"My disabled wife and I, oh yes and our cat, having been driving our motorhome for a few hours just happened across the lovely looking place, with a large flat car park. We pulled in on spec for a drink and as us motorhomers do, ask about staying overnight. We fully understand and respect either a yes or no. I opened the do of our van, for some unknown reason our cat decided she would jump out first, something she has never done before, and without hesitation headed straight into the bramble bushes next to where we had parked. This cat as any animal lover can understand is our soul mate. Straight away we tried to call, offer treats etc, but not a sound or sight. Anyway I wandered over to the bar area leaving my wife by the vehicle calling the cat. Firstly I bought two drinks, then asked the chap behind the bar about staying overnight. No came straight back, it's an insurance thing. Fair enough, oh but our cat has just gone missing so we may be here a while. Back to the van with the drinks, by now my tearful wife was getting more distressed. So I, we wandered back and forth, around this field area calling, shaking treats, still nothing. One or two walkers were very helpful in taking our number incase they saw her, suggested reporting it to the local vet as she is chipped, which we did. My wife's mantra had become we're not going anywhere without her. Good hour later, I went back into the bar to buy another drink. Different person said if it was up to them, we could stay, obviously them knowing the cat was still missing. Back to the van. So I began walking further afield, leaving my wife at the van. I was gone a good hour when my wife phoned to say the cat had returned. Overjoyed. Back to the van. Now here's the reason for the review. Whilst I'd been away, a person presumably the landlord had spoken to my wife and threatened that as we had been in the car park for more than 3 hours the pubs open all day) he would be calling the police and get us clamped unless we moved within the next half hour. My wife was in tears. I will say fortunately for him the cat returned, because otherwise he could have started ww3 so far as I'm concerned, but we we would have stayed put. Thank you The Sun ,Lydiard for your understanding and compassion. Whether or not this review puts any of your prospective new customers off, I don't care. WE WON'T BE BACK"

Lucky to have this right on our doorstep. Friendly pub with the most amazing food and drinks! Pub quiz, meat raffle, cocktails, live music and the nicest staff in the south west.

Had a meal here a few weeks ago excellent ! Lovely traditional pub, good service. However, disappointed with our visit last Saturday (2/9/23), steak was tough to cut even with a steak knife , chips were pale, stale and dry and burger was hard and overcooked. Such a shame as it was a family birthday and spoilt the evening somewhat.

We visiting this evening to enjoy the sunshine with our two young children. Lovely family pub with great space and games for the kids. They even made friends with some other children at the pub and didn’t want to leave! Food was delicious, hot and good value for money. Kids meals were huge and also very tasty. Great service from the staff to, looking forward to trying the roast next!

Just been here for a birthday lunch and was very impressed indeed. A well kept up together village pub and very clean inside and out. There was 6 of us and the food was amazing. We all had something different and they all came out together. Very generous portions indeed and would not hesitate to return for more lovely home cooked grub. Added bonus is its dog friendly so on return will be taking our dog. 10/10 for me

We came here expecting to order a Sunday roast. However the pie on the pub menu looked so good that I changed to that. It was exceptionally good! Home made, short crust, totally enclosing tasty steak. Best pub pie I have had in years. My friend had the vegetarian Sunday roast option which was also exceptionally good with great roast potatoes and plenty of veg and extra gravy. I wish I had left room for their puddings!!

Don’t normally go out for lunch over Easter weekend (due to it being so busy) but decided at last minute to have lunch at our local. Despite being very busy we were offered a table and after a lovely couple of drinks at he bar (ales well kept and a great selection of gins). The Roast Lamb, so easy to get wrong on pub menus, was very tender and tasty and the Chicken was just as good. Lucky to have such a great village pub but it’s real asset are the team running the place. My wife and I have both worked in hospitality so we don’t take it for granted, but we happily enjoy it when it is so good

My wife tried to order Chicken Supreme only to be told "out of stock '. so quickly ordered Scampi £13.50 . I ordered a Ploughman 's £14.00. When the meals arrived the Scampi came with skinny chips (we do not like them, prefer fat chips and a bowl of peas .My ploughman 's was ok except it came on a long piece of narrow wood (hard to cut up and eat with out spilling ham, sausage roll and 3 cheeses, pickles and bread (which was toasted ??? no butter .I think a small salad would have been better with Scampi other than peas .These were only are preferences ,you may like the food as it is . The young ladies who served us were great ,nice and friendly.

Nice local pub but disappointed with our Sunday Roast. We ordered roast beef and roast pork. The pork was thinly sliced and only 2 slices. I’m afraid it looked and tasted a little like a Birds-Eye ready meal although the vegetables were nice, but just a couple of carrots and some cabbage. Sadly there was no crackling and the stuffing was a small perfectly formed anaemic looking ball. Aunt Bessie would be proud to know that her Yorkshire puddings were being served in this pub. They looked nothing like the ones in the pictures. The roast potatoes were perfectly round and pale leading us to suspect that they were prepackaged possibly frozen? The service was good and friendly but the presentatio...

You will notice from my other reviews that I tend to go for the fish and chips when having lunch out. This is because I like my fish and chips and it is something I cannot prepare at home because I don't have a deep fryer. So, here we go, The Sun served this dish for £4.50 LESS than the one that disappointed me recently but it was absolutely top notch grub. The fish was delicious, it was obviously absolutely as fresh as possible, the batter was thin and crispy and not oily at all. The chips were nicely thick cut, properly made on the premises I would think, beautifully crisp and perfect. Garden peas are OK in their place but I just don't like them with fried dishes so I asked for baked beans...

"The best thing about our experience was the telephone booking for a special lunch. Lovely, friendly, helpful person who noted that it was my wife’s 50th and would pass this on so the staff could ensure that this would be a great and memorable occasion.Lovely day, the sun shining, and the setting glorious – but the moment we entered, things were not as anticipated – a “matter of fact” greeting, perhaps acceptable in an ordinary 3 star hotel, but little warmth – a vague, “who are you?” from the maître d’ on entering the restaurant, as if we were intruding on their comfortably empty dining room and they would be called to work – and a rather “take it or leave it” from the waitress, though we did get an embarrassed smile on one occasion – the only smile we received all lunchtime. The menu was rather unexciting – I ought to have looked on line first Very little range, though lunches probably don’t have a resident chef at that time of day, so that might limit the available options: baguette, beetroot tartare with rice, burger, black bean burger, fish and chips tarted up with “Iford cider”, tagliatelle, a gnocchi, sirloin steak, and a “superfood salad” with choice between chicken breast, smoked salmon, and tofu. We opted for the latter, one chicken, two salmon, and added 3 extra sides (great idea with us choosing pork belly, polenta chips and gougère. Having taken our order we were told, “sorry, there’s no gougère,” so we chose the “crispy calamari” instead. For drinks we chose the local Kettlesmith beer, which I enjoy anyway, and an alcohol free Pink Negroni. The latter arrived and was so alcoholic it could well have made our driver fail a breath test on the spot – maybe that was why we were billed £11.50 for the replacement, an unadorned, ungarnished glass, mainly of ice cubes that rapidly melted into a warm alcohol-free wishy-washy liquid I suppose we should not have expected too much of an alcohol free cocktail, normally of gin and vermouth .. but what was quite unacceptable was that the thin strip of orange peel that had enhanced the original, probably quite lovely cocktail, was absent and no one had bothered to replace it, not even with a sprig of mint!Well, maybe the food might make up for it? No such luck. The attractive, large ceramic bowls were generously filled with a range of leaves, but the kale, hard and chewy as kale at the end of a hard winter, (or a mature chard) failed in a desperate attempt to masquerade as tender. The chicken dumped atop was bland, with any taste poached out of it, and the salmon was just ordinary farm-bred, cheap supermarket salmon. I loved the pork belly – could have had a full plate of that! – but the polenta chips were pretty mushy under a tasteless crumbly, far from crispy cover, and the replaced calamari a disaster – far from “Crispy”, they drooped into a bowl, batter hanging off, and the cooking oil that welled at the bowl apex typified the lacklustre attention of the kitchen, examples of whom waddled in and out with shoulder-burdened posture and bored, inattentive facial expressions that seemed to typify the rest of the on duty staff on what should have been a happy celebrative half-a-century birthday – an occasion that not one member of staff had even bothered to acknowledge! The setting is a typical local Jacobean building with Victorian additions and a lovely green countryside overview. The garden has a few choice plants, shrubs and trees but could have been cared for more attentively. The view from the restaurant needed more care and a bit of back-bending weeding. The restaurant was tired and disappointing, but the architecture holding up the ceiling glass was imaginative and the lighting, if needed, would have been exciting. Perhaps the brown-edged, ailing leaves on the table and wall plant decorations were typical of this establishment’s attitude to making what should have been a joyful occasion into one that made us never, ever want to grace it with our presence again."
