"Visited today with my wife and month old daughter whilst we are on holiday in the area. We didn’t have a booking but this wasn’t a problem, the staff were friendly throughout and accommodating about lack of booking. We asked for a children’s menu...(website says they have one) but we were advised it’s was the basket meals menu which they advertise as selling to guests sat outside, they did also mention they could make a smaller portion of something from the adult menu. The basket meals menu is mainly fried food and chips, the kind you might share with friends over drinks, I wouldn’t call it a children’s menu. To me a children’s meal should at least come with some option of veg/salad/beans and ideally not be fried, plus the chips that arrived with her chicken bites were salted, not great for little ones. We didn’t make a fuss as for one meal as a treat we weren’t unduly worried but it would put me off going back with children. They also charged the full basket meal price so no reduction for children. Our meals, fried garlic mushrooms, salt and pepper chicken goujons to start then a beef burger and chicken burger as mains, arrived promptly and were generous portions. The food was fine, nothing spectacular just average pub food. The main issue on our visit and the thing that made the whole meal much more stressful and unenjoyable was the flies, we were sat in what they called the restaurant area and our whole meal start to finish was disrupted by or flies continuously buzzing round us, trying to land on our food and land on us, not fun. I accept that or flies can be around when doors or windows are open and it’s hard to stop them coming when food is around but or round us and more to be seen in the room seems too many to me, it really put us off especially when they were landing on our daughter. At the point of eating the meal we didn’t raise the issue as we couldn’t see that anything could be done about it and I’m sure the staff are not a fan of the flies either. I did raise the issue whilst paying and was told they knew about the problem and were doing their best to solve it, sadly for us it would stop me wanting to go again. All in all not a great experience and the food whilst nice enough wasn’t good enough to overcome the issue of the flies and the lack of a proper children’s menu."

"Came across this cafe by accident just at the right time. Tastefully decorated and clean with the added touch of framed napkins of pencil drawings by a Friday regular to the cafe. Fish and chips were amazing with a side helping of mushy peas if desired. Tea in a beautiful matching teaset. All served by a friendly, personable young gentlemen. My husband said the Victoria sponge was fabulous. And I think the poshest toilet in a cafe I’ve ever seen! Definitely on our map for a place to revisit."

"During a recent visit to the village we decided to pay the 'local ' a visit. Having looked on other social media sites, it was uncertain as to whether the pub was even open! One page ranted on about various reasons why the pub had closed!! Another, more recent page indicated it had reopened!! On a lovely evening we ventured into the 'beer garden '. It is completely overgrown and uncared for! The view to the pub was one of dirty windows, curtains hanging off the rails and a general feel of not caring. Our drinks were a pint of Bombardier and a glass of wine. Beer tasted off (not drunk and left on the table). The glass of wine was served in a lipstick marked glass! Would I eat here? Definitely no!! Come on new people!! Show some care and attention!!"

"After booking a half term family holiday through Hoseasons the kids were really looking forward to their first holiday this year due to Covid 19 and lockdown. We arrived quite late on a Friday at 8pm after driving there straight after work and went to the main Cowden holiday park reception but it was closed, I was then told by the bar staff at the holiday park pub to go to the cross keys pub down the road to collect keys for the caravan from there. I collected the keys from the pub and was then told that the caravan was sited behind the cross keys pub with several other caravans, which I thought was odd as we had booked to stay at Cowden holiday park which this didn’t really seem to be part of. On entering the caravan (no 10) the holiday started to get a lot worse!! Everything in the caravan was either sticky or dirty and the carpet to the living area was half missing! (See picture). The Sofa to the living area was well worn and also felt sticky and smelled really bad!! As it was getting late by this point and travelling some way to get there we decided to clean the caravan surfaces with anti bacterial spray and try to sort it out with reception in the morning. We went to the main reception in the morning at Cowden holiday park and told the receptionist about the situation and was told there were no more available caravans due to half term break and the only option would be to get a refund, which we ended up taking! Not only did this leave my children upset and without a holiday that they had been looking forward to, but to let a family with children stay in a dirty caravan during Covid Pandemic peak times and to have not even attempted to clean the surfaces, you people should be ashamed of yourself!! Absolutely pathetic standards!! To be honest I wouldn’t have let a dog stay in this caravan!!"
