"Until I moved from the area 14 years ago, I was a regular visitor to Dartington. Films, festivals, recitals and just sunny afternoons out. And of course, these were always accompanied by visits to the bar and to the restaurant. I was excited to be returning after such a long time to enjoy a Sunday lunch on a sunny day in September. Oh dear! First we were hit by a charge to park our car in the virtually empty car park £1.50 an hour. No mention of that on the website. Then the pub itself, that has all changed around. The cosy little bar has gone, and what was once a magnificent dining hall is now the Bar cum Dining Hall, a rather austere place to have a quiet drink, but a rather public place to have an intimate lunch or supper and the warning signs were there, of the ten tables set for dining. Only one, my booking, was used in the time that we were there, which was between 1 pm and 3 pm on a Sunday. The Food. My partner and I both ordered the roast topside of beef. When it came there was an instant visual disappointment. The “Yorkshire pudding“ was, in fact, a rather fat and floppy fried pancake with slightly greasy crispy edges. It was draped over two boiled potatoes and some slices of roast beef. Accompanying the plated food was a rather nice broccoli and cauliflower in cheese sauce, and some rather undercooked carrots and cabbage. The beef itself was quite tasty, but chewy at times. Service throughout was mediocre, borderline rude at times. It certainly didn’t leave a good impression. We were very disappointed with our meal, the ambience and the parking charges. I will not be returning. (note to chef try using plain flour in your Yorkies)."

Such a beautiful pub in a beautiful setting. Lovely friendly staff who were attentive and efficient. Perfect pub lunch with good-size portions too.

I had an early supper before the crowds probably the best time to eat. I ordered pan fried hake on a chowder base and the hake was crispy and meaty and the chowder was a creamy base with cubed potatoes and peas. It was very good. Service was attentive and charming.

The menu offers a variety of options, the food is delicious, and the service is friendly. The quality of the food surpasses typical pub fare and could easily fit in at a high-end restaurant with elegant table settings. However, the overall experience was a bit odd as the food arrived quickly and there was no distinct pub or restaurant ambiance.

A delicious lunch for 2; hubby had a well filled and tasty coronation chicken baguette and I the ploughmans no ordinary ploughmans though. The bread was gorgeous; crusty and warm from the oven, smoked salmon and mackerel and a tasty slice of quiche accompanied by a colourful salad with a red cabbage slaw. We hoovered up every last bit, thank you Speisekarte ansehen

Service, food and drink outstanding. Greeted politely. Great choice of food. I chose the beef and ale pie and it was amazing. Fresh veg and mash beautifully cooked as well. My partner had the burger which was amazing too. Nice choice of puddings and good size serving. Really good value for money compared to many places around. Thank you for restoring our enjoyment of eating out!

I went to this restaurant for Mother's Day lunch, and it was my first time there. I was amazed by the venue - it was impressive. The food was fantastic and served hot. We ordered 1 fish pie, 2 gammon dishes, and 2 roast chicken dishes at our table. The desserts we had were delicious. I appreciated that they use many local suppliers. The staff, despite being young, were excellent - nothing was too much trouble for them. My only complaint was the barking dogs we had to endure. The owners should have handled that better. However, I still think the overall experience was excellent and wouldn't lower my rating of the restaurant.

The food and atmosphere were surprisingly mediocre for a setting as magnificent as Dartington. It’s difficult to rate the service. Two of the three staff members we met were friendly and conscientious.I’d give them 5 stars. Our principle server however, was on the arrogant side. In spite of that, I decided to leave a good tip. He then approached me at the bar when I was paying the tab and said “cash tips are preferred”. I explained that we are from out of the country and didn’t have any British cash. It was an awkward ending when we were trying to be generous after a forgettable meal. My advice, dear readers, is to consider the negative reviews. Service and food quality seem to be hit or miss... Disaster lunch. Lack of atmosphere, lack of heat, lack of comfort...ordered Ham ,egg and chips to be told not available due to lack of a chef, there was also a lack of sliced bread for sandwiches or toastie. When our food arrived the order was wrong so returned 1 dish, but both meals left alot to be desired. There was a lack of organisation and what looked like a lack of management. 2 glasses of wine we ordered given free did not compensate the poor experience, could not blame the staff, they were left to get on with it. And in the beginning to have to pay £6 to park my car in a potholed, hardcore car park, The whole set up at the estate needs attention. Its a good job we enjoyed the film at T...

We traveled from Liverpool to visit my son and his family, who were staying at a lovely hall. As a treat for 8 of us, we booked a table at the White Hart. Upon arrival, we bought ourselves drinks as no one came to offer us any. It took some time to get the attention of the staff, who seemed more interested in chatting among themselves. The food was served with a lengthy delay, causing some of us to start eating before everyone was served to prevent the dishes from getting cold. Unfortunately, three of us found the fish pie to be inedible due to its high vinegar content, and four of us found the garlic potatoes accompanying the chicken supreme to be overly garlic-flavored. We informed our ser...

"The positive is that the food is good. But the negative is the service time and the attitude of the staff. We were seated and had our order taken after 20 minutes. A little slow but it was a busy Saturday evening so understandable. Starters came promptly and were eaten. We then got ignored by every passing member of staff for at least 50 minutes. Quite the skill! Once there was a break in our conversation and I realised how long it had been, I stood up to intercept a waitress and asked “are our mains on the way, please?” Our ticket was checked by her at the kitchen hatch and we were told “yes”. At this point our starter plates were cleared after they had sat on the table for at least 35 minutes. Our mains then took another 25 minutes to get to us, so I suspect that being told they were on their way was a lie. To be clear: we were given our mains 1hr 20 mins after placing our order. I complained to a waitress who sent over a manager. The manager asked if we’d had starters (yes, we had) and said that it was our fault our main was so late as we’d had a first course. How insulting!!! Blaming the customer for their bad service. Disgusting. When I said it was still far too long to wait between courses she then changed tack and said the kitchen was “really really busy” well, they weren’t busy cooking our food now were they?! And despite the place being full when we arrived, by this point of the night over half the tables were empty. There were 3 tickets on the pass along with ours and tables were 2 4 people (no large groups) so I feel that was also another lie to get out of it. What a shocking way to treat customers! My advice to you is: if you want your food served in a timely manner, either take the advice of the manager and don’t order a starter, or, be sure to communicate with waitstaff once your first course is finished and ask for your main to be cooked and served promptly. (Note: food also sat under the heat lamps for long lengths of time as staff stood socialising with one another behind the bar rather than serve customers) I hope this advice is of use as I would have appreciated it ahead of my visit! Good luck. [Reading other reviews, ours is not the only experience of slow service and seeing staff chat to one another rather than deal with the customers paying their wages.
