The drinks were good, however, whilst waiting in the queue to order, the couple behind me came...up right beside me to peer into the food cabinets and I had to ask them to move away from me. they obviously thought it funny but why are people so stupid and unthinking. "The service upon arrival was pleasant and efficient. However, we received double the amount of popadoms we had ordered, which seemed odd. After waiting for an hour without any indication of when our food would arrive, we noticed that a table which arrived after us had already been served. It turned out that they were served first because they did not receive popadoms like we did. When we questioned this, we were told that the table had been served first because they did not have popadoms. This was the final straw for us, as waiting for over an hour in a restaurant without any explanation was unacceptable. Despite the waiter trying to downplay our wait time, another diner confirmed that we had indeed been waiting for over an hour. In the end, we decided to leave, as other diners also voiced their complaints about the long wait."

"Took 'Stake Ale Pie W/ Mash Potatoes, 'Ham Cheese Sandwich ', and two drinks (Tea Pepsi). The Stake Ale Pie wasn 't great due to being bland, no taste whatsoever. The Ham Cheese Sandwich tasted good. It 's not just on food they need to improve but on hygiene as well... The toilets were very filthy. The toilet, the floors and the sink were in awful condition. Wouldn 't come back here again unfortunately, expected more from a Pub in such a touristic area."

"The menu is'nt enormous as you would find in most take aways but there's a decent choice. I ordered the crispy chicken in sweet and sour sauce. The sauce was far too spicy for my partners liking and she couldn't eat it all. I found it very hot too. I'd suggest that they put a warning on the intensity unless this dish came out different to what you would normally do. The beef, chicken and prawn fried rice could have done with the meat fried with the rice, it looked like they were cooked separately and just thrown in at the end. Prawn crackers were amazing, very nice and very fresh, the best I've ever had! The chips were delicious, nicely cooked and not the usual Chinese style chip. The curry sauce was also different to what I'm used to, a huge tray which I wasn't expecting but really tasty. I was quite disappointed with the special fried rice portion, roughly ¾ full and at the price £6.95, I would have expected a full tray. It was obvious that the place was busy with orders and there were mistakes, both in the waiting time for my food and the overcharging (I always rate my experiences on the food quality, not waiting which is lucky for you guys! Apologies were made and mistakes were quickly dealt with in a very honourable way. Considering this place is a bistro, they do a great job cooking Chinese cuisine, probably not what I'm use to but definitely worth a cruise through their menu and also other theme nights such as Mexican, Spanish tapas and pizza. I did read the reviews before I chose to order and really have to make it clear that these reviews are spot on! I cannot wait to visit again and try other dishes. This is a pet friendly bistro, I didn't know or else I'd have booked a table."

"Excellent food and service. We came on Saturday afternoon and when we arrived the pub was nearly full but the young man on the door squeezed us in, he asked to wait whilst they cleaned and re set a table . We were informed that despite it being busy there maybe up to at 40 minute wait for food once ordered we didn’t mind as it’s what you would expect from a busy town centre pub on a Saturday afternoon. My wife and 1 both ordered the pie, mine with mash and my wife’s with chips, both came with gravy and crushed peas. The pies are a proper pie filled with tender pieces of beef and quite honestly Devine! Our friends had a beer battered fish and chips which was a good size portion and the cheeseburger which they could only describe as delicious. We had 2 pints of Bombardier beer, an Asahi and a draught coke. Special shout out to our server I think his name was Manny very polite and helpful young man. When we were leaving the manager said goodbye and said he looked forward to welcoming us again. A lovely big pub in the heart of town, busy but with helpful staff and would absolutely return again. Keep up the good work"

"What a lovely little tearoom. Friendly staff and lovely food. We went in Saturday and I had the red pepper and goat cheese quiche.. delicious . We went back in today and I had a three cheese and mushroom quiche . This was even tastier. It's a large portion, with salad, coleslaw and lovely thick bread. Excellent value for money too!"

"Visited on the recommendation of a friend so decided to try it rather than our usual eatery in Matlock. It was ok, food was tasty (we all had ciabatta’s) but randomly my salad garnish was half the size of everyone else’s. No big deal but it looked like it had come out unfinished. The table next to us had a ploughman’s platter and afternoon tea which looked delicious. The crockery was stained (the first cup the server gave us was filthy and she quickly exchanged it) and the cutlery had leftover food bits on it so we had to give it a good wipe over with napkins before using it. The place itself needs a spring clean, the ceiling lighting has big cobwebs hanging from it. The cafe was busy and the staff looked run off their feet but the young girl who took my order wasn’t very friendly didn’t get service with a smile that’s for sure. Minor niggles but all added up didn’t give a great impression. Would we return….probably not."

"Horendous ! Made to feel very uncomfortable because we had children! IWe visited Jack Rabbits today as a group of 4 mums with our 5 children 4, 2 year olds and 1 , 4 year old. The children were being extremely well behaved, of course chatting away to each other however there was no screaming or shouting from any of them. The waitress ,Jane , felt the need to say to one us that our children needed to be kept quiet and that other customers couldn't hear themselves talk. We were shocked by this but ofcoruse wanting everyone to enjoy their lunch we made sure the children stayed in their seats and begrudgingly let them watch our phones as we now felt they must be silent extremely sad as they were all enjoying socialising with the other children and this made us feel really uncomfortable. Unfortunately with the children now silent and settled it didn't stop here. Jane again felt the need to quickly clear our table, taking drinks that we were not finished with and a full pot of tea this was returned when asked for. One of the children then got out of his seat and walked over to an empty table and stood behind a chair, Jane again felt the need to stand, stare at him, tutted and muttered under her breath. At this point we asked Jane if their was another probem, she stated again that customers couldn't hear themselves talk , we repeated that our children were now not even talking to each other and were actually silent, making the customers in the cafe more noisy than them. She said she couldn't understand why we had taken offense which is a concern in itself and said we should have bought something to entertain the children with and went on to inform us that her children and her grandchildren would certainly never behave like this. The conversation continued and we were made to feel that uncomfortable we left! Extremely disappointing from what we thought would be a family friendly and child friendly Cafe. Unfortunately other customers felt the need to ask if we were OK and were obviously shocked by the waitresses actions. We will certainly never be returning and would highly recommend other people with young children do not go here. I would like to add that the young waitress on shift was apologetic and very polite! She was a pleasure and a lovely staff member."

"We visited this place after a lovely walk through chatsworth park, and what a wonderful place! The management have truly made this a wonderful venue with superb decoration and furnishings. We had booked the autumn afternoon tea and it was absolutely delightful! The little soup cup was delicious to start and the sandwiches were soft and fresh. Following this we had scones and other little seasonal cakes (we had to take some home, which were kindly boxed up), all delicious. Our server Becky was brilliant and we felt really looked after, and the young lady who was the barista Queen (Holly) was also making sure we had plenty of tea. We will definitely be back as we live very local and would highly recommend to all."

"I reserved a table for my husband and myself, as i was celebrating my birthday on the past 29th.December 2023. I wanted to eat somwhere special where i thought the food would be good. My husband and i had been previously invited by my cousin and her husband to the Wheatsheaf for lunch last September 2023. It was a saturday and the Wheatsheaf was packed. I think it might have been a bank holiday weekend. We could not get a table, but were told we might get some seats close to the bar, and we would have to order the food ourselves, which we did. We were amazed at how quickly we got our food and it was excellent !!! My husband is difficult to cater for as he has food allergies. I had a ribeye steak cooked to perfection medium rare and my husband had sirloin steak cooked to perfection very well done . My husband even congratulated the chef. I was really looking forward to my birthday evening meal, but to my dismay, it wasn't to be. We were taken to a table with no lighting, so i could not read the menu properly. We were quickly moved to a better table after asking. Another two couples came in after us and both got served quickly and they left before us. We were still waiting for an hour to be served, and it wasn't even busy !!! When it finally came, my meal was almost cold sirloin steak with king prawns in batter . I admit the prawns were nice as they were hot.I had to send the steak and chips back to be warmed up, but when it came back the sirloin steak was chewy and i did not enjoy it at all. I was not even asked how i would like my steak. We both noticed that the floor was dirty with spilt food and a table that had not been cleared up. Waiters just walked over it and ignored the table. My birthday was marred by this experience. Before all this, i was even thinking about coming back again to try something else on the menu, but i don't think i will be doing now. We were given a 20% discount as an apology for the wait, but it did not make up for the bad service and the quality of my meal."

"I visited with 4 friends tonight to try the chinese Menu . We all ordered at the same time . After 45 minutesThe first meal arrived which was wrong but my friend ate it anyway as was hungry. The 2nd meal came out 15 minutes later. The last 2 meals arrived 20 minutes later after asking twice . It would have been nice to all actually eat together . The lad behind the bar was very apologetic and said the delays were because of the amount of take away orders they had . Surely customers sat in the pub waiting should take priority . When the food arrived it was actually really nice . I think its also very cheeky to charge £3 each to eat in from the chinese menu ."

"beautiful location. beautifully maintained park, with bowling green, croquetted grass, a lake and a quite comprehensive children's playground. Although it was previously free to park, it is just £1.00 for four hours, which is brilliant worth! the cafeteria seems to have changed the hands since we were there, lastly, they have moved theke to the opposite end and there is no more table service. So I had to do with a fair number of rammblers, who all came for coffee and cake, which was a bit painful. the espresso machine was broken, which was unfortunately, but the filter coffees were very good. the homemade ham in the ham and cheese toasties was beautiful. we did not think that the caffe had the same atmosphere as before; the previous incarnation seemed more family-friendly, selling ice creams etc. it is located in a beautiful building, but with magnificent view over the park."

"Disappointed in the homemade pie. The crust was to hard to cut, it just shattered. The amount of mash and peas one small dollop of each) did not last the pie so you were eating just pie. Chicken and mushroom nothing special for home made pie , had better from pie shops. Well over priced. Complained, just told well it's a home made pie!!! No discount or apology. "Where to start … we stumbled across this place when looking for breakfast on our first morning. Thrilled to find that it was also dog friendly in the lounge and bar area we had a really nice breakfast fruit juice, tea, cooked breakfast etc. That was lovely. Staff very attentive, brought our dog a water bowl and offered to get him some treats. The hotel seems to have been recently refurbished judging by the pictures on Trip Advisor which aren’t of the current decor it is done to a beautiful standard now. We enjoyed our breakfast so much we ate breakfast there three out of the four mornings we were in Bakewell. We also returned one evening for dinner. We had some lovely drinks in the lounge area to start the barman makes a lovely pornstar martini which is my favourite. Our dog was welcome in the bar area and there was a good atmosphere in the room and it was entertaining watching all the cocktails being made. We had some lovely food including seared tuna, ham hock, burger and lemon posset to finish (I would have happily eaten almost all of the puddings! . Overall this place was great. You really aren’t spoilt for choice on great places to eat in Bakewell, certainly not to this standard. If I was having my time again I’d of booked for dinner here at least another time. Thoroughly recommend it. Thank you."

"I was passing through and decided to stop at this cafe having visited several times before. It was full of customers patiently waiting for drinks and enjoying the delicious treats on offer. I found one free table and decided to help the staff out by...clearing the table. When I asked where I could leave the dirty dishes, I got a rather loud and terse reply from a barista to take them back to the table and wait. Several people around me raised their eyebrows at this. I was only trying to help them. The same person then announced, which was heard by all, that she wasn't enjoying this'. At no point were any of the customers giving her grief or being impatient. I would have thought that this cafe would be thrilled that they were busy at a very challenging time for small businesses."

"We like to try different pubs in the Peak District for Sunday lunch and I have to say that The George came pretty high up the list today. I can quite honestly say that although we've eaten in many places in Tideswell, we've never tried...The George, but seeing good reviews on TA, we thought we'd try it. I had the Turkey roast and the OH had the chicken, leek and bacon pie. There were 5 veg, plus mash and a superb Yorkshire pudding that must have just come out of the oven. We shared a crumble, which, again, was excellent (made with brown sugar and butter! It was all very reasonable and the staff were attentive. However, just one point to mention, we were cold, as were other people please next time we come, have the heating on and light the fires it makes such a difference!!"

"We had a long walk with our Lab and wanted an outdoor quick bite meal so opted for Pizza as we'd been here a few years ago and it was nice, not this time. We ordered a LARGE Margarita pizza and wanted a water (didn't have any) and a coffee (machine wasn't working) not great had to go to another shop. The large pizza was not as described it was more like a child's pizza as you can see in the picture the size of my average hand spread, with hardly any topping. Disappointed is an understatement. Owner sat on his laptop by the door, didn't even raise his head to say hello. We won't go here again, we'd advise anyone asking to eat elsewhere, both wished we'd gone to the Red Lion instead, next time we will."

"We were visiting a few churches in the area with a group of 10 friends and we had booked into The Gate for lunch. What a warm welcome we received. The fire was burning brightly in the grate, the brasses were gleaming and the tables were all invitingly laid out ready for our meal. The menu had lots of choice but most of us were enticed by the pie menu, steak Stilton being the most popular with game pie and chicken leek also chosen. The servings were so generous that only a few of us had room for afters but these also looked delicious . A good selection of real ales too. Excellent service and ambiance. Would thoroughly recommend. Thank you for memorable visit."

"Me and my wife like to try different restaurants and cafeterias when out walking and today we stumbled upon this little gem. First of all the service from the European girl who served us our hot drinks was fantastic, she was A1 friendly. The food came within 15 minutes and was very well presented and exactly as we ordered as we did not want all the items listed. The vegetarian breakfast was beautifully presented and was probably the best we have had in the Peak District for a while. Highly recommended. 5 stars. Would recommend it to our walker friends and will be calling again in the future."
