"We arrived early and were directed to the restaurant area by the hotel receptionist, walking through a beautiful carved dark wood hallway. There were hand sanitizing points throughout, but most of them were empty. However, one of them was working. We were warmly welcomed and shown into the room where we would be dining. Unfortunately, the restaurant room was in use for a private function, so the dining area we were seated in was vast and nearly empty. Nonetheless, we were optimistic about having a unique experience. The waiter explained the menu options (sweet or savory, but not both) and took our orders. We all opted for savory options, which was a pleasant change from the mostly cake-focused afternoon teas we have had elsewhere. There was a good selection of teas available, but the only coffee choices were americano and latte, with no indication of the type of coffee used or other options. Fortunately, the coffee was enjoyable and the leaf teas were nicely presented. After about forty minutes, our food arrived. The portions were a bit on the small side, but most of the items were delicious. The cheese scones were a bit dense, dry, and bland, but everything else was of high quality. We were not offered refills on our food plates, which would have been a nice touch considering the price. When we requested more tea and coffee from a waitress, she was unresponsive. In hindsight, it may have been helpful for the waiter to introduce her to us. Thankfully, when we asked the waiter to check on our beverages, they arrived promptly. When it came time to settle the bill, we noticed a service charge added, which felt a bit presumptuous given the slow start and the empty room. However, the waiter was diligent and deserved the tip. Overall, the initial greeting, most of the food, and the majority of the service were excellent. The ambiance was slightly awkward due to the large, nearly empty room and the somber background music. It would have been nice to have food refills and a description of the coffee. Additionally, it would have been great to have the option to add a sweet item to the savory menu and vice versa. In conclusion, it was a very good but not particularly remarkable experience at a high price point."

"We have been here a few times and always been very pleased with the service and the food but after last nights visit we are left wondering what on earth has gone wrong. Our drinks order was taken but we only had 1 beer and 3 soft drinks so luckily they didn’t get this wrong but the first warning sign was the ayran which was watery and insipid. We were a party of four but only two of us had starters. The chicken wings were nice but at £6.75 for just 4 part wings this was extortionate. The meatballs were inedible. The quality of the mince used to make the meatballs was very poor as it seemed to include a lot of sinew, tendon and unidentifiable “other” meat. The meatballs were sent back. The mains came out minus the salad which we had to ask for. The vegetable Guvic was missing its feta so it was sent back. When it came out again there was no feta but just melted cheddar on top. When this was questioned we were told they had run out of feta. All four mains where served with rice that was so over cooked it was just mush and could be picked up in lumps see photo My adana kebab was made of the same poor quality mince as the meatballs and was equally inedible. see photo When we asked for vinegar we were given olive oil. When we spoke with the waitress she explained that they were under new management who had changed the meat supplier. No restaurant is going to,change a supplier unless they are cheaper and this was evident in the poor quality meat. She also explained that four out of five of the kitchen staff were new and she was “dealing with imbeciles”. The restaurant has an open kitchen and it was no wonder the food was so poor as the kitchen was in chaos. When our bill came they had removed the meatballs and the guvic and reduced the bill by 10% but the bill still came to £64 and we thought this was unacceptable considering that most of the meal was uneaten or returned to the kitchen. We said that we would pay £50 but the waitress said that she wasn’t willing to negotiate and we said that neither were we and left £50 cash and walked out. To give her her due we felt sorry for the waitress trying her best but having to deal with poor kitchen staff and serve really bad food. This place really needs to sort it’s staff out and get a decent meat supplier or it won’t be around much longer"

"Update 14/8/20 There are very many reasons to visit the West Kirby Tap: delightful venue, wonderful staff, great cask ales, relaxed atmosphere... and one more reason added to the list recently, fantastic pizza menu, they are absolutely superb! Update 22/7/20 The West Kirby Tap has now reopened after lockdown. A very simple customer registration process is in place, accomplished either by a smartphone QR code scan or good old pen and paper. Social distancing and hygiene measures are excellent. Seating capacity inside has reduced slightly but that doesn 't affect the pub 's delightful ambience one iota. Seating capacity outside has increased via the introduction of four seater benches. Table service is in place, and bar orders are given verbally to the attentive, ever-circulating bar staff. The cask ale quality is, as always, superb. Superb brewery outlet with a relaxed atmosphere and a range of 8 guest cask ales covering a spectrum of beer/cider styles plus 3 craft ales. As you might expect in a brewery tap, beer quality is outstanding. Staff are very friendly and know their stuff ale-wise. Food is limited to cold plates, but is very good indeed. Has become my go-to pub for great beer. However, the entertainment on Saturdays is of a variable standard and can be very loud. My umpteenth visit today, beer food and atmosphere superb as usual. The music playlist varies in terms of genre considerably . If Nick is on the premises, it will be good. Just called in for coffee today, it 's (almost) as good as the beer, sat outside in the surprisingly-warm February sunshine, watching the world go by, very pleasant. Food: 5 Service: 5 Atmosphere: 5"
