"I recently ordered food from Indian Ocean take away in Exmouth.The food arrived on time and was on the surface ok and tasted reasonable . Unfortunately I decided to check the food standard rating after which I was mortified to see was only 2!!! This is extremely low and very worrying. The rating was from a check in October 23 so current!! The low rating refers to cleanliness, pest control etc and I really wish I'd checked before ordering as it's true to say I wouldn't have. I never will again!! I'm just sorry I've eaten the food without knowing environment it was made in. Always check food standards rating so you know what you're eating and the environment it from. Not surprising the standards rating is not displayed on the window as is usual."

"had the most amazing evening with friends. this place is a hidden gem!!! we all had a wonderful time and have learned so much about the Gin production process and how ingredients are locally sown. so much wonderful local products to buy and personal are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. I could not recommend enough not only for gin school, but also top quality local food and drink when not enjoying for yourself, but as gifts. they make great Christmas hams and many quirky small eats and drinks gift. sometimes for everyone. a great experience and will definitiw for gin school and return to shop only."

"I convinced my partner, who is half Italian, to join me for a meal and drinks at this restaurant. He wasn't very hungry, so I decided to order the Nachos with melted cheese for £4.50, with additional toppings costing 75p each. I chose sour cream and jalapeños. My partner ordered an iced mint frappe for £4.50 from the menu, while I opted for a simple black tea and asked for lemon to put in it, but they didn't have any. I had to wait a long time because there was only one girl serving a large order of ice cream. Eventually, a young man came to take my order, though he seemed new and unsure about the prices and menu. He wrote down my order and an older man came out to help. The nachos were served unceremoniously, with no napkins, and the dish consisted of mostly broken nachos with a sprinkle of cheddar cheese, not the gooey mozzarella I expected. The sour cream came from a squirt bottle and tasted bland, as did the cheese. Despite their poor quality, I ate them because I hate wasting food. My partner also thought there wasn't much in the bowl, but we enjoyed the few jalapeños that were there. My partner's frappe came in a plastic cup, and the server apologized for not knowing we were sitting down and offered a spoon for the whipped cream. The visit was redeemed by the pleasant young server. We asked the young man for napkins, and he pointed us to a table inside where we had to get them ourselves. The worst part was seeing the older man and the young man go out three times to throw shop waste into the public bin on the square, including coffee granules and kitchen waste that spilled all over the pavement. The young man said he didn't know why they didn't use their own bins and was just following instructions. We were shocked and upset by this behavior."

"I was pleasantly surprised that they were open on a wet Sunday morning in January in a seaside town. I'm so glad they were. My wife had a Bakewell slice, my son had a very chocolatey chocolate brownie with chocolate pieces on top, and I had a toasted teacake, which was more like two slices of a loaf made with the same ingredients. All three were full of flavour and delicious. My coffee was very tasty too, with no bitter aftertaste. The service was excellent, the staff were very welcoming and friendly, and we had only a very short wait before our order arrived. We will be back again. I thoroughly recommend it."

"Nice looking small café type of place and was told that they can accommodate a gluten free diet as I suffer from coeliac disease and must avoid all types of gluten. I ordered a ham sandwich with gf bread and when it arrived it looked...good and had crisps on the plate. I asked what brand of crisps they used and was told they were Walkers, I told her that they were not gluten free. The women who prepared the food came out and told me they were gf, which as a long term sufferer of coeliac disease I found rather insulting. I told her that I could not eat the food due to fact it would make me ill , but she went on to say that it says no gluten' on the packet,(which it does not) but then changed her mind. GF crisps are available but if you searched Walkers you will see that they are not gf. Also when I mentioned cross contamination the woman who prepared the food said that it can happen as they only have a small kitchen. I paid for the drinks we had but not the food as we left it untouched. The young girl serving and cleaning the tables was excellent and understanding and could teach the older staff some manners."

"Visited for brunch after Exmouth parkrun. We booked a table and were given a lovely spot in the window. Chai Latte was one of the best ever and the breakfast so well presented and absolutely delicious. We were pleased we booked as busy when we arrived and the whole time we were there. Friendly, attentive staff and the scones and cakes looked so inviting. We need to return for sweet treats. Thank you."

"Absolutely diabolical! 1hr wait for a table (as apparently they were full) then 1hr 20 wait on food for food that was poorly reheated. The chef needs to learn where the salt is kept. Pork was tough, roast potatoes had been reheated and fried, veg was overboiled, Yorkshire pudding was stale and over reheated. There was 5 tables total during our service and 12 tables total for the day not sure how his service and food would warrant a 1hr 20 minute wait. Not one check on the table, whilst waiting and during the meal, had to ask for the ETA, was told 5 minutes and it was a further 25 minutes. Only put 1 star because you can’t put 0. Will not be coming back, will not be recommending."

"Ended up here after not being able to eat at our first choice due to it being fully booked (they had a cheap Wednesday deal). However, I think luck was on our side as we had a terrific meal. Lots of veg options which is great as my partner is vegetarian. The table service was quick and attentive and there was a good selection of specials, good for me as I like to try new things. All the food was well prepared, not oily or salty (our 2 main bug bares with Indian food) and all the dishes were full of fresh vegetables, even the veg rice. We will certainly eat here again. Looking at the low star reviews for this restaurant, most are from 4-5 years ago when it was in previous ownership and don’t reflect our experience."

"Ordered a takeaway for 2 people, after going on the website to look at the menu to find there wasn’t one, “ coming soon”, ok, not a problem as ordered a few times from here and knew exactly what we wanted. Ordered 2 starters, 2 rice a curry and ribs plus couple soups, was amazed at the price! Couldn’t believe it, but was too gobsmacked to query it…I know, my fault entirely……but to be charged more than £12 for the same items from a few weeks ago??? Was the meal worth it? Definitely not, ribs overcooked, curry was mainly onions bit of meat, bit spicy, ….the spicy bit was ok, didn’t enjoy it one little bit. Sorry, but you’ve lost a customer, definitely won’t be back for takeaway or eat in."

"After a lovely walk along the beach we thought we would stop for a nice hot drink and as this cafe had lovely views we thought it would be a nice end to the walk. Due to covid restrictions there was a bungy rope across...the entrance from the road with a sign saying please wait to be seated, so we waited and waited, a girl. Inside obviously saw us but just turned round and went back to the counter. A lady inside waved us in, again we stood by the sign at the door saying wait to be seated, a young lady came and said what do you want great greeting, we told her just a drink, she said go through and I will come and attend to you. Well I think she forgot us so we ordered at the counter. The drinks came, hot chocolates that were very badly presented, sloped in the saucer and chocolate sprinkles all over the place. I have to say that the chocolate was good but the service was lacking in the friendly approach."

"I reviewed this some time ago, but I had occasion to dine again recently (May 2024) so I thought I would revisit my review. The restaurant wasn't exactly empty, but it was nowhere near full or half full. That was a great shame as the food and service was excellent. The service was attentive without intruding and putting a jug of water on the table when we arrived was a nice touch. The food was excellent, much better than pub food, it was nicely presented, hot and plentiful. The menu had something for everyone, I didn't realise there was a specials board but I do now and will look out for it on my next visit. I understand the cocktails are worth a look. The staff were friendly and efficient, the duty manager (Gilly) was a great asset to the establishment, if only all restaurant staff were this knowledgeable and effective, perhaps The Stables should be giving Masterclasses on how it should be done. Please take note Wetherspoons. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place. This was my previous review. Excellent food and service. Much more than pub food.."

"This was our first visit to the Hong Kong Chinese restaurant, we were passing and stopped on the off chance they would have space, and they fitted us in no problem. It has the usual Chinese restaurant decor, pretty in a kitsch way. Unassuming and helpful staff, led to an unpretentious and relaxed atmosphere, some 90’s pop tunes playing unobtrusively in the background. We enjoyed this very much, starting with the special mixed hors d'oeuvres for two, the seaweed especially was chunkier than our usual takeaway back home, and we enjoyed it immensely. Presented nicely, no peanut sauce on the satay, but it had a good flavour and didn’t need it. For the mains we had sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style, mixed veg and crispy chilli beef with coconut egg fried rice. Well what an absolute pleasure. The sweet and sour had a vinegar undertone and the usual sweet flavour but not overly sweet and was cooked fresh and very delicious. The mixed veg had a slight crunch and the crispy chilly beef, had a different sauce again, but the batter was light crispy and melted in your mouth. Portion sizes were just right, maybe a touch smaller than some Chinese restaurants I’ve been to, but we’re were pleased with this, we didn’t feel too full afterwards and might have been able to comfortably fit in a dessert, and will do that next time we visit. The coconut egg friend rice was really good too, very aromatic. The only negative was the size of the drinks, my mineral water glass was half the size of my partners coke and it would have been nice to have had a proper glass full. Just a minor niggle. Reasonably priced nonetheless, £48 for the whole meal. I’d definitely recommend, and we will be going back. We really enjoyed the flavours, I haven’t had such a tasty and flavourful fresh Chinese like this for a long time. Again the crispy chilli beef was so light and crispy it will be hard to beat and highly recommended."

"Visited for family Sunday lunch today and it was fantastic! Camembert bites to start, yummy. The roast beef, deliciously rare, lovely Yorkshire’s and veg and cauliflower cheese too. "Called in as in area, not booked, but no problem Warm welcome and happy to run tab for drinks and food for my wife and I Found table in lower area Food selection very good on menu and on specials board, and a good choice of vegetarian options My wife chose roasted veg tart, with chips and salad I chose special salmon with hollandaise, new potatoes and veg Service efficient and polite, wait was not long Food was incredible for taste and size, salmon was perfect, potatoes cooked not microwaved, and the veg included one of the best red cabbage i have had, my wife was perfect pastry not heavy and the topping really good Nice to have the ‘food check’ We ventured to the desserts, my wife white chocolate devil cake, with custard choice, really good size moist and tasty, mine was white choc cheesecake with cream, good size and extremely yummy All in all exceptional food and service at very good price with a team of staff all offering genuine unobtrusive service Highly recommended"

The Fountain Head

"This is a pretty pub with lots of character and charm, situated in a picturesque village. It has the potential to be an absolutely amazing venue. It’s a shame then, that the host on the day we arrived wasn’t at all welcoming. Having walked to Branscombe on the coastal path for 3 hours (on a glorious hot Summer day) we had worked up quite a thirst. We arrived at exactly 3 pm to be told (not very politely) that the bar was closed (despite there being a good number of locals in there with drinks). OK, arguably it was our own fault for not checking opening hours and assuming (wrongly) that a pub in a popular tourist area would be open on a Saturday afternoon during the high season. At the same time, the host could have shown some discretion. The published closing time was 3 pm so he could have served us a drink and allowed us to sit outside (which we would have have been happy to do). The pub is licensed to serve all day so we felt it mean spirited to turn us away. We left thirsty and bitter with a distinct feeling that if you are not a local then you are not welcome here. We instead went to the pub down the road, where we received a friendly reception and lovely pint of Branscombe Brewery beer. We’ll only likely return here if there is a change of ownership. What a pity."

"Can 't say I 'd been impressed with any menu on the 'net before attending but friends wanted to take me for a 'special ' birthday lunch. I remember Combe House in the 'olden ' days a real treat and fabulous cordon bleu food tried not to compare with that but.....definitely not worth the ....1 non alcoholic drink, 2 glasses of Bolli 22 a glass. 2 venison with no potatoes and only 1 small portion of red cabbage on the plates, and 1 lemon sole looking very lonely with nothing else! 1 glass Pinot Noir and tap water. 1 pear pudding and 2 coffees over 200 plus helped themselves to 23.66 'discretionary ' service charge. but with no mention of that! The menu was illegible the print being far too small, staff were pushing any extras they could and waiting staff constantly interrupted sentences i.e. rude/ill trained. Clearly someone considers this a clever money making ruse and if people are prepared to pay well over the odds for very little then they 're winning, but to me it 's a silly ploy. with ghastly tasteless pigs littered all over the venue, and ruins what once was a very special place to dine/enjoy even the name seems wholly inappropriate. How sad an end to what was once my favourite place to dine."

"Went to this pub as it’s within walking distance. Sat outside as a nice evening. Don’t go out much at all as always tired due to getting over bowel cancer. Had a few drinks plus food. The food is very good but very expensive. Prawn cocktail very small for £9.50 and pudding £8.50 but that’s why this place is a treat place not an every day place. We got there just after 6 and left at 8.45 and for a Friday night saw hardly anyone go in or out, think that says it all regards the pricing. Anyway we finished and we always play a game of guessing the price. When we got the bill was abit more than we guessed but thought never mind and my husband can’t see properly without glasses so he paid the bill without me checking. When we got home I re- checked it and we had been over charged for 2 drinks we didn’t have. I had 2 but was charged for 3 and he had 4 but charged for 5! We therefore paid £10.50 more than we should have. He phoned straight away to ask to speak to Miranda the manager but she was too busy apparently, when it was dead and I think that’s extremely unprofessional to not even take our number to get back to us. My husband went up the next day to explain and she acknowledged one drink , mine, was incorrect and said he could have a free drink instead , but alas wouldn’t admit the other drink was wrong, which it was! I was counting drinks for us both and they added £10.50 in for 2 drinks we didn’t have. I’m very angry and upset she wouldn’t admit their wrong doing and personally will never go there again, you spoilt my night out!"

"Terrible. By far the worst customer service I've ever experienced. The tall, weathered-faced angry looking woman who seemed to be in charge served me at the bar, already looking peeved, yes i then forgot my table number, went to look then came back, man she's huffing and puffing, tapping fingers, a 50 year old acting like a stroppy teenager. Finally transaction went through, she walked off not even offering a receipt, i had to overtly request it, she gave it reluctantly. Then the food, barely adequate, undercooked, overpriced. Very odd atmosphere, also young staff look clueless, all just standing around looking uninterested in working. Lazy staff. Terrible place. Avoid like the plague."
