"We were recommended this restaurant and it has taken us some time to finally get here. The building is historic and well maintained, bare floor boards add to the character but do little to dampen the background noise from a full restaurant. The food is traditionally English, in season and well cooked and presented. You have a choice between a 2/3 fixed price menu (3 choices for each course) and an A la Carte I had tomato and onion soup, a great dish, along with Sea Bass, with prawns, hasselback potatoes, whilst my partner had haddock with a dill and cream sauce, followed by rice pudding with maple apples (brilliant). So why 4 rather than 5 stars, the service, was friendly but the one server was rushed, covering the whole restaurant (it appeared which had a number of different rooms). A couple of time things were promised , water, which never appeared, a wine list arriving 15 or so minutes later long pauses between courses, with empty plates. We felt sorry for the waitress. I first read about The Old Fire Engine House in advance of a weekend coach tour of East Anglia in May 2014, staying in Ely Travelodge.

After sales service is not normally a concept associated with restaurants. However, in my case, I would like to focus upon the excellent way they helped me. Foolishly I left my mobile phone in the restaurant at around 10.15pm. By 10.30 pm, they had taken the care and initiative, to ring my landlines to say We have found your phone. You can collect tomorrow from the office . I arrived at 8.30am the following morning, was greeted most helpfully, and my phone was returned. Splendid service indeed. They do care. "The service was ok, drinks arrived very quickly. The waitress told us to wait before going to queue for our carvery as “there are too many people there”. I went after a bit, took my place in the queue only for another customer to barge in front of me, his friend then barged in behind him and said “I’m with him”. He did have the decency to say to the first guy that they had barged in front of me, and I just said “fill your boots”. The service at the carvery was woefully slow and with a queue of at least 6 people waiting, the chef just walked off into the kitchen. No apology, no explanation, there was another chef filling everything up so I don’t think he’d gone off to replenish supplies. I went back to the table and said I’d wait a bit, and that two people had rudely barged in front of me and the waitress happened to be near us and overheard. She apologised profusely and obviously knew who it was and said that they are “very demanding”. I went back to try again, the people who had barged in front of me were only then being served and then a waitress brought up one of their partners and pushed them in front of me too. I went and had a look at the food while I was waiting and wasn’t impressed so I went back and said to my husband we’d go elsewhere. I went to pay for the drinks and the same waitress apologised again, to be honest I would have expected to be offered the drinks on the house, but although very apologetic we still got charged. Appalling, you couldn’t pay me to try and eat there again"
