"Positives first. The hotel and grounds are stunning. But…… what has happened to the standards of food and service. I made a lunch reservation for two friends and myself as a special treat which we had been looking forward to for some time. On arrival, I would have expected to be shown to the table, but instead we were handed menus and pointed in the direction of a table at the end. This was laid up for 4 people so I had to check with the waiter this was the correct table. If I book for three then I expect the table to be laid for three and not have to start moving furniture and table settings. We ordered drinks and our food. Drinks arrived and some water. At no point during our meal did the waiter offer to pour the water or drinks for us. The food arrived after an extremely long wait and was a complete let down. My fish and chips were almost indelible. Chips OK but the batter on the fish was rock hard and almost impossible to cut into. There was very little fish inside the batter. I have no idea what went wrong with the mushy peas – they were anaemic and a very strange texture. £24 was a ridiculous price for something which wasn’t tasty or enjoyable. My friend had the chicken club sandwich which arrived with cold toasted bread. The sandwich was not advertised as toasted and she had great difficulty biting into the tough texture. Something else I noticed was the odd choice of crockery. The mains were served on modern plates but the side plates were floral china. Incidentally the mis-matched side plates were not used, so no idea why they were there. Bottom line is that the lunch we had been looking forward to was overpriced and a massive disappointment . Not what we expected from a 5 star hotel. The kitchen needs a shake up and waiting staff need more training. Management need to ensure standards live up to the high prices."

"visited with my wife on a Saturday night. I have booked a table about their website that was easy to do and received the confirmation quickly. first impression. we went in and were immediately greeted by the staff and sitting immediately, the restaurant is very small maybe 6 tables in the front room (not see the rear room) and 1 chef. the decor is simple but pleasant with quiet music in the background. the menu had a great variety, especially as there is only one cook. this has not, however, influenced the time it took to bring out our food. I ordered the prawn cocktail. that was massive! this was by far the largest brantee cocktail I've ever met, it was also very tasty, with a good mix or garnel, salad and sauce. if something is too big for a beginner. for the net we ordered the surf and turf and lamb shank. the filetsteak was ordered medium rare and came out to perfection with a very large garnish cooked up. the lamb was delicious, the meat just fell from the bone, eating everything was very well presented to a real creditworthiness for the chef. to dessert we decided to simply share some ice cream that is all made in the house. again it was delicious and I would visit again only for the ice garden! inexpensive I feel that £75 is a little expensive for 1 starter, 2 netzen, 1 dessert and a few drinks, but served for the quality and quantity I would pay happy again. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to everyone, I will definitely visit again! many thanks for a wonderful meal."

"I think I was pampered in the country because I had not only some of the best Italian foods I had outside italian, but also had two of the best restaurant experiences I had in my whole life, at the top, from any kind of restaurant. if they find such an Italian restaurant, they want to go back, but unfortunately is berlin or hown a long way to go only for Saturday dinner! fast forward to a small trip to the west, and we found ourselves next to the beautiful city tewkesbury so booked salerno based on the great reviews. as even semi-Italian, I will always be very critical of Italian eating, but I must admit that all dishes were eaten very nice. we had a caprese and antipasti for 1 for beginners followed by a margherita pizza and rigatoni salmone for net, all very tasty, decent portions and well cooked. the affogato finished my meal beautifully. all this was washed with a beautiful bottle lo zoccolaio barolo, which at £46 was a fairer price for a premium wine. so good. I assume that the restaurant was full and busy, and there are Covid considerations, but my part came from the service experience. While it is clearly a popular local restaurant and has a good call when I go to an Italian restaurant, they always take on the fact that I am Italian, the obvious giveaway is my name when I reserve the table and when I arrive there first. I also expect a dedicated service in any restaurant so that I feel loved and how I can banish a bit. and finally, as it is so typical for an independent Mediterranean restaurant, the fun part comes when they offer them a free shot of something, be it limoncello, ouzo or grappa! Finally, it is the little thank you that openly costs a business maximum 50-60p, but will faithful and happy customers each time. Even a few dishes of espresso would suffice that again would cost about 20-30p! it is for me to say a business as they should run, but the times are hard for every business, and it is these tiny little touches that differentiate a business for me, and frankly, these are touches that could be integrated into the menu prices anyway, just add 25p to any court and nobody would even notice! honestly, the service was cold, not especially attentive and open just. they have not done anything wrong, and I still give a 4/5, because the food wine was great and the atmosphere was beautiful because the place was full, but it still extinguishes me as a great family service, what it is about Italian restaurants, and if they don't have it, they can also be a müll pizza. would I recommend eating here...absolutely! would I recommend eating here or would I return...sadly no!"

"Booked online and arrived 5 minutes early, the restaurant smelled a bit strange and we noticed as soon as we walked in. I requested on the booking to sit in restaurant but we were shown to a table one away from the bar. I said we requested restaurant and was ignored as the guy walked away. Waiter came over a few minutes later and looked very stressed. We gave our order and were asked if we wanted pigs in blankets which used to be £1.99. We said yes please and then waiter advised they were £3.99. We just said ok and went up to get our food there wasn’t much of a queue for a change and I got my meat, good selection of potatoes and veg. Hubby wasn’t impressed with amount of meat as only had two slices of meat cut very thinly. He doesn’t like cabbage or sprouts so all he could have by way of veg was carrots and peas. There was no broccoli, swede, leeks, red cabbage, sweetcorn or parsnips. We both had gravy but it didn’t have much taste and was quite thin which made my mash turn into a paste. My husband finished his meal and there was no sign of the pigs in blankets, I asked the waiter to cancel them and they said they had just asked the kitchen, I replied we don’t want them as we’ve nearly finished our meal. The tables were quite close and the lady on the next table was quite large so each time she sat down or got up we had her rear end in our faces. (Not her fault obviously the tables are too close together). As I was finished the waiter advised they had taken the pigs in blankets off the bill. The waiter was rushing around clearing tables, taking orders, doing deserts, starters and drinks so we couldn’t get their attention for a desert so decided to just pay and leave. At £14.79 per meal we weren’t happy with the amount of meat and lack of taste in the gravy. Very disappointing and for that price we expected more. Quality has definitely gone down although prices have gone up"

"Very poor experience, lady who seemed to be in charge was very rude and very abrasive. As a family of 9 we had arranged to meet here, off Junction 9, on our travels at 11 am. I did ring earlier in the week to check we could just call in for drinks and may well stay for lunch, once that service resumed at 12 noon. We all felt as if we were unwelcome as soon as we arrived because we hadn’t booked, even though there didn’t seem to be hardly anyone else there! We were bundled into corner of the bar, even with a new born baby. We were eventually allowed to move to a table, near to the soft play, as requested, after I again spoke to the lady at the bar, but she still wasn’t very friendly. On purchasing drinks, again she said don’t tell me the individual drinks you want, just tell me how many hot drinks as they’re all the same price, well I’m sorry but that’s not how you speak to a customer. I had no idea about the way you purchase hot drinks there! We did stay and 4 of us ordered food, which took an hour, I did ask the waiter if he could find out how long it might be, he came back and said the cook couldn’t tell him how long, so he had no answer for us!!! Again whilst ordering the food at the bar, the original lady was very abrasive, especially when my card transaction wasn’t going through very quickly, saying it was my card and I was using a non contactless card, which just wasn’t true. Surely a bit of politeness wouldn’t go a miss. We had a newborn baby with us and a 7 year old, it was the worst day for floods in all surrounding areas, so quite stressful traveling. We couldn’t have got into Tewkesbury to Wetherspoons to meet for lunch, or any other cafe, as all roads into the town were flooded. One would think on such a day with all this going on, a warm welcome would have been given to us as Elmbury Lodge. The venue itself is very nice, the soft play area was fairly good and the free top up on the hot drinks was good, but the food was very poor and the service and friendliness was totally unacceptable."

"Since moving to Bishops Cleeve* almost two years ago I have eaten here many times. Usually I have chosen the chicken nagga, because it is so good I've not felt inclined to try anything else. (Warning: although not a vindaloo it might be too hot for some tastes. Others who have accompanied me to the restaurant have not been as boring as I and have enjoyed a variety of other dishes. The last time I visited I thought I would, for a change, try the lamb madras. The sauce was very tasty but the meat was obviously lamb tikka. It was dry and had certainly not been cooked in the madras sauce. I recently had a take-away lamb jalfrezi from another local restaurant in which the meat was lamb tikka. Perhaps a source of inexpensive lamb tikka has recently become available and restaurants are taking advantage of this. Anyway, next time I shall return to the chicken nagga. Although, with this reservation, I would recommend the restaurant, customers should be prepared for poor service. The last time I visited, two customers were eating but no staff were present in the restaurant (although I could hear them chatting in the kitchen . I sat and waited. After approximately 10 minutes a member of staff appeared, apologised, and fetched me a menu. On a previous occasion my wife and I booked a table for 7pm. We arrived shortly before 7. The restaurant was busy, including several customers standing around waiting for take-aways. We waited over fifteen minutes for someone to show us to a table. There was no apology this time. It is a great pity the service does not match the food. *This restaurant is, incidentally in Bishops Cleeve, not Cheltenham."
