"Unbothered, unapologetic and unacceptable. This morning me, my partner and our friend went to go and have breakfast. We live just over the road and used to go to the butlers bell a lot when it was the Wetherspoons but haven’t been in much since it changed to Davenport’s. I arrived at 10:40am, found a table and we placed our order around 10:50am. Initially, I was concerned by the service (or lack of). The bartender, who we later discovered was a manager, input the order wrong a number of times and had to be corrected on several occasions before getting it correct. They then haphazardly splashed some orange juice in a glass and slammed it down on the side spilling it around the glass. We weren’t off to a great start but we went and waited for our food. 30 minutes later and the food hadn’t arrived so I went inside just to ask how long the wait time was. I was met with “the kitchen did say it was a 30 minute wait”, new information to me but I was reassured they would go and check where it was. 20 minutes later the food finally arrived… or some of it did. One of the meals was completely missing and we were told it had mistakenly been taken to another table. When the two of us who had meals looked at the plate we were missing a number of items from the advertised breakfasts. Eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms. There was very little attempt at an apology with just one of the members of staff claiming responsibility for the mixup but nothing further from the “manager”. We were told the other breakfast would be out in 5 mins so we waited… 10-15 mins passed and nothing had come so we decided we would leave and get a refund. Nobody checked if the food was okay or if there were any issues so I had to explain to the “manager” who was signed in on the till system as ‘Jacob’ but I’m assuming this wasn’t their login given the complete lack of apology or professionalism. I explained we had missing items and one breakfast which never arrived after being there for an hour so I wanted a refund for the breakfasts. I was told that because we’d accepted the other two breakfasts they would not refund them but only the one which didn’t arrive and that it was not possible for them to refund the other two. I was then handed cash from the till in the total of about £11, slightly more than the cost of one breakfast. I explained that I had paid on card and wanted the refund on the same method of payment, again I was told this just wasn’t possible for them to do. First time going there to eat since it changed hands and it will definitely be the last. Poor service, poor quality food and generally a total lack of care or compassion for the customer."

"We stayed for two nights Fri/Sat and Sat/Sun in the Hotel part and also had our breakfasts there each morning, AND an evening meal Saturday . 1. a The house itself: Undoubtedly a very old building which provides a great ambience, full of character. This includes the wonderful low ceilings with wooden beams. The house lived up to our expectations from the six hundred ? year old building, as did the rooms. b The room we stayed in: We stayed in room 22 and it was a much quieter room than any that we had in many more modern hotels. Whilst neither ceiling, walls nor floor was square and level purely due to the age of the building, a superb shower and very comfortable bed with clean linen more than made up for it. We had a good sleep at night and great shower in the morning. 2 Food: a Breakfasts: There is no laid out buffet, instead orders are taken individually which is perfectly fine. But here is where it was slightly tricky to rate: On Saturday morning, it took well over 1 hour if not 1.5 hours for the two cooked breakfasts to arrive, despite only one table of four having ordered ahead of us. Saying that, the host was very apologetic and when the breakfast finally did arrive, it was superb! On Sunday morning breakfast only starts at 0900hrs , the breakfast still took about 45 minutes to arrive, but when it did, it was the wrong order. The member of staff, again, was very apologetic and after another 15 minutes, the correct order arrived. It tasted somewhat more greasy, having been differently cooked not part grilled to the one from Saturday both mornings, I made the same order . This was a slight pity, but we were hungry. Dinner: The dinner on Saturday 1700hrs , in contrast to breakfast, was both efficiently served and tasted excellent. The availability of grilled options added to the excellent taste. We were a party of three and the manager was kind enough to reserve a table for us. Definitely recommend dinner: Great taste and reasonably priced. 3. Staff: Great. Very friendly and helpful; they all tried their best to make up for any shortfall at both breakfasts. Could not do enough to make the stay pleasant. 4. Conclusion: I think, the Vine should definitely be advertised as The oldest Inn in Stafford , providing good accommodation and hearty meals to the traveller. It has great ambience; indeed a privilege to stay in such an old building. We would definitely wish to return but would not wish to wait so long for breakfast. Overall, a great place, centrally located and, again, providing good accommodation and hearty meals. Still got 5 stars as we did enjoy our stay."
