"We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. After recently arriving in the lovely town of Appleby, we decided to stop in for a bite to eat. We spoke to a local builder and his wife who both highly recommended the sirloin steak. When a farmer recommends something, you listen! I'm so happy I ordered it because it was cooked to perfection and incredibly juicy, all for a reasonable price of £15.95. My companion had the roast beef, which was also excellent and came in a generous portion size. We will definitely be returning this week."

"Just about only cafe open on Sunday morning, small cafe, we had coffee and scones. Everything was fine, reasonably priced, nice coffee. Asked for scone to be heated 10 secs in microwave, Heating a scone makes all the diff. Jam before cream ?? that was the question well I put jam on then clotted cream !! the cream was a bit firm and hard to spread on top of jam so recommmed if cream firm put it on first then the jam."

"Not been here before but previous reviews regarding the landlady are borne out in my visit. Visited at the weekend, consequently very busy and very noisy. Menu is more interesting than most pubs although I cannot say the food was especially good, though not bad. Seems to depend on which dish you choose. Service from the young staff was good, no long delays. The landlady seemed fine too, until it was time to get the bill. I went to the bar where everyone behind it was busy. I waited for a few minutes, then, beginning to feel invisible, I waved discreetly to the landlady, who was doing something with glasses and talking to customers she obviously knew. She said these people were waiting too, although I couldn't see anyone serving them. I simply asked her to prepare my bill as soon as she was ready. It was brought to my table fairly quickly so no complaints there. But when I went to pay it she seemed happy to ignore me once more, again while doing stuff with glasses. Fortunately one of the young staff was able to show her how customer service should be done and took my payment. The landlady's attitude seems so unnecessary. Perhaps she regarded us as tourists, though we are relatively local. Bein local I know better pubs in the area and won't be returning to the Stag."

"This charming restaurant is definitely worth a visit, as it is managed by a delightful couple who excel in their craft. They welcome dogs, and you might even have the chance to meet their adorable pub dog! All the dishes were freshly prepared, and they provided us with detailed explanations of the menu as well as expert advice on drinks. My husband particularly enjoyed the local Settle Brewery beer. The pub fare was delicious, with the lamb shank being a standout dish. The restaurant is located in a lovely historic setting, and the real fire adds a cozy touch on chilly, rainy evenings. We were able to walk in without a reservation, but I would recommend booking in advance during peak season. Note that they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays."

"After completing Ben Nevis, one of our fellow friends became unwell and was unable to to continue to the other mountains to complete the ’Three peaks’ under 24hrs. We see this amazing castle on route back and checked in later that evening. The grounds facilities are stunning. They where very accommodating with their restaurant menu. We were served with outstanding food and the personal touch especially with the Chef ‘Chris’ who actually came out and presented what we were eating which I thought was a really great touch! He then personally gave us his time to even show us around some of the castle which was a great way to fishing off our night. Our first visit even thou a short stay, I would highly recommend to stay and eat here. Thank you."
