"We had a fantastic few days staying at The Gorge in a log cabin over New Year. We enjoyed using the hot tub and dining at the onsite cafe for breakfast and meals, making our days out exploring the surrounding countryside easy and enjoyable. The local pub, The Crown in Lofthouse, was a great spot for celebrating New Year's Eve with delicious food. The staff at How Stean took excellent care of us. Thank you for a wonderful stay."

"We had a truly delightful meal on Saturday evening, 19th October. After a warm greeting and a cool glass of champagne, we selected the five course tasting menus. As a non meat eater, my version was a perfectly balanced selection of fish, shellfish, vegetables and cheese. The St James cheese with its accompaniments was my ‘star’ dish. The venison was my husband’s ‘star’. However good the food it is so often the service that makes a meal exceptional and John, Gillian and Richard ensured that all staff matched our ‘digestive pace’. Bravo Frances and your great team. Thank you."

"I had to laugh reading the last negative review. I was having drinks with my nieces when the hen party arrived, who were in fact in my opinion very drunk and abusive. I do not post often on TA but having spent my time working in hospitality for many years I don’t blame the owners for turning them away. I had a feeling they might post a bad review hence me posting my own experience. I had a great meet and greet on arrival by the two ladies behind the bar and we were made to feel most welcome. The food was excellent. It takes a while for the food to come and the waitress did say explain that but everything is homemade and cooked fresh, no frozen veg here! The veggie lasagne was a hit with my nieces and I had their fish lemon sole and caper special. You do have to book to reserve a table as they don’t have many tables and it gets busy with diners."

"Most will think before 5 stars are awarded to a venue of any kind. Well talking to a stranger who had driven one hour to eat at this wonderful Sportsmans arms made the recommendation sound to be the place to eat if you really want to enjoy superbe service, food and setting. Menu can be seen online and prices for staying in this old but tastefully decorated and garden layout. It's just one of those places one will never forget. We went back the next day for lunch it was that good the night before. Not the lowest in price but not the most expensive either, and the food quality is as the saying goes. You get what you pay for."
