"On a recent holiday to Llangorse, we visited the Red Lion twice once for Sunday lunch and once on a Wednesday evening. We’d been looking forward to sampling the menu at the Red Lion since its relaunch and the food was exceptional. Sunday lunch was fantastic the meats were cooked beautifully alongside the huge homemade Yorkshire puddings and spring veg. My partner also commented that the hake was the best fish he had ever had. We almost didn’t have room for pudding (almost! but I’m glad we did as the raspberry pavlova was easily one of the nicest I’ve tasted. Equally, on the Wednesday, between us we went for the bavette steak and the chicken caesar salad and again, everything was delicious. I’d like to say that because of how much we enjoyed the food, we had a great experience at the Red Lion but unfortunately, the service and attitude of some of the staff when we dined there on the Wednesday evening really let us down. We were welcomed to our table by who we think was the chef with no issues. However, as the evening progressed, the service went downhill for us. The two waitresses who served us seemed like they didn’t really want to be there. When our order for mains was taken, we weren’t told that there was no hake on the menu, we only found out from a conversation overheard by my partner at the bar. Equally, the same happened on the Sunday when we weren’t told until we came to order our starters that some items weren’t available which should have been made known to us after we were seated. After our food arrived on the Wednesday, we were not asked by the waitress if we wanted any condiments or anything else they could get for us. When my partner approached the waitress to ask if those of us having steak could have a steak knife, he was told no as the steak should have been tender enough to cut it with a regular knife? We were quite taken aback by that response and despite what the waitress said, a steak knife was still required to cut our meat but at that point, we didn’t want to ask again so got on with our meals. We weren’t asked if everything was ok with our meal until our plates were cleared again, we expected someone to ask this earlier to check everything was ok. We waited a considerable time to be asked if we wanted dessert. We were also confused as we were told at the start of both meals that drinks could only be ordered at the bar, however, when our plates from our mains were being collected, we were told we could order them at the table which was inconsistent to what we’d previously been told. When we told the waitress we did want a dessert, menus were brought out but the waitress didn’t return. A second waitress then appeared and abruptly and rudely asked how many of us were having desserts so she could place the cutlery. There wouldn’t have been any issue at all with this being asked other than the way the waitress spoke or rather shouted at us. The whole party were surprised at her tone of voice to the point where we were almost lost for words. When the same waitress realised we hadn’t actually ordered dessert as the other waitress hadn’t come back to take our order, the waitress did apologise, but then went and sat on the window sill cross legged and asked for our order which we found to be a bit strange and unprofessional. We were also short of one set of dessert cutlery which was then pulled out of the top of the waitress’ dungarees. At that stage, we considered cancelling dessert and paying the bill, however, we persevered and the desserts (biscoff cheesecake and the raspberry pavlova were once again divine. We hope that the issues we have encountered are just teething problems due to it being a new establishment as the service we have received at other local pubs in the area has been second to none whereas in all honesty, we were not made to feel welcome on either occasion we visited the Red Lion. For the price of food and drink here, we would expect more from the level of service and hope this has been rectified at our next visit in 2024."

"My wife and I dropped in at lunch on the off chance. I was initially concerned as they had a sign saying no service outside due to staff shortages but we decided to sit inside and give it a go. The barman was helpful and served a really good pint! I ordered a rump steak and my wife ordered a veggie lasagne. My steak was perfectly cooked, extremely tender and full of flavour. The chips were crispy outside, fluffy inside and not a trace of grease. The lasagne was nice and cheesy and moist, not a dried up offering you often get. Well done the White Hart despite the staffing challenges. We won’t hesitate in returning when next in the area."

"I agree with the previous article that the Royal Oak is a beautiful place to be next to the canal on a sunny day. My wife and I were pleased to have their sweet potato, chickpeas and spinach curry was vegan and we both ordered this. However, I think the cook has forgotten the spices because to say that this is a blande an understatement. The texture was thin and very tomato flavor there were indeed a few lumps of sweet potatoes, a few chickpeas and a little spinach, but little curry aroma. As a soup it would have been good and we would like to have paid £6.00 for it with some nice bread, but as a curry it was disappointing and surely overpriced. We overheard a lady on the next table, offer the same feelings about this curry, so we know it wasn't just our opinion. Update: We went this year (2021) in the hope that the vegan cuisine had improved, it is a beautiful environment, but was said that the falafel burger was not vegan as it had milk in it. My wife used for the sweet potato, chickpeas and spinach curry again and it was much better from our previous visit, but instead of bread it came with a nan that was not vegan and the salad was covered in a non vegan dressing. "I booked this pub a couple of weeks prior to the date I wanted to go and spoke to a very helpful staff member who advised that as long as we could arrive by 3pm and leave by 4.30, we could be accommodated. My friend and I managed to arrive earlier than anticipated and were seated straight away, then had our drinks and food orders taken by a lovely lady. We both ordered garlic mushrooms, followed by roast lamb. Mushrooms served with garlic bread delicious. Roast lamb served with ample gravy, roast potatoes and at our request a Yorkshire pudding. There was also a large dish of assorted vegetables and another one with new potatoes. We suggested they take the potatoes back straight away as we knew we wouldn’t eat it all! The roast dinner was absolutely delicious in every way, proper home cooking and beautifully served. The lamb was tender and plentiful. With no room for desert, we asked for a portion of apple pie and custard to take away. That was equally delicious. This is a no frills pub, the appearance of which belies the treats it bestows on customers. Being a stranger to the area looking for somewhere to go for Sunday lunch, I selected this place based on the location near Brecon canal basin and the reviews. We were not disappointed. Staff are pleasant and welcoming and the food excellent value for money. If I visited the area again I would have no hesitation in returning. Thank you."

"...by providing great before- or after-eats and drinks. It was take-away only when we visited today due to Covid restrictions. However, restrictions or not, it would be difficult to find a better egg and bacon sarnie within miles! And when we returned later for tea and scones, it was all equally as good. Our server Jasmine was a left-handed delight; friendly, light-hearted and efficient which are qualities sometimes sadly lacking from customer service these days. The adjacent shop was also well-stocked and featured the same helpful and smiley service. Well done and thank you for adding to our day's enjoyment."
