"I think I was pampered in the country because I had not only some of the best Italian foods I had outside italian, but also had two of the best restaurant experiences I had in my whole life, at the top, from any kind of restaurant. if they find such an Italian restaurant, they want to go back, but unfortunately is berlin or hown a long way to go only for Saturday dinner! fast forward to a small trip to the west, and we found ourselves next to the beautiful city tewkesbury so booked salerno based on the great reviews. as even semi-Italian, I will always be very critical of Italian eating, but I must admit that all dishes were eaten very nice. we had a caprese and antipasti for 1 for beginners followed by a margherita pizza and rigatoni salmone for net, all very tasty, decent portions and well cooked. the affogato finished my meal beautifully. all this was washed with a beautiful bottle lo zoccolaio barolo, which at £46 was a fairer price for a premium wine. so good. I assume that the restaurant was full and busy, and there are Covid considerations, but my part came from the service experience. While it is clearly a popular local restaurant and has a good call when I go to an Italian restaurant, they always take on the fact that I am Italian, the obvious giveaway is my name when I reserve the table and when I arrive there first. I also expect a dedicated service in any restaurant so that I feel loved and how I can banish a bit. and finally, as it is so typical for an independent Mediterranean restaurant, the fun part comes when they offer them a free shot of something, be it limoncello, ouzo or grappa! Finally, it is the little thank you that openly costs a business maximum 50-60p, but will faithful and happy customers each time. Even a few dishes of espresso would suffice that again would cost about 20-30p! it is for me to say a business as they should run, but the times are hard for every business, and it is these tiny little touches that differentiate a business for me, and frankly, these are touches that could be integrated into the menu prices anyway, just add 25p to any court and nobody would even notice! honestly, the service was cold, not especially attentive and open just. they have not done anything wrong, and I still give a 4/5, because the food wine was great and the atmosphere was beautiful because the place was full, but it still extinguishes me as a great family service, what it is about Italian restaurants, and if they don't have it, they can also be a müll pizza. would I recommend eating here...absolutely! would I recommend eating here or would I return...sadly no!"

"After having had an operation on my face and not feeling my best I decided to go to have my dinner at the Old Elm. I have been there before on many occasions and in general the food was okay although far from perfect. I have had incidents in the past where some of the staff have been rude to me and at 7pm one Monday night when I had walked some distance to eat there was not greeted with 'Good Evening ' or even ' Hello ' but just ' The kitchen is closed... we have run out of food! ' When I said I had walked for 40 minutes was told by Dan the barman... What do you want me to do, carry you home on my back?! I have heard other people complain that he has been rude to them also. Tonight though, the 23rd June I was made to feel like I was in the way because it was their Quiz Night. Finally I did have a table for 1 and just had a small meal but behind me there were 3 couples dining and there was some unrest going on with raised voices as they were told at 8.45pm that they could not have any dessert because they had nothing left! Then the one barman I believe his name is Scott) was called and he sarcastically said to them when they reminded him that they should serve food until 9pm, What do you want me to do, magic food up out of nowhere?! They then asked for the Manager and I told them he was the owner he took a very long time to come and then proceeded to argue with the customers in a very rude and aggressive manner. Only the 7 of us in the room so not a huge amount of witnesses to his awful behaviour. I actually decided to tell him that his staff member was VERY rude to those customers and he then turned on me... pointing a pen in my face and said very nastily Have you paid your bill? Don 't ever come back! I told him not to point his pen in my face! He then said Pay the bill and leave or just leave and I will pay your bill ... an extremely nasty egotistical piece of work with zero manners! Matt is his name and just because he owns the pub he thinks that it is okay to treat people like dirt! I have struggled anyway sometimes with dirty tables, caked on food from the previous diners, filthy chairs, the staining is beyond belief and have mentioned it several times but been told that they can do nothing.... actually they don 't care! Most of the staff think it is okay to stand around gossiping at the bar when people want to pay their bill or order something else and I have literally had to put my hand up or even go up to the bar to get any attention from anyone. If you search these reviews you will see many many unhappy customers who have pointed out several awful things that have happened to them. Well I did pay for my meal today but only because I wouldn 't want a single thing from Matt who needs to work on his ego and manners if he wants to continue to work in the hospitality industry with any success. I wasn 't a valued customer as I am over 50, don 't drink as I am usually driving and have a small appetite he wants the big rowdy groups in there who drink a lot but at the end of the day it is just a pub! If you want really quality food and top customer service from every single member of staff go to Morans in the Bath Road in Cheltenham where they never fail to do their best at any time of the day and where the food really is freshly cooked. If I could give zero for The Old Elm I certainly would! I don 't usually write reviews but I could not let this behaviour go..."

"My friend and I were walking the Cotswold Way and had called into the tourist information centre and they recommended this place for lunch. It was fairly busy but only one person in front of me at the counter. My friend took a seat and I waited at the counter to order. I was then told very abruptly to ask my friend to move from the table and sit on the 2 seats in the window. I was told the table we had chosen was for 4 people! My friend moved to the window to find the seats were high bar stools. We had been walking for 10 miles and the thought of sitting on high stools did not appeal. So my friend found another table which was 2 seats which looks more comfortable. The very rude Middle Aged lady serving caused a scene by shouting across to my friend telling her not to sit there. She then pointed to the sign and very rudely told me I am supposed to wait when all I had done was stand and wait to order. We just gathered our things and walked out. They obviously didn’t like the fact we were walkers and had rucksacks taking up space in their small cafe area. I was very shocked and can honestly say I have never experienced such bad customer service. Fortunately we found a lovely bakery round the corner who even though they were busy found us seats and we had a delicious lunch there. I would avoid this place like the plague. I was not surprised to read very similar reviews of this place. It seems they have no idea how to serve people!"
