly undercooked in the middle. On a positive note, the dessert, specifically the sticky toffee pudding, was superb. Unfortunately, there were numerous flies present in the dining room and bar area. The staff appeared to be lacking in customer service skills, as most of the service was devoid of eye contact or any pleasantries. We ordered a bottle of still and a bottle of sparkling water, but were only provided with a jug of tap water without any explanation (we later discovered that bottled still water was not available). Good customer service can either make or break a business, and it seems that the Fauconberg's staff could benefit from some improvement in this area."

"Thought we would give the local Dough Deli a try, as had good reviews on social media. We ordered two Pizzas for collection that evening, total cost £17.20 which I felt reasonable. We collected at the allotted time and brought them home. We had a Meat Feast and a Sausage and Sweet Chilli toppings. Both tasted delicious, my only negative comment is that both should have been cooked a little longer. Both bases were, we felt undercooked, very doughy and chewy would have benefited from a little longer in the over to crisp and colour them up. Would we order again most certainly and probably just ask if the bases could be given a little longer in the oven."

"Went on Monday 10th April, greeted with just a hello no smiles as there was a notice on window saying food served daily we thought we would have a bit of dinner on asking who we thought was the proprietor if we could order food he abruptly said we don’t serve food on a Monday. So we decide to go somewhere else and told the proprietor that we would return tomorrow for dinner. We returned the evening after and as usual just greeted with a hello we sat done the waitress came over to ask if we where staying to dine answering her with a yes she then took our drinks order and brought us menus. We browsed through the menus and decide what we would like to eat. The waitress then came to take our order and when telling her what we would like she THEN advised that half of the food on the menu they they hadn’t got. When I personally ask for chicken salad with sweetcorn she scurried away to ask the chef if he could do a chicken salad with sweetcorn she then returned and said NO he can’t do that. So we decided we would go elsewhere. We will NOT be returning there again. the waitress should have informed us as we entered the dog and gun that half the menu was unavailable before taking our drinks order. It seemed to us that they were only interested in locals and not guests. So therefore that is why we have give a one star terrible WE WILL NOT BE RETURNING ANY TIME SOON !!"

"We parked our campervan for the night and arrived late at the restaurant. Even though they had stopped serving food, the staff kindly prepared some delicious burgers and chips for us. The homemade burgers were fantastic and really showcased the quality ingredients they use. The staff and locals were friendly and hospitable. The parking fee for staying overnight was only £10, and they often have live music events. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant in the future. Despite being located next to a railway station and near a road, the noise was not a major issue for us and the location suited our needs perfectly."

"This pub came highly recommended and it didn’t disappoint. Visited in January with my family and we all enjoyed the delicious home made burgers served with home made chips, onion rings and coleslaw. The best we’ve had in any pub and we’ve visited a lot over the years! We loved it so much we visited again in March for Mother’s Day. We were told that the burgers were not on the menu that day due to it being a special set menu. Feeling very disappointed, I asked the owner, Vick if we could request the burgers as we had been looking forward to sampling them again. She agreed and went above and beyond to cook them for us again. They tasted just as good as the first time! All the staff are friendly and courteous and nothing is too much trouble. Thank you for accommodating us and we’ll definitely be back soon!"

"We went tonight for a birthday meal and we won’t be returning. The staff are fine but not the most pleasant or enthusiastic. We ordered potato skins and the flowering onion for starter the onion was bland and the potato skins were inedible, they were tough, hard and we couldn’t even chew them. The homemade bbq sauce is the strangest thing, the onions in it are undercooked and it tastes nothing like bbq. But that’s by the by. The gentleman did come and apologise about the potato skins and said it was a problem with the potato season. But I’ve literally just seen a review from January that had the same problem as us, so who knows. My parents then had the pan fried cod and chips, one had the regular one had the large and there was a £4 difference in the two. There was literally no difference at all in the portion of fish or accompaniments. They did say that the cod was lovely however. My husband has the parmo and it was fine, but the chips were nothing flash. Not proper chunky pub chips anyway. I ordered steak pie and the filling was awful. It was grey and watery in colour and it was so tasteless. Everyone else tried it to make sure I wasn’t over reacting but it was shocking. I didn’t eat it and again they removed it (and the skins) from the bill, but by then all I had eaten was a bread bun and some mediocre chips. We weren’t asked if we wanted anymore drinks, my Dad asked for a pint and they said yeah and walked off but didn’t give the rest of us chance to ask for a drink. They then got the drinks order wrong. We asked for lemon and lime and they brought pints rather than asking what we wanted mind you at £4 for a lemon and lime there’s no wonder! As a family of 4 we had one flowering onion, two cod, one parmo, 2 pints, 4 soft drinks and a J20 and it was £80, because they knocked off the skins and pie which was an additional £20. We were really disappointed and would definitely not recommend."

"This was our first visit since it has expanded and we were quite impressed with how it looked. The cafe was lovely and warm as the log burner was lit, a little too warm actually for a couple of us who had worn jumpers on such a cold wet day. The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. The food was very good especially the full cooked breakfast, good quality bacon, sausage and it was piping hot. It was busy so very noisy, think it needs something to soften the echo. Overall we enjoyed it and would go back however we were very shocked to be charged £3.80 for one takeaway cheese scone from the counter and it didn’t even come with butter. I am more than happy to pay for homemade cakes and I know how expensive they are to make but I do think this price was outrageous so it had better be exceptional when we eat it later."

"I had read the reviews and noted they were mixed including that staff were alleged to have fallen short. That was not our experience so forget that and don't be swayed by it. We booked last minute for a meal with friends yesterday 29/12 and can only say we went with an open mind and were not disappointed. Great Ayton itself is a pretty Yorkshire village and the pub faces the green so the view is great, with the green framing historic houses surrounding it. So that is worth a visit in its' own right. We had a window table in this cosy welcoming place which was perfect and the parmesan chicken was delicious. A friend had a butternut wellington which was innovative and also well received. Service for both food and drinks was timely and cannot be faulted. Staff were absolutely lovely. We were not rushed in any way. As no one in our party had previously eaten at this place, despite living fairly locally, we all agreed that we would definitely return and could make it a favourite place to eat."

"I had a fantastic dining experience with excellent food and service. For dinner, the cost per person was between £20 and £30. I would rate the food a solid 5 out of 5, as well as the service and atmosphere. I highly recommend trying the Mughal Chicken, Naan, Poppadoms, and Chicken Tikka. As for vegetarian options, I’m not certain what’s available."

"I organised an afternoon tea for a birthday gift and it was amazing the best afternoon tea I have every had. Instead of boring finger sandwiches, we had a toasted sandwich, pastry and a quiche, followed by savoury and sweet scones with homemade jam, followed by homemade cakes. I think we had a little more of the sandwiches/pastries than usual due to one of us being vegetarian but even sharing them would have been plenty. It was incredible well worth the money. The staff were polite and friendly and even dealt with some rude and entitled customers that expected people who were already seated to move for them very well! This is a great little spot and is dog friendly which is even better for us. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be returning."

"We have been to The Bay Horse many times over the years. Generally its was always good, not high end but fine for what it was. We have been more than sympathetic over the last months given the issues the hospitality industry have suffered...due to the pandemic and the effects of it but...A bad piece of meat, badly cooked then presented without any resting left me with the worst Rump Steak I have ever had. The accompanying sauce was less than average as were the other dishes delivered. The waiting staff were fairly attentive and, as should be expected polite, but if a pub rests on the laurels of its food The Bay Horse needs to buck up."

"We called in for fish chips around 4pm on Friday 15th December. The restaurant was very quiet because of the time of day, the waitress came for our order very promptly. We ordered the pensioners’ specials within minutes our fish, chips, mushy peas, brown white bread our hot drinks were brought to our table. I really appreciated my request for coffee instead of tea, it was milky coffee too, absolutely perfect. The restaurant the toilets were immaculate. No wonder it’s such a popular restaurant I can see why Peter Wright of Yorkshire Vet enjoys his meals there so much. We will definitely be back again, probably in the spring or summer because we live about 90 minutes drive or so away from Thirsk. Well done White Horse Cafe, we got a friendly goodbye thank you from a member of staff downstairs too, so lovely."

"We had a delicious lunch here today. I had the steak and ale pie and Steve had the Sunday roast beef dinner. We both enjoyed a Sunday lunch out more than we have in years. The food itself was just great, well cooked and hot, but what was so unusual and what made the main course for us was something that doesn't happen, anywhere now, all the plates and serving dishes were hot, not barely aired, HOT. Just as they should be. A huge thank you. The beef in the pie was extremely tender and tasted delicious as did the pie crust. Steve's roast beef arrived pink/rare-med just as requested, the mashed potato was better than, but just like, homemade, with lovely cauliflower cheese, cabbage and leek, carrot and broccoli. Very friendly, experienced staff and a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, what a find! I'm sure we'll return having recently moved to the area. P.S. apologies for the poor pic. Just snapped a quick one before we are the lot!"

"I only had a coffee, as did my husmand who joined me, but I bought a wide selection of books and calendars for my granddaughter, friends and for me! some I haven`t seen reviewed but others were only released this week, the Richard Osman, Raynor Winn and the Ann Cleeves. The staff were friendly and although the coffee was in a paper cup due to Covid, I could sit for as long as i wanted, excellent, although I kept on spending as a result!The upstairs toilets were spotless.I look forward to bringing my granddaughter here in the future."

"Do I wish we had a pub like this in our village!!! Open on a Monday. TICK. Warm welcome. TICK. Roaring fire. TICK. Great menu. TICK. Good food. TICK. Top beers TICK. Superb location TICK. You get the picture. This is a super, traditional Yorkshire pub with rooms. As four walkers, we could not have asked for better sandwiches. The Pigs in Blankets Baguette was inspirational brilliance and tasted divine only beaten by the bestest of chunky chips. We were treated like royalty and will return for dinner and a possible overnight stay even though we live just 20 miles away. Top place. Well done and Thanks!"

"I went to this restaurant yesterday to get some takeaway fish and chips. The staff were friendly, but the battered items like fish, onion rings, and pineapple rings were very greasy. None of us were able to finish our meals. The staff was very helpful and friendly, making it a good option for families with kids. The service for takeout was efficient. The atmosphere was decent. Overall, the food quality was average, service was good, and the atmosphere was pleasant. The price per person is reasonable, ranging from £1-10."

"Just had a small Cod Chips and it was spot on! Nice sized fish, lovely white meat and batter not greasy. Fat chips (normally I prefer thin) we’re very tasty and again not greasy but reasonably crispy. Feeling nice and full and pleased i didn’t get the large fish as often they’re just too big! I’ve tried Bradley’s and White Horse and these were the best by far. And a better price too at just £6.20. Can highly recommend! Service: 5"

"We Arrived and were promptly seated. Upon arriving at the table the menus were dirty, I had stains which appeared to be blood or meat juices or possibly a sauce. Order was initially taken quite promptly. We ordered two seats of parmo croquettes to share. Upon the starters finishing, steak knives were placed on the table, albeit the wrong way around. Despite using forks for the starter these were not replaced so had no forks for main course. We ordered two chaturbiand, 1 fillet and one flat iron. The flat iron was bland, no taste no flavour. The chatubriand is small and again very little taste. The fillet was a good size and ok in taste but again lacked flavour. The sides were great, the brisket was well liked, however the creme peas were hard and the sauce fairly watery. After finishing dinner no one came to clear the table, I tried really hard to get attention, despite the staff all stood at the bar talking. The table behind us waiter approx 10-15 mins to have drink orders taken. The restaurant wasn’t busy. Because of the wait 2 of our party Left, everyone wanted to leave but I wanted dessert. Haven’t been to tomahawk previously I knew the sticky toffee pudding (best course of the night) was divine. I asked the server for the sticky toffee pudding and the bill. The total bill was just over £350.00 for 6 people. The food in my opinion for the quality is way overpriced and was underwhelmed by the service. This was supposed to be a special treat for a birthday and an expensive one at that for mediocre service and food."

"Thought we had found a decent curry in the area and have been here several times to eat in and take aways over the last 18 months. Ordered a take away last night (21.10.23) and they said card machine not working so we had to get cash which was a pain. The ordered two curries a Parthia and a Tikka Masala. Both were very disappointing- the Pathia was not at all spiced and hot and was very bland with no kick and the chicken was over cooked and grisly in places. The Tikka was weak and watery with no real flavour. Don’t know if they have changed cooks or what but would not go again I’m afraid so back to looking around again in Thirsk area as ones in town also poor."
