"We stayed at Ellenborough Park over the bank holiday weekend and I can only assume this was reflected in the room rate. Because we paid £450 per night for two nights, which would’ve been no problem if the experience was truly as described “a 5 star experience”. However the reality was far from it. The room was at best a 4 star with dirty net curtains, limescale on the taps, marks on the walls and blinds held together with cable ties!! The common areas were dirty, the carpets in particular were covered in crumbs throughout and there was just an overall lack of attention to detail. We headed to the spa which although small seemed to have a few nice facilities. However the jacuzzi looked dirty, with grouting missing, and tiles lying loose around the edge drawing attention to the fact that many were missing. We decided to visit the outdoor pool which was much worse. Again tiles missing at the entrance to the pool, with wet and soiled sun loungers and dirty plates left out. So we gave up. This left us little confidence in the dinner reservation we had booked for that evening so we cancelled it and ate out in Cheltenham instead. The breakfast was also an inelegant service with staff rushing around crashing plates and spilling tea over the table when it was served. We also witnessed a stomach churning exchange at breakfast where someone requested a replacement sausage (for an undercooked one) it was reluctantly brought out on a small plate and carelessly rolled onto the diner’s main plate for consumption. The reception staff were friendly and the exterior of the house and grounds are beautiful. The hotel has a lot of potential but unfortunately it overpromised and under delivered across the board. Had we paid closer to half of this amount, and the hotel rated appropriately as 4 stars I would not be writing this, but for £900 it was extremely poor overall and we feel ripped off. It goes without saying we will not be returning."

Salerno

"I think I have been spoilt abroad because in Berlin and Vienna, I not only had some of the best Italian food I've eaten outside of Italy, but I also had two of the best restaurant experiences I've had in my entire life, full-stop, out...of any kind of restaurant. When you find such an Italian restaurant, you want to go back, but sadly Berlin or Vienna is a long way to go just for Saturday dinner! Fast forward to a little getaway to the West Country, and we found ourselves next door to the pretty town of Tewkesbury so booked Salerno based on the great reviews. Being half-Italian myself, I am always going to be highly critical of Italian food, but I must admit that all the dishes eaten were very nice...we had a Caprese and Antipasti for 1 for starters followed by a Margherita pizza and Rigatoni Salmone for mains, all very tasty, decent portions and well cooked. The affogato finished my meal off nicely. This was all washed down with a lovely bottle of Lo Zoccolaio Barolo, which at £46 was a fair price for a premium wine. So far so good. Now, I accept that the restaurant was full and busy, and there are Covid concerns but my downside came from the service experience. While it is clearly a popular local restaurant and has a great reputation, whenever I go to an Italian restaurant they always pick up on the fact that I'm Italian, the obvious giveaway being my name when I reserved the table and when I first arrive there. I also expect engaging service at any restaurant, so that I feel loved and like I can have a bit of banter. And finally, as is so typical of an independent Mediterranean restaurant, the fun part comes when they offer you a free shot of something, whether it be limoncello, ouzo or grappa! Ultimately, it's the little thank you, that frankly costs a business around 50-60p at most, but gets loyalty and happy clients every time. Even a couple of shots of espresso would suffice which again would cost about 20-30p in total to the owners! Far be it for me to tell a business how they should run, but times are tough for any business, and it's these tiny little touches that differentiate a business for me, and frankly these are touches which could be integrated into the menu pricing anyway, just add 25p to each dish and nobody would even notice! Honestly, the service was cold, not especially attentive and frankly just disinterested...they didn't do anything wrong, and I'm still giving a 4/5 as the food wine was great and the atmosphere was nice because the place was full, but it still erks me overall as great family service is what Italian restaurants are all about, and if you don't have that, you may as well be a rubbish, soulless Prezzo or Pizza Express. Would I recommend the food here...absolutely! Would I recommend dining here or would I return myself...sadly no!"

"Very poor experience, lady who seemed to be in charge was very rude and very abrasive. As a family of 9 we had arranged to meet here, off Junction 9, on our travels at 11 am. I did ring earlier in the week to check we could just call in for drinks and may well stay for lunch, once that service resumed at 12 noon. We all felt as if we were unwelcome as soon as we arrived because we hadn’t booked, even though there didn’t seem to be hardly anyone else there! We were bundled into corner of the bar, even with a new born baby. We were eventually allowed to move to a table, near to the soft play, as requested, after I again spoke to the lady at the bar, but she still wasn’t very friendly. On purchasing drinks, again she said don’t tell me the individual drinks you want, just tell me how many hot drinks as they’re all the same price, well I’m sorry but that’s not how you speak to a customer. I had no idea about the way you purchase hot drinks there! We did stay and 4 of us ordered food, which took an hour, I did ask the waiter if he could find out how long it might be, he came back and said the cook couldn’t tell him how long, so he had no answer for us!!! Again whilst ordering the food at the bar, the original lady was very abrasive, especially when my card transaction wasn’t going through very quickly, saying it was my card and I was using a non contactless card, which just wasn’t true. Surely a bit of politeness wouldn’t go a miss. We had a newborn baby with us and a 7 year old, it was the worst day for floods in all surrounding areas, so quite stressful traveling. We couldn’t have got into Tewkesbury to Wetherspoons to meet for lunch, or any other cafe, as all roads into the town were flooded. One would think on such a day with all this going on, a warm welcome would have been given to us as Elmbury Lodge. The venue itself is very nice, the soft play area was fairly good and the free top up on the hot drinks was good, but the food was very poor and the service and friendliness was totally unacceptable."

"Since moving to Bishops Cleeve* almost two years ago I have eaten here many times. Usually I have chosen the chicken nagga, because it is so good I've not felt inclined to try anything else. (Warning: although not a vindaloo it might be too hot for some tastes. Others who have accompanied me to the restaurant have not been as boring as I and have enjoyed a variety of other dishes. The last time I visited I thought I would, for a change, try the lamb madras. The sauce was very tasty but the meat was obviously lamb tikka. It was dry and had certainly not been cooked in the madras sauce. I recently had a take-away lamb jalfrezi from another local restaurant in which the meat was lamb tikka. Perhaps a source of inexpensive lamb tikka has recently become available and restaurants are taking advantage of this. Anyway, next time I shall return to the chicken nagga. Although, with this reservation, I would recommend the restaurant, customers should be prepared for poor service. The last time I visited, two customers were eating but no staff were present in the restaurant (although I could hear them chatting in the kitchen . I sat and waited. After approximately 10 minutes a member of staff appeared, apologised, and fetched me a menu. On a previous occasion my wife and I booked a table for 7pm. We arrived shortly before 7. The restaurant was busy, including several customers standing around waiting for take-aways. We waited over fifteen minutes for someone to show us to a table. There was no apology this time. It is a great pity the service does not match the food. *This restaurant is, incidentally in Bishops Cleeve, not Cheltenham."
