"We don’t eat out much but in the last few years have had lunch or dinner out a few times. Especially as have to take elderly relatives out for a treat. Most recently had come t o decision I would just in future buy sandwiches from M&S . The trend seems to be toward lego shaped cubes of unrecognisable treats such as smoked salmon ?puree? or last Xmas ordered turkey which had been processed and squeezed into a stocking shaped roll of which we each had one’slice’ I just couldn’t eat it!! Was recommended I try Goblin Ha in Gifford which was conveniently near a relatives house. Not expecting much. So what a surprise. Real food. Real soup. Real recognisable starter of prawn cocktail. Real main course. Haddock. Brilliant. Haggis delicious. Puddings yummy. Don’t know what the others ordered. I couldn’t finish mine there was too much. All perfectly cooked and presented . It wasnt expensive . £170 for 7 of us most with starter main and dessert. And drinks. (ordered one bottle wine) Don’t know how they do it. Has been ‘taken over since last visited few years ago. Unfortunately because of family circumstances unlikely will be able to go often but thoroughly recommend to anyone . The layout has also been changed and our young relatives were delighted to see 2 geese in comfy enclosure. Thoroughly recommend to anyone not just for value of money but for enjoyable edible food."

"Our experience of visiting Merryhatton Garden Centre for lunch today has ensured that we won’t be returning anytime soon. There were three of us: my wife and I with our two-year-old grandson. The restaurant was busy but there was no waiting for a table; it was only after we were seated that the waiting began! It took about 15 minutes before our order was taken; one soup, one panini and one children’s box to include a ham sandwich and a box of orange juice. After about 15 minutes, the adults’ drinks were served but there was no milk for the tea (which had been requested) and nothing for the little boy. After a further 30+ minute wait – during which time we asked twice when our food would be served – it eventually arrived … for the adults. A further reminder had to be given before the child’s box arrived … which was very disappointing. The orange juice ordered was served as apple juice and the ham sandwich looked more like something you might serve in a truckers’ ‘greasy spoon’ caf’. The ‘doorsteps’ of cold, hard bread with thick crusts contained several slices of what looked more like gammon steak than ham suitable for a two-year-old and, needless to say, was not eaten. Had it been served to me, I wouldn’t have eaten it either. When I went to pay the bill, I commented to our server that we were less than impressed. He apologised for the delays because they were “busy” and said he would let the kitchen know that we weren’t happy with the ham sandwich. I expressed surprise that the the price of the sandwich wasn’t being deducted from our bill and was told that couldn’t be done. Another member of staff made the comment that, if the sandwich was too big, my grandson, “… could have eaten a bit of it.” I consider it unacceptable to keep a two-year-old waiting for so long for a poor attempt at a child’s meal. The food which my wife and I had was fine but to serve it more than half-an-hour after the drinks was also unacceptable. Merryhatton Garden Centre is well placed to provide an enjoyable eating out experience but their lack of an adequate system for serving food coupled with their poor customer service has left us feeling very let down."

"A classic old school style chippy, run by an enthusiastic, passionate Scottish-Italian family, the Townhouse Fish Bar has everything the discerning customer could desire. All of the original dishes from the fryer menu are available, the chips themselves are top notch, golden, crispy and fluffy on the inside... The pizza is fantastic using special dough from naples, the kebabs are awesome, everything is made fresh, and if there is something more modern that you can't see on the menu just ask and if they can accommodate you they will :D (my personal favourite is the humble yet tasty scooby snack) prices are reasonable, portion sizes are GENEROUS, the flavours are big and delicious... The service is wonderful, with all the staff working hard to ensure happy and satisfied customers. The banter is brilliant too, if these folks opened up in Edinburgh central they would steal everyones business and on a Friday/Saturday night the que would be out the door and around the corner... I've been eating there now roughly once a week for almost a year, the place is spotless... I've never had a bad meal and I can't wait till the next one... To summarise, when was the last time you really enjoyed a chippy the kind that takes you back to being a kid after swimming or en route home after a wild night out? Where the smell of the food leads you in through the doors with your mouth beginning to water and your belly beginning to rumble... This is THE place, so don't waste time thanking me, just grab your coat or your phone and get the order in :D Service: Take out Meal type: Dinner Price per person: £10–20 Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5 Recommended dishes: Mixed Meat Kebab"
