"Salmon starter was very dry and tasteless. Mixed kebab had very little salad with it. Mains very salty. Naan bread not cooked. Cauliflower side dish was mainly potato. Overall was left feeling disappointed"

"This is my second visit in a year. The first time I picked the restaurant as it does a wide range of fish dishes and they did a good job. The second visit was very disappointing. I pre-ordered the surf and turf which was a.. special deal Well the one thing that made it stand out from the crowd was the size of the half lobster that accompanied the fillet steak. I'm surprised the lobster (Mrs P had the other half) was big enough to remain on the boat rather than being thrown back to let it grow a little more. It was also a little chewy and I felt ripped off. The steak was okay but I feel the meal was spoiled by the tiny lobster. The surroundings are quite dated but I went back the second time because the food more than made up for it; sadly that was not the case this time."

"Staying in Ellsworth this week and decided to try The Poacher for our dinner (4 adults) . Well what a treat. The home cooked food was absolutely delicious. Home cooked , is such an over used term, but this was just that. The 2 chaps went for Wagu burgers , which they said were juicy and lean and delicious. My friend , a super cook and foodie herself, had Scampi , which she said was the best she ever tasted and in 30 years I have never heard her say that about anything we have eaten away from home . I had a wonderful childhood memory lane comfort meal. A beautifully prepared and cooked, meaty real Smoked Haddock fillet on proper mash with perfectly cooked cabbage and cauliflower, topped with creamy parsley sauce. My tastebuds were transported to my grandmother’s kitchen from many decades gone . Strangely the landlord said the dish was in memory of his grandfather. We were definitely full after main course but couldn’t resist a peak at the desert menu. Oh my poor waist band. I thought I made a great sponge but wow the sticky ginger sponge with juicy chunks of stem ginger and perfect custard sauce accompaniment really was the icing on the comfort food cake. Great, super friendly service and bar . All in all a damn good find . I have never written a review for a pub restaurant before but I felt compelled. If you like good honest, well sourced, local unpretentious food , then this place will definitely not let you down."

"Afternoon tea Good points: The food was fresh and of good quality, they had listened and followed our requirements. The food was tasty and the taste combinations good. The quantity of food was also very good. Downside: Wish we could have eaten in the garden area or the terrace, when asked we got told this wasn’t possible. But couldn’t see a reason why this wasn’t possible. Ag the very least an area set for tea parties would have been more desirable and we would have returned if the garden was an option. Cutlery, tea cups and tea pot were all very low quality and that you would expect at an old persons home or hospital. No offer of what type of tea we would like either. The elderflower drink tasted like sparkling water with a touch of elderflower cordial this could be improved. Staff weren’t ready for our arrival and stated “sorry we’ve been busy” but half the restaurant was full. The atmosphere was lacking. No offer of anything else. Lacking some finishing touches and details but was ok."

"I came to dinner with my sister on January 4th, 2023. we were pleasantly surprised how busy the place was. the mere fact that there were so many people in the middle of the first week of work after the X-mas-New year was already a good sign. the place is beautifully landscaped with vintage sesseln from an old cinema house. that added to the cozy, unusual atmosphere. the service was fantastic: friendly and timely. the food was good quality, delicious, good size shares and worth for money. the waiter went an additional mile in taking up our special food requirements and even offered to a customized vegetable mix side dish. that's something you don't look over very often these days. in the background there was a little music. it did not interfere in our conversation, but created an even more pleasant environment. the place should remain open until 9.30 clock after the website, but we stayed chatting until 10.15 pm and no one rushed us out. all in all, we had the most pleasant at night and would recommend it to everyone."
