"This was not the most appealing pub in terms of decor and ambiance. The corridors contained various cardboard boxes, the carpets were rucked up, and we were seated in a very sterile restaurant area with no ambiance/music and very basic functional furniture. However we did get a warm welcome and generally the service was ok efficient, friendly and attentive, though the “dress” of one person we considered inappropriate for food service. Another server didn’t communicate just placed plates down in front of us. The menu was basic pub grub but all the food we had was fine, well cooked and hot. The steak “pie” actually turned out to be a suet pudding which my husband really enjoyed, however we heard another customer ask about the pie pastry before ordering and he was told it was shortcrust!!! (When it arrived he was complaining). Servers really ought to know details of what’s on the menu. Overall we felt the whole place was a bit 'down ' and certainly wouldn’t consider returning."

I dined at this restaurant twice while staying in Kirkby Stephens - once outside and once inside. The food was fantastic and they had a nice variety of beers and gins to choose from. The best part was that dogs are allowed in the bar and they even receive treats from the friendly staff.

We booked a room here for two nights, never been this far north before so had no idea where to stay. We could not have had a better welcome, the Manager was amazing went out of his way to cook what we wanted for breakfast and bar service was excellent. Lovely warm people here especially the staff. The restaurant gives a misleading impression from the outside. Although it appears to be a large hotel from the front, the bar area is actually quite small. The menu is typical of a standard bar. Despite lacking in atmosphere, it was understandable as it was a dark and cold December night on a Sunday.

I recently stopped by this pub while passing through Kirkby Stephen and was thoroughly impressed. We all ordered the carvery and the beef was cooked to a perfect pink in the middle, served with a variety of fresh vegetables. The sticky toffee pudding for dessert was also delicious, and the staff were very friendly.

My wife and i were set to complete the coast to coast with this venue being booked well over 6months in advance. I had reserved a room. Learned that the venue was shut from january to february. despite numerous attempts to call and email since december 2021 i have heard nothing. I have therefore taken my business elsewhere. We visited this pub for a couple of drinks and decided to come for a meal the next night. My partner had the steak and ale pudding (which was huge) and I had goats cheese nut roast. Both were fantastic and we ate every scrap. So nice as a vegetarian to get a good helping and a choice of mains, not just the one. The staff we met were all very friendly and helpful and we will definitely eat here again on our next visit.

I booked a table early in the morning for 7.30 later that evening. When I got there at 7.30pm I was told that they had left me a voicemail that they had to move my booking to 7pm due to a 'mix up ' and were now unable to accommodate me. I had walked 25 miles that day as part of my coast to coast walk and had been looking forward to a good pub meal all day. I had no reception most of the time whilst walking so did not receive a voicemail. It would have been prudent of the staff to phone me again nearer the time to check I had received the voicemail, but that didnt happen. Was even more annoying the fact that I had got to Kirby Stephen at 5pm and was waiting around for my booking. All other pl...

"We had a disappointing experience during our stay. The bedroom was quite cold, and despite asking for the heating to be turned on, we had to sit in our coats. The bathroom was freezing each morning, and the dining room didn't offer much relief either. The heating was activated for just one hour, which meant the radiator was cold again when we returned to our room. Their cost-cutting measures significantly impacted our enjoyment. We raised our concerns multiple times, but there was no one available when we settled the bill. At £100 per night for bed and breakfast (totaling over £200 including dinner), it was frustrating to be so uncomfortable. Another guest mentioned they had complained about the heating during their previous visit, only to be told there was an ongoing issue. It seems they simply won’t turn on the heating. We won’t be returning, especially since it’s quite a drive to get into town. Regarding the room, we were assigned an attic room (Room 8). It had many steep stairs and low headroom in places. While the bathroom was nice, it was also freezing. The towel rail was pointless since it was stone cold, and my husband had to skip his morning shower due to the chill. We ended up moving to Room 7, which was smaller but slightly warmer despite having a cold bathroom. The bathroom door didn’t shut properly, and the lights were all or nothing. The next morning, we moved our belongings back to Room 8 since they finally decided to turn on the electric wall heater—which they could have done from the outset. It only took the chill off for a little while. On our last night, we experienced a brief boost of heat, but it only lasted an hour. When we returned after dinner, the room was already cool again. As for nearby activities, there’s a park across a busy road, but everything else requires driving to reach shops and restaurants. Safety-wise, the hotel faces a main road, and there are very few parking spaces available (around four); otherwise, you need to park on the main road. Walking to town is possible, but it takes about 15 to 20 minutes downhill. In terms of food and drinks, the breakfast was decent. When asked if we wanted toast, we received just one slice on the same plate as the cooked breakfast. After asking for more, we had to wait a while before we were given another slice. Dinner was acceptable but nothing to write home about; it felt overpriced compared to the excellent authentic Indian restaurant we found in town, which served great food at better prices and opened at 5 PM. Overall, I'd recommend bringing warm clothes for both the bedroom and dining area; we even saw another guest sitting in her coat the entire time."
