"There 's nothing like a traditional English country pub inviting you in for a warm welcome and this fits the bill as nothing like a traditional English country pub inviting you in for a warm welcome. So obviously a very popular pub by word of mouth but after the odd experience we encountered we were left wondering if 1st timers come back for a 2nd time. Ok so the staff are all very young and well presented but on entering the establishment, out of the 5 members of staff around and behind the bar we were greeted by 0% of the team. It took a prompt and a rather loud 'hello ' from one of our party of 5- so hardly invisible. Following a 6 mile thirst and hunger and the sight of the pub made us eager to taste the ale and sample the food. It was table service so after waiting 15 minutes without sight of any waitress approaching us-the reason why will shortly be explained,we returned to bar for a top up. I asked if we could order food at the bar as we 'd had no joy at our table. Indeed we could order at the table but not knowing a table number I explained where we were sitting, then all came to light. We had committed the cardinal sin of sitting in the 'non- locals ' exclusion zone where food was not permitted, reserved exclusively for 'locals ' who fancy a pint without having to mix with outsiders. This area was approximately 10 steps Futher through the hallowed arch past the riff raff section. But behold, after explaining that I only wanted chips, I 'd ticked the food allowance box as snacks were allowed. Dare I push my luck and ask for the cheese board too?. I plucked up the courage, took the plunge and ordered the cheese board, only to be knocked back with a refusal as cheese board didn 't fit the criteria of snacks. The look of sadness must have resonated as the kindly barman went above and beyond and put a request in for me to a colleague. A few umms and ahhhs later I was granted permission to be served cheese on sacred ground but this was obviously a one off and I 'd pushed my luck to the limit. This so nearly went very wrong when my friend asked for a bowl of roast potatoes. I think by now, they knew the strict laws of snack categories had been smashed into smithereens and with our fingers crossed, our order was granted. Confusion reigned with young waitress 's daring to walk the further 10 paces , through the arch almost as if an electronic tag would be activated and the 4 minute warning siren blast into action. Chips are chips, cheese board is just obviously a cheese board minus any cheese cos it took a double take to spot it. 4 miniscule portions of cheese with loads of multi coloured biscuits. I think this was around the £10 mark which was very disappointing when the cheese was barely visible- were the 4 grapes on the side a desert? We asked for sauces and apart from being offered mint sauce and mayonnaise, no others could be thought of as they don 't serve cheese with chutney or pickle, so we swerved the mint sauce and had the cheese bare and naked. On the bill, a 10% service charge was included but I 'm rather baffled as to what service there was. The food came out in dribs and drabs, the 1st lot being finished by 1 party member before the next delivery, a desert came out before the chips and I had to ask, then get myself some cutlery. Lovely setting and the staff were polite but the bill was far more than I 'd pay elsewhere. Think il just stay in my local town pub, may ask to introduce a secluded area for outsiders . Is the service charge being saved up to buy a new radiator in the gents?. The garden picture shows the exclusive through the arch area that we dared to invade ."
