"We came to Restaurant Nigl for a traditional Austrian, alfresco lunch in lovely surroundings. The restaurant location with the views of the vineyards and old Roman Ruins above could not have been a better backdrop to the classic, executed to perfection, Austria dishes from son,...Bertram's kitchen. The Barlauch soup was the hit of the day followed closely by the Tafelspitz with Barlauch spinach and a couple fish dishes. The white wine was served cold crisp. Our server, Fabian, could have been more attentive, friendly helpful. So what happens after a lovely two hour lunch? You hike up to the ruins. It was shortly after our party reached the top that I discover the truth about Nigl. The business card simply says, NIGL SHARING IS CARING What does that mean? When your husband falls and breaks his leg, one of the Nigl sons is part of the Austrian Red Cross rescue team, the woman who conducts wine tasting is relaying messages from rescue team to me below, that our sever, Fabian offers to drive me to the hospital, cleans a room for me to spend the night (even when restaurant is closed the next day), then finds me a place close to hospital to stay whilst husband is there. You understand, over and upon, but it simply was their way, their norm. Nigl is a place where their passion for food, wine and hospitality shine but none brighter or stronger than the emotional embrace they provided me, my husband and our friends on this wonderful, horrible day."
