"Any redemptive qualities this restaurant may have had were quickly (or should I say very slowly, as you'll see) erased by the poor service. My wife and I went to L'Ovale and each ordered the three course menu. We realized only after finishing our first course that we appeared to be the only table in the restaurant who had not been given bread, which would have come in handy for our choices. After the first course, we waited about an hour with nothing. No check in from the servers to see if we needed more drinks, but more than that, it was as though everyone who worked there had disappeared. They simply ignored those of us who were seated outside. The second course, we each got Coq au Vin, was fine, but not better than a recipe we have made ourselves at home. After that, I got my dessert -- a chocolate cake -- after another agonizing wait between the end of the second course and the serving of the third. The cake was more of a mousse, which I consider myself a big fan of. However, we then saw that anyone else getting the chocolate cake was also served whipped cream on the side. No big deal, I may not have even used it, but it showed me that there was confusion on the staff's part that they had neglected our bread and this whipped cream. We then asked for our check and the waiter went back inside, went into the kitchen for 5-10 minutes, then stood behind the bar talking, then sat down and started to eat a full plate of his own dinner right on the other side of the window from us. After at least 20 minutes of waiting after asking for our check, I had to go inside to the counter and get the woman (owner, perhaps?) to handle it. And of course, somehow, she rang up the wrong table and tried charging us for wine we never purchased. Though wine, I believe, would have been the only way we could have made our dinner at L'Ovale bearable. Lots of wine."

"Portovenere has a family restaurant feel to it. There are locals, or even annual visitors like the couple who sat next to us, who have developed quite a rapport with both the chef/owner and the service staff. That made for an enjoyable atmosphere as there was conversation flowing all night. My wife got rigatoni with tomato and basil, which was a very simple dish, but full of wonderful flavor. I chose the tortellini in a tomato and pesto cream sauce and was in no way disappointed with my selection. Our garden salad and grilled vegetables to start were delicious, and the house wine was exactly what we hoped for -- good quality for an even better price. The highlight, even with everything else tasting so good, was this overflowing with goodness tiramisu that we were served after hours of conversation with nearby patrons and the staff. This stuff is write-home-to-your-mother good. Finally, I want to point out that a young man walked up to the restaurant at about 11:07 p.m. and asked for dinner, but the owner pointed out that they had just closed at 11:00 and he could not serve him. The young man understood and was clearly disappointed, but as he walked away, the owner called to him and motioned for him to sit at the table closest to the door. The staff re-set the table and served him what looked like a delicious steak meal. That told me everything I needed to know about the sort of people who are taking care of you when you decide to have your dinner at Portovenere in Nice."
