"This was a return visit, much looked forward to, to celebrate a family special birthday. Booked several weeks in advance, specifically requesting a table in the bar dining room for 1pm, Sunday lunch and would order the roasts 2 days before. Knew something was wrong...when they rang asking us to confirm table was booked for 1.45 and they said we had booked duck. Said no that is not us, but it was clear from their confusion that they had not made a note of our booking, but said ‘no problem, we would have a table. I would add here that a deposit had been paid at the time of booking. So we arrived on time as booked, and instead of being seated where we had booked, our party of six were shoved into a tiny corner in the main very crowded bar clearly not a dining table more a wide plank of wood. None of the other tables in this bar were used for eating. The bar was crowded with drinkers standing up, (no social distancing whatsoever) and when we sat down were literally squashed together, our seated backs were being jostled and shoved by drinkers, our heads knocked and and drinks spilt onto us. The noise of shouting behind us was deafening. The table was not suitable at all to eat at it was only large enough for drink glasses. When the food arrived, the veg and meat dishes and wine bottle had to be placed on the windowsill. We had no veg until we asked if there should be some and the girl said she didn’t know but would check. When the veg arrived the meat was nearly cold. We asked for more gravy hoping to disguise the cold meat, but that never appeared. We asked to be moved to a proper table but were told that they were all taken, no doubt due to our original booking having been lost. The food was very poor two tiny joints of meat between six the pork was cold and the beef was cold and raw in the centre. They had clearly been sitting in the kitchen for a very long time. Those tiny ‘joints’ cost £150!, a total rip off disgrace from a quality butcher, they would not have cost more than £20 total. We had not been asked how we wanted the beef cooked. When the bill came, we found that the prices of the roasts were significantly more than menu on website and on checking were told that it costs money to change the website! The woman at the bar rudely grabbed the bill and said I’ll change it, and then slammed it down on the bar top. To make matters even worse, on arrival home, found that the deposit paid had not been taken off the bill, although this was rectified. We will never return to this place despite it always having been our favourite and cannot recommend it whatsoever."

disappointing: oysters came with two dips; a soot vinaigrette, which almost all vinegar; and a tabasco sauce, which is to tabasco. carved/solded meat on top rather unusual (not really a success.)

Great service and another memorable and generous Sunday lunch. Thanks. Beef served very rare (as described) veg and accompaniments were great. Seasonal pud a must even though I was hard to make room! Would have liked to have left a tip, no cash and apparently...not possible with Apple Pay. Will be back

5 adult 2 young enkelinnen had the most fabulous frying (lammy) in the restaurant. it was super boiled with a good selection of vegetables. the lamb was so big that the rest was wrapped in foil to take us. desserts were. also very good. the pub itself is a precious stone that is worth looking for outside and the lookout from the huge garden are wonderful. a first visit, but not the last!

Just come back from a amazing lunch .Food was well cooked, beautifully presented A menu that you could take your friend or a business partner as it did highend market food but also Pub classics ,which gave Avery good varied menu, portion size was good...Service was very attentive without being over the top and the ladies that served us were informative and delightful .Will definitely return and recommend Thank you

Should have been 4 of us today but 2 had Covid so we enjoyed a beef roast for 4 just the 2 of us. Never mind we got the big doggy bag to take home. We took our puppy and sat in the marquis with...heaters. Very nice well spaced tables and effective heaters. Superb roast delivered on time with all the trimmings. The best roast potatoes I’ve had in years!!! Just the perfect country pub with stunning views and lovely friendly helpful staff. Yes it is expensive but wow is it worth it. Highly recommended.

I cannot conceive of a more appealing aspect, setting, ambiance, menu, wine-list, proprietorship or patronage than that of the Duke of Cumberland. Under the stewardship of Award Winning Chef, Simon Goodman, the pub perfectly marries fine dining sensibility with true character and genuine charm. It’s...regulars are among the finest of any drinking establishment on the planet and over multiple meals I have never failed to be astonished at the level of food and service. Emphatically this is the finest pub in England and therefore the world.

Absolutely wonderful!! We could not fault our lunch. The setting is amazing , I haven’t been there for years. Beautiful old building in an idyllic setting . Loads of outside seating to enjoy the views. We ate in the restaurant which is light a spacious....The bar looked cosy. The menu, for me, it was difficult to choose, so many delicious meals. After much deliberation… I have the mac and cheese bits followed by the pork belly, which I loved. The squid had some nice twists. The ham egg and chips looked fantastic. Staff great. Best pub grub we have had in ages .

I have made a similar review about this pub before I do not return for 5 years - the cook is clearly talented (trust oil etc. with exception - there are so many better aromen with means of life - this is just a fad) but this venue is a matter. Lost the whole experience could be so much better! the service and the entire ambiente, while qaint, unfortunately lacks in many areas. young untrained /unsupervised coworkers can be cheap but the result is not good.
