"When my car broke down on the A66 this weekend in the dark, with the RAC hours away! The Troutbeck Inn turned a bad experience into a good one. They could not have been friendlier or more helpful, rallied the support of the local community to help get my car off the main road, made a room available, and generally could not have been more supportive. Sometimes the kindness of strangers can make a real difference, and this was one of those times. Thanks again. Hope to visit again in less challenging circumstances! "Firstly the food was really lovely and tasty. The black pudding and the Brie starters were delicious. The steak pie was amazing and they were happy to give extra gravy we requested. The crime brûlée and sticky toffee pudding was also delicious. However have given it only 3 stars due to the service. We were seated quickly and drink order and food order taken quickly. We waited about 15 minutes for the starters which was fine, but the main meals did not arrive until 2045 which was over an hour after we finished the starters. We did mention the food was lovely but the wait for service was too long to be told very defensively “well, we are very busy and the chef cooks everything from scratch”. There were only four tables including us there and no table had more than 6 people, so not that busy. Have been to other pubs where everything is cooked from scratch and did not wait like this. It is a shame because the food was good and all they need to do is improve the service to get 5 stars."

"Stayed overnight at the H and F in their dog friendly accommodation 'The Salutation Inn ' across the road from the pub hotel. Dog friendly room was spacious with bowls and bed area for the dog and large double bed with large plasma tv for our comfort. Tea and coffee facilities including biscuits. Room was very clean and neatly furnished. Dinner and breakfast across the road at the Horse and farrier pub had facility to include your dog on non carpeted dining area and staff were welcoming and professional. Food was excellent nd service very efficient . Would definitley recommend this to others- perfect for walkers, close to Keswick and you can take your dog."

"What a great pub experience (we visited in Nov. 2023). This was the 2nd time visiting and eating at this pub. It is perfectly located for climbing Blencathra otherwise it can be considered a bit in the middle of nowhere. However, it is certainly worth a trip to as the food is gorgeous (being vegan, I'm referring to the vegan options here, but everyone looked very happy with their meals) and ales really good and change over time. The staff are super friendly, polite very efficient. We were in a camper van for the weekend and wanted to hike Blencathra for sunrise, so the pub was ideally placed for this. And, brilliantly, if you eat drink in the pub, you can use their car park to overnight for free. I would suggest booking a table in advance as it gets very busy; our table was next to a real fire, which was great with minus temperatures outside. The pub is very dog friendly, so feel free to take your 4 legged friends in the pub. The pub also offers accommodation (called the bunkhouse), which appears to get booked up, so again book in advance. Overall, with excellent food, friendly staff, a really lovely atmosphere and good beer, we had a brilliant experience here and would highly recommend it. It also makes a great place to head for if you are after a Sunday roast as this is offered every Sunday. Vegetarian options: Vegan options are available and gorgeous. Parking: It is not a big car park, you may have to park on the road. But if you eat/drink here you can stay overnight for free, which is great if you have a van."
