"Review written on 7 October 2021: I have been a loyal customer of AtariYa in Kingston for many years since it first opened, but my recent visit with a friend left me extremely disappointed. In fact, we were so appalled that we decided to leave. Both my friend and I wore masks during our visit. With my deep connection to Japanese culture through my family and years of experience living, working, and traveling in Japan, I have a refined palate for authentic Japanese cuisine. Unfortunately, on this visit, I was disappointed to find a limited selection of sushi Bento boxes that lacked the quality and freshness I had come to expect from AtariYa. In addition, I noticed that some items in the shop were not actually made in Japan, which was misleading. When I inquired about this to a non-Japanese staff member behind the counter, I received no clear explanation. Furthermore, I was concerned about the hygiene practices of the staff as I observed them not properly wearing their masks, especially while handling raw fish during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. This, coupled with a smaller selection of fish at the sashimi counter and the lack of adherence to proper hygiene practices by both staff and customers, left me deeply disappointed. I have raised similar concerns in the past with AtariYa and received an apology, but it seems that the issue persists. As a patron with high expectations for Japanese cuisine, I find it crucial for establishments claiming to serve authentic Japanese food to uphold the standards of quality and hygiene. Unfortunately, my recent experience at AtariYa fell short of these expectations, and I will not be returning, nor will I recommend it to others."

We purchased some ready made sushi for lunch as we were in a hurry, the food was good as always and was reasonable value. This is the best place in the local area for Sushi.

I love this place for its consistency in delivering excellent value sushi and the friendly attitude of staff. This is the best bang for buck sushi you'll get anywhere in London from the numerous places I've sampled

This is the best place in the local area to get Sushi, its often busy so it is best to order it via phone and then go a collect it. The selection of sushi options is much wider than anywhere else, they have several grades of Tuna, butter fish, yellow tail, sea bream, seabags etc whereas most places in town only really sell Salmon and Tuna.

A small Japanese supermarket with Sushi prepared to order. We stopped for lunch as they have a few tables outside and it was a sunny day. Simple to order Sushi and Sashimi made up for you, or you can choose something already packed from the cold cabinet. The kids where welcome to watch the chiefs prepare the food and enjoyed their choices. All in all very good, apart from maybe the reheating if some dishes/ingredients like teriyaki.

This restaurant used to be great, but today they were open (although Apple Maps indicated they were temporarily closed) with a sign requesting customers to wear masks and only allowing two customers in at a time, which seemed reasonable. However, when we entered, I noticed that the sushi and sashimi chefs were not wearing masks. They simply stated they had been tested for the virus nearly a month ago. Additionally, the new employees seemed to lack knowledge (relying on reading the back of products for answers), which was disappointing considering how often we used to visit. It's not the same as it used to be. Speisekarte ansehen

This used to be my number one sushi/sashimi place and I felt lucky to live close to it for visits a few times a week. Having been away, I came along today to be met with all new Asian (not Japanese or oriental) faces. It has really changed the vibe of the place which was quintessentially Japanese. The sashimi I ordered was okay and the sushi was okay, but neither like it used to be. Felt like going to an ITSU or similar, with all the old charm gone. This is such a shame. There is a skill to sushi and sashimi, it isn’t just raw fish and rice. That’s what my food tasted like today, the latter. It’s very, very sad

I have been a loyal customer of this restaurant for many years and have always found it to be excellent. However, upon returning from living abroad, I was disappointed to see that the quality had changed. My party ordered a large amount of sushi and sashimi, but when we received the bill, there was no detailed breakdown of the costs. Upon opening the food at home, we were surprised by the small portions and poor quality. Having lived in Asia for a few years, I know that the way Japanese rice is cooked and seasoned can really make a difference in the taste. The way the sashimi was sliced was also subpar and not up to the standards of a professional sushi chef. Unfortunately, I can no longer r...

"Obon: a petit Japanese udon restaurant that supplies a sense of Japan that cannot be found anywhere else in the whole of the Uk. (5 stars) Location: Obon is located close to the heart of Kingston but the road it’s on is considerably quieter. You must make sure to have a basic knowledge of Kingston in order to find an area to park and to also make sure you leave yourself enough time, taking the unpredictability of the traffic into acount. Even on a week day there can be traffic jams which can put a halt to your plans and due to the small amount of customers Obon can take its important that you not only book but make sure that you arrive at the agreed booking time. With this being said the staff are all lovely so if you are running late, a quick call is all that is required to just give Obon a chance to understand your position. The food: The array of exquisitely prepared sashimi will be sure to create the sensation that you are in a top Japanese restaurant in japan and the flavour of the fish does not fail to match expectations, which will be very high after just one glance at your meal. The fish is delicately seasoned and practically melts on your tongue, this causes a lovely sensation and is genuinely the finest sushi I have tasted in the uk and even matches a lot of the top restaurants in japan. On top of just the traditional types of sushi, which to many is maki rolls Obon also offers many other delicious options such as soft shell crab and even Unagi don, which I must highly recommend due to it consistently being the highlight of my meal. For those of you that were interested in the quality of the basic Japanese dishes such as miso soup or edamame they do not fail to leave you in grand anticipation for what is to come for they are, simply speaking, incredibly good. The miso, in my opinion, is truly remarkable and creates a lasting feeling of warmth throughout your entire body, on top of that it is far superior to other miso’s that I have tasted in all other areas of the world. Overall the quality of the food is something you would expect from a world famous Michelin star restaurant and if you want Japanese food it’s the only place I can recommend. The Restaurant: The restaurant itself is small but authentic in nature and because it only has a enough tables to host around 20 people at the most, the service is exceptionally good and your food is always out quickly so you will not be left hungry for very long. The staff are kind and friendly. And it’s always an enjoyable experience being waves goodbye as you leave the restaurant. You’re also able to watch as they prepare the food, which for some could be entertaining. There are Japanese photos scattered around the room and this further creates an authentic feel. The atmosphere is not lively but it is a restaurant and not a bar so is an ideal location if you are wanting high quality food. With this being said it is still a great place to go with friends and I consistently am able to have a great time no matter the occasion. Price: Obviously, the price of the food is always an important topic to come to and despite the cost of the sushi being slightly higher than you may expect from a small restaurant in Kingston, I would have to say that for the quality of the food it is ultimately a bargain. For three people, you would be spending around £100 so it isn’t cheap but you can go for cheaper types of food such as udon, which is still amazing quality and won’t set you back as much money. Overall: Obon is still my favourite restaurant in the whole of the Uk and is perfect for a special occasion but it isn’t the sort of place you’d go for a casual night out. The food is beyond incredible and thus they can cater for both children and adults by meeting every bodies needs. For anybody that enjoys sushi, I would urge you to give it a go, you won’t regret it"
