Howan - Speisekarte

Visited as usual chippy up the road had a long que. But clearly a long que is a good sign! Anyway got impatient and visited this place.. A mistake. Rude staff and greesy chips and tasteless Cod. Ditched after a few mouths full.

Shouldn’t have returned here, we’ll certainly learn our lesson this time. Very poor fish and chips. Tasteless cod (with several bones), soggy batter that mainly stuck to the paper, and undercooked chips. Quantity over quality. Definitely won’t be returning.

Absolutely swimming in grease . and when unwrapped the batter just fell off . . Noticed the last few visits that the chips were a bit on the limp and greasy side but tonights food went straight to the wheelie bin.. not returning and used this place for years . Speisekarte ansehen

Ordered beef and bean sprouts and chicken chow mein and both dishes were so over salted that nobody could eat either dish. It genuinely tasted like the salt had been spilt in cooking pot as it was so overbearing. Contacted the restaurant but no reply. A complete waste of money.

I have used this place as my go to fish and chips and Asian (usually Thai) takeway for 5 years. The quality has always been great on both sides good fresh crunchy ingredients with decent spice on the Thai side, and they are very quick usually 10 15 mins, if they are overloaded they say so but generally aside from lockdown I can phone, hop in the car, and its ready by the time I can get there. Parking is usually OK too, unlike central Newbury...

We used to really enjoy our meals from Howan but recently the quality of the food has definitely gone right down . After today we will not be going back again . Tonight our Chinese food was edible , but it was tasteless , dry and basic . The chips were disgusting. They had obviously been made a very long time before , they were hard , dry and cold . They were so bad we could not eat them . Such a shame as Howan used to be so good but not any more …, Speisekarte ansehen

Personally I have found Ho Wan to be the best Chinese take away in Newbury. Food generally really good BUT disappointingly they never seem to be able to get the S&S chicken balls right. For some reason they appear to use reformed chicken, almost like spam, which never seems to taste like its cooked properly with a mushy texture. Such a shame that this staple Chinese choice is so bad. Sadly have to go elsewhere if I ever want chicken balls. Can however recommend their S&S chicken Hong Kong style.

We have been ordering food from Howan for many years The food is usually very enjoyable, occasionally they get the order wrong but not very often . Tonight 29 Dec 23 We ordered our meal by phone for collection . .Unfortunately once we got home we realised the order was slightly wrong . I called them to tell them straight away to tell them they had over charged me . They refused to accept they had got it wrong and they also refused to correct the error next time . Needless to say after their unhelpful there won’t be a next time ….

Not many reviews recently and I went here last week for the first time in years and in my humble opinion it’s very good. It’s a Chinese Fish Chips so that’s the way it should be measured. The people serving were very friendly, it was really busy (10 people waiting on a Thursday evening) which says something and also means they are constantly frying and most things are “fresh”. We had a combination of Chinese and f c and nothing was greasy as some other people said. Only 4 stars as I’ve had better chips (these were good but not amazing) and I think it’s expensive but I would go back. Speisekarte ansehen
