Ate here on Saturday night, August, quaint pub,lovely staff and even better food,took our dogs on a recommendation and definitely not disappointed, reasonably priced as well. Highly recommended.

Five of us enjoyed a fantastic Sunday roast at a very affordable price. The service was excellent from the family-run team, who provided a welcoming atmosphere despite being busy. We highly recommend this place.

Beatiful food very tasty, and my hip stand loved the pie with suet crust baked and crispy. My lasagne was really tasty but after te crab starter I took some home for lunch the next day. Very good glass of chardonnay and nice decaffeinated coffee...as well Speisekarte ansehen

last minute decision to eat table and the kitchen was closed when we arrived, but there was no problem, they were accommodating and there was never a hurry to finish our order or for us. the sign of a...big device. good was excellent frying dinner was super, crispy bratkartoffeln and fresh vegetables cooked to order. good beer, entertaining atmosphere and very welcoming. highly recommended.

When you opt to eat in the village pub when away for country weekend it can be a hit and miss affair. The Red Lion at Hognaston was defo a hit. Kept its old charm but in a good way with decor. Not overdone ...We had evening food and it was really good. Fresh, varied, cooked on premises not that bought in “pub food”. How very refreshing. Welcoming staff and great value. What’s not to like. Would definitely recommend

We called in for a sandwich and drink. The staff at the bar were not very friendly and we immediately felt like we were an inconvenience for being there. The atmosphere was frosty. It took nearly an hour and half to get two sandwiches and...a burger. The service we received made us feel like we weren’t welcome- a plate was snatched from my hands, we were told that they only had one person in the kitchen and people would have to wait for food when we hadn’t queried the wait times. We got the impression the owners didn’t really want to be there and were tired of being in the hospitality business. The Red Lion was the perfect place for a weekend gathering with friends. The warm greeting from the beginning set the tone for a friendly and enjoyable evening. The waitress was patient and helpful, especially with our indecisive group. All of our dishes were excellent, with the Scotch egg with curry sauce standing out as a highlight among the appetizers. The creamy parmesan mushrooms and Caesar salad were also fantastic. The steaks were cooked perfectly to order, my apple and mustard belly pork was divine, and my partner's fish and chips were delicious. Every plate was cleaned. The desserts were also excellent. We were surprised that there were so few diners, as the beer, food, and service...

We had booked a meal for New Year's Eve and were informed not to arrive until then as we would not be served before that time. However, we arrived a few minutes early and were told we had come at the right time as the restaurant was about to close. The drinks were good and reasonably priced. Unfortunately, two of our burgers were raw in the middle. Although we mentioned this, they had already been cut open and served on the plate. They offered to take them back to the kitchen to cook them more, but we declined as our other dishes were almost finished and we did not want reheated food. This is the fourth of our proposed regular Sunday lunch reviews for the Ashbourne area. The atmosphere and welcome was a bit lacking but that was largely because of the adverse weather conditions and I imagine would be lovely at other times. The food however...was first rate and excellent value at for a roast dinner of in our case beef and lamb, with half-a-chicken being a third option at the time of our visit. Both meats were very good and served with plenty of vegetables both in terms of variety and quantity, so if you're not an avid veg eater then it might be worth asking for a smaller serving to save waste!
