"Yesterday 11th June 2023 myself, daughter, son in law and two grandchildren travelled to Bristol from Bridgwater to see The Lion King at the Bristol Hippodrome. We decided to arrive early so that we could all have lunch before going to see the show. We googled places to eat close to the theatre and The Hatchet came up as the oldest in Bristol and did food. Couldn't be happier with the choice. Not only was it a quirky looking pub from the outside, inside was well designed and comfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. My youngest grandson (10 years old) loves beef so he had the roast beef carvery. He's pretty fussy and very vocal if he thinks the meat is tough or tasteless but he was very pleased with his dinner. He said it was the best place he'd had beef and that it was delicious. I can agree as I had the carvery with roast lamb and a small piece of beef and can honestly say it was one of the best carvery's I have had in a while. My daughter and son in law agreed. Plates were piled high and we were thoroughly full. All plates cleared. The chef was very accommodating and plated up exactly what you asked for. The gravy was soooo good. My other grandson (12 years old) ordered the cheese burger. This looked amazing and was huge. The chips were double cooked and lovely. Nice side salad and loads of cheese (proper cheese). All in all we will return for food here. Pleasant surroundings, good food, great selection of drinks and very friendly staff. Just a note............... The pub is over 18's only most of the week, but on Sundays they have families in. This basically means there is no childrens menu and so meals are all the same size and same price. Good value for money though for a city. £11.99 for carvery and the cheeseburger was £10.99."

"I ate here with my three adult daughters and a friend when we couldn't get a table at TGI's across the shopping centre. I paid £7.95 for a single burger in a bun with the usual salad toppings. My 1st daughter paid £17.95 for double...burger (she didn't realise that was the standard), fries and a (bottomless) drink!! (although wasnt given a cup and had to go back and enquire where to get one). The restaurant was hot and noisy and lots of people were standing around the people who were eating at tables, waiting for their order number to be called. My number (for a single burger) took nearly 20 mins to be called. I found a table outside, as it was headache inducing inside. My burger was okay, but not particularly hot, the bun was squashed, but I was hungry and it was tasty enough. I had nearly finished by the time my next 2 daughters came out to the table, they had nearly finished when our final two came out. Fast food? It was certainly not. Value? NO, ridiculous prices for a mediocre meal. Not exactly a nice family meal either, as mine would have been stone cold if I had waited for them all to arrive at the table. My daughter described it as standing in a hot kitchen, watching the staff cook as you're waiting for your food!! There were lots of staff, all looked busy, but something is very wrong when you have to wait that long for fast food. We might as well have waited for a table at TGI's, and I can guarantee we would have spent less and enjoyed it more."

"Very interesting to read the last review as felt like our experience too. This is copied from my review in google: First off I will say that the food was excellent . It 's a bit confusing wether your are supposed to sit yourself or wait at the door etc, get your own menus or order at the bar? There 's a sign on the door saying #takeaway.... so we did thst but no one brought us a menu. After a while I noticed there were a few by the bar so my friend grabbed them and then at the bottom of the menu it does say order at the bar . We ordered the bigger of the two main breakfasts as it comes with black pudding. When the food came there was no vlack pudding and also tomatoes were missing. I politely asked the waitress if we could get some of each and she then informed us they had no black pudding so we asked for extra sausage I stead which she said we wouldn 't be able to do as Sausage is worth more than black pudding. (For the record, on the menu extra black pudding is £2 which is the same as Sausage). I pushed a little and said we had only ordered the bigger breakfast for the black pudding, we may as well not have paid the difference so she said she 'd ask. She did eventually bring us Sausage and tomatoes but didn 't say anything about it. Pretty bad they didn 't tell us when we ordered. No sign of sauce anywhere, we weren 't offered any amd no one asked us if our food was okay. We saw another table have to complain twice as well. It 's a shame as whoever is cooking is doing a really good job but the whole front of house system need to be re thought"
