"I’m in two minds about reviewing Le Bareil. I loved the meal I had there and would hate to see it becoming so popular, I couldn’t get in next time I happen to be passing through Aquitaine, which may be not be for many years. But Le Bareil is not the kind of restaurant you could go for a quick snack unaccompanied, it is a place to linger in a group with old friends or family, so I really ought to share my experience...The first thing to understand about Le Bareil is that fancy it ain’t. The second, is that you should set aside a day to eat there as you’ll need to be seated at the latest by 12.30 and are unlikely to leave before 4pm, by which time you’ll feel in need of a bed to sleep off the excess.Le Bareil is an old-school, unreconstructed, lunch-only, restaurant set in a French farmhouse and farmyard, which serves simple, local, rough and ready fare. Tables must be booked in advance; there are two, fairly similar, daily changing, set menus at around the 25 Euro mark, inclusive of aperitifs and suitably young bottomless red wine. On the day we visited our lunch consisted of six courses proceeded by a fruity aperitif. We started with a cabbage soup, which was followed by a rough country pate; a rich goose gizzard salad; duck in a cream sauce with dauphinoise potatoes; an excellent cheeseboard and a selection of desserts. The food was robust, home-style, country-cooking – strong flavours in over-sized portions. The setting and friendly, laid back atmosphere made us feel as though we were the guests of old friends, rather than paying customers - we didn't leave until late afternoon. We felt as though no-one would have minded if we stayed until nightfall. If you’re in the Dordogne, set aside a day to go Le Bareil and another one to recover from the experience. Just don’t tell anyone about it or I won’t be able to get in next time I am there."

Lovely lunch overall based on duck, duck, duck and cheese. Perfect local red wine and a lovely dessert made it complete. Starter (soup with vermecelli) was a mistake.

Just as before, gracious and patient. Our late arrival after church didn't phase them at all. The menu included the drinks and coffee. Little choice, just well cooked local food and a chance to chat with friends. We reserved 3 months ago

Having lived in France and visited every year for 50 years this is that kind of restaurant that takes us back to our earliest lazy lunches in a then numerous excellent family run auberge, sadly so rare today. All round 10 out of 10, we just loved everything about it.

This is a fabulous auberges embracing the very meaning of auberge. Locally sorted produce, cooked by mum, served by the son. Attended by locals as well as lucky tourists. Reservation needed. There is even a shop attached to buy all of the owners "fare". From duck confit to her beautiful sweet courgette preserve....yummy. Always the best atmosphere here.

Have been going to this family run restaurant for years and it has never disappointed. Starting with a hearty soup followed by pâté, each course is delicious and filling. My only word of caution would be to pace yourself as there are 6 courses to enjoy. As a family, we love the food so much that my brother and I treated my dad to a meal here for his 60th birthday, coming all the way from the Kent for the weekend! And now you can buy some of their ingredients from the shop next door, which is ideal once you've tried their pâté!

Recommended this Restaurant by a friend who lives nearby. We ate on the patio and whilst not stunning views a great ambience. Locals and local workmen were amongst clientele as well as a few touristsTwo set menus were offered a five course lunch or a seven course lunch (we opted for the seven) and enjoyed all the dishes (Salade de gésiers was not everyone's favourite but we all ate it)The house wine included in the price was very drinkable and replenished when emptyAll in all a very pleasant way to spend three hours on a sunny afternoon Speisekarte ansehen

Bookings are essential-as the restaurant is full daily, the locals are well aware of the quality of cuisine provided and the cost of12Euros. The 6 courses change daily, we were given homemade soup, pate, coq au vin, plat du fromage, dessert and coffee. Before we sat down there was alreadya bottle of red wine, water jug, bread and mustard on the table, which are included in the menu. I was amazed and delighted with the homemade courgette & melon confiture served with the fromage! This is what a restaurant should be friendly, with prompt service and fresh meals . After that meal there was only need for a light snack for dinner!

We went to Le Bareil on the advice of friends. In mid-October, they were only open at mid-day, so we booked our table for lunch. Our meal consisted of five courses: an amazing and hearty soup, house made foie gras with house made conserves, duck confit with potatoes, a full and outstanding cheese course and finally, housemade gateau de noix with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. All of this, with a respectable if anonymous red wine included for 26 Euro/person. The food was spectacular. One of our group had allergies to garlic and other alliums - we notified the restaurant when we made the reservation and they accommodated nicely.
