"We discovered Las Banderas when I took a drink break after doing 3/4 of a particular stretch of the Camino de La Plata. The tapas which we received with our drinks were so delicious we couldn't resist coming back for lunch. The other factor which attracted us was that this bar/restaurant situated in a corner of the very attractive town square opposite the church, Plaza Espana in Los Santos de Maimona was full of locals...always a good sign. We were not disappointed. The enthusiasm and passion that Manuel Gil, the young chef has for his craft is reflected in the quality, taste and presentation of the food. Unfortunately times are tough in this part of Spain and many young people from the village have gone to work in Germany leaving a depleted customer base for this wonderful restaurant. Anywhere else it would be full. We've been there twice now....the second time driving 80 k's from Almaden de la Plata. The food is Spanish but with a refinement that enhances rather than changes the original dishes. The foie made in house, our first course today, came with an apple marmalade which complimented it perfectly. My husband, Markus had the pork roulade stuffed with chestnuts in a wine/stock sauce a repeat from our previous visit. I ordered one of my favourite dishes which is no longer served in many restaurants....merluza in salsa verde. The salsa verde, which was a very superior version of the original green sauce, is a perfect companion to merluza. Markus even backed up for dessert.....a chocolate soufflé and an excellent Italian style coffee. Fernando, our waiter, the décor of the restaurant, the fresh warm bread and excellent wine made it worth the drive. And only 42 Euros for such great food"
