"We were eager to visit Coasters after their apparent multi-million pound facelift and checked out the evening al a carte menu on their website. It all looked very tempting if a little pricey but went ahead with the booking. On arrival they were unable to find our booking, despite it having been confirmed, but managed to squeeze us into an almost deserted dining room...... The waitress who attended to us was witless. God only knows what the trainee who scurried along behind her made of it all. We watched as she wandered aimlessly from one table to another followed by her bemused cohort, trying to find the correct one to offload the meals she was carrying. To cap it all, she knew nothing about the various drinks and had to 'go and find out ' more than once. Disappointingly, the photocopied menus bore no resemblance to what we had seen on the website. A rather bland selection of 'dumbed-down ' meals but still with the same high price tag. Clearly the original chef had some foreboding and quite wisely scarpered only to be substituted by somebody significantly less accomplished. The meals in themselves were even more disappointing than the Xeroxed versions but hunger overcame the tasteless and poorly presented offerings. Thank goodness the Shipyard ale made it somewhat palatable. We were amused to find a large chunk of cork, at least the size of a placemat coming away from the underside of our table. By this time the antics of the hapless staff had become the highpoint of our evening. Needless to say the table near us were equally unimpressed to find out the staff knew nothing of their 'pre-ordered meals ', nor of Simon who took them....... There was one saving grace, our occasional waiter Johnathon. He dealt with the dilapidated table part amusingly and seemed to have an inkling of how things should run, unlike the manager who was not in evidence. All in all a very disappointing hour wasting £70 which would have been better spent on a couple of take-aways. They 've made s pretty good effort to upscale the place, but quite clearly the chef, manager and staff, with the exception of the evening 's saviour, need to be replaced. Will we return? Not on your Nelly."

Great food and lovely atmosphere. The lunch specials are good and the food always comes well presented.

We had a lovely meal here today. I had the chicken and my husband had the beef roast dinner. Both meals were excellent and good value. We will definitely be returning soon

Visited with family on a Monday evening , very quiet and staff welcoming but food very poor, two of the meals uneducable and whilst removed from the bill a very poor experience. Speisekarte ansehen

Imagine having a roasted 1 cauliflower, 2 little stem broccoli, 2 petite potatoes with 10 gr of spinach sauce and pay £14.25 in an average looking restaurant... it didn't work for me..

We arrived here early Monday evening . It was miserable and windy outside , but as soon as we stepped inside the restaurant it was warm, welcoming, and cosy. I opted for the hock terine, then the salmon , delicious, cheerful service . Value for money , Thank You for a lovely evening . m

I stopped by for lunch and was very disappointed. It seems like the chef may have left because the taste, portion size, and overall quality have changed completely since my last visit a few weeks ago. It's unfortunate because I had plans to have a family celebration there in the new year, but now I will have to rethink that decision. I feel really disappointed. Speisekarte ansehen

We booked for 4 for Sunday Lunch. Restuarant was quiet so we had great service. Menus choice was good and very reasonable. We have four prawn starters which were nicely presented (one needed a bit more sauce) Two roast beef two chicken dishes for mains. Very good indeed, good portions, with nice selection of fresh veg. Rice pud and an apple crumble for two f us . Really enjoyed it.

We enjoyed a pleasant and leisurely lunch at this restaurant. None of us had starters, but for our main course, we ordered two portions of venison sausage with mashed potato and gravy, and two haddock dishes with mushy peas, chips, and tartar sauce. The meals were absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection. We decided to order an extra portion of vegetables to share, as the sausages did not come with any. We also had a reasonably priced bottle of wine. Although we skipped dessert, the coffee and shortbread biscuits were especially tasty. The relaxed atmosphere allowed us to chat and enjoy our time without feeling rushed. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant.

"We visited our old favourite Hartley’s again this evening for only the second time in 2023. We always have a lovely time here but we are guilty sometimes of forgetting just how good the food is! To put it into context we have become “foodies” over the last few years having been spoiled by annual trips to France and a few Michelin Star experiences in the UK. Tonight we went back to the fabulous friendly and laid back experience that epitomises our favourite local restaurant, Hartley’s. From the minute we walked in, it was the usual friendly welcome and banter and wow was the food “on point”. Mrs D had the bruschetta freeing me to have the Squid and both were fabulous. Let’s be honest I don’t really like salad, but the one they do with the squid I could happily just eat on its own and with the pickle it so complements the subtle taste of the squid. For mains I had the sublimely balanced gammon with cream sauce, poached egg potatoes and cabbage. How well each element complements one another, The better half enjoyed the Seabass, which from my shared forkful was equally lovely. I had the delicate rhubarb and ginger crumble for pud while the missus had STP. All washed down with a lovely Chilean Merlot! What a fabulous evening! I said to JD “sometimes we do forget just how good this place is” 5 stars tonight only because I couldn’t give 6!"
