"I know that cancellation policies are in place for a reason, for the 'no shows ' and for people who do not respect the 24 hour cancellation policy. I can only assume that this is the reason that this establishment has this in place. Sadly, on the morning of the booking, I had to rush my father to A and E. My husband rang to let the restaurant know as soon as we knew that we would not make it. This was because we cared and wanted them to be informed as soon as possible and provide them with the opportunity of securing another booking. My husband rang at his earliest opportunity which was about 9.30 am. We were aware that the restaurant does not open until 12 but we wanted to reach them as quickly as possible. The answering machine came on so my husband kept trying until he eventually got hold of someone. Once my father’s condition stabilised, I also emailed the restaurant to extend our sincere apology and to explain the situation. During the telephone conversation I am speechless not about the non-refundable deposit) but about how the restaurant responded. Even if the manager was not prepared to change our booking to another day, could she not have been more kind with her response? At least 'a sorry to hear about your father, but unfortunately... ' The whole telephone manner was rude, abrupt, and uncaring. I understand that business is business but please have a heart as well. This is why I am writing this review. We were not being rude or abrupt. This was about a family emergency and we were letting you know whilst in the midst of it all. This was a booking for two people, not a party of 10. Does the restaurant not operate a waiting list? Did they make every effort to find customers to replace our booking? Times are tough for many of us right now and a little bit of human kindness goes a long way whilst citing your well publicised terms and conditions."

"Awful service the staff were all laid around on the sofas on their phones when i walked in and all speaking indian around me and laughing and looking at me making me feel very uncomfortable. I may have been being paranoid but their attitude towards me backed up how I was feeling!!! The food tasted only slightly better than it looked (the sauce was like water and hardly any meat! I came to this restaurant as my favourite in Cullompton (noor sitara was closed that day.....won't make that mistake again!! Was more expensive and didnt look or taste anywhere near as good. Definitely won't come here again!"

"We stopped in Cullompton on our way elsewhere so that we could have a leg stretch after a long journey. After a walk around the town we saw The Bakehouse and being dog friendly decided to pop in. Friendly service and great atmosphere we decided to have something to eat as well as a drink. An americano and a luxury hot chocolate, with the hot chocolate actually being hot unlike so many places where it is lukewarm and you end up finishing it two minutes later. This was creamy and a good helping of marshmallows! We then ordered a bakehouse toastie consisting of cheddar and mozzarella with hogs bottom tomato and red onion chutney. It was like a meal in itself and a very impressive and fresh side salad. We also ordered the crispy fried halloumi wrap with rocket, peppers, red onion and chilli sauce. Again, a large serving with great side salad. Both meals freshly made and piping hot, so chance for them to cool down a bit and enjoy the surroundings of the premises. A great place and one we will be sure to visit again next time we pass through. Oh whilst I am a Costa coffee fan, which is just on the opposite side of the road, I implore people to support The Bakehouse team where you get freshly prepared on-site food and drink at prices more competitive than you will get in any major chain coffee house."

"Great local pub, serving traditional pub food, quality ingredients, and well presented/served. The staff are all really nice and attentive, service is quick with no fuss. My only issue was the desert menu! I wanted every single one and could only choose 2 (the Mrs wouldn't let me have 1 of each) I'll just have to keep going so I can try every one! "I never write a review as I always address face to face give you the opportunity to make good, but...One of the most vile tasting Chinese takeaways I have ordered. We had chicken satay which was a thick gelatinous bland tasteless sauce in my book not chicken satay at all , the crispy beef was again in a thick gelatinous vinergrey sauce the beef was tough and soggy as so much sauce and the Yung chow mein again bland and very cheap cuts of meat which reminded me of spam. I called them say I was unimpressed spoke to the owner who apologised and basically told me they have many happy customers and never had complaint about their food as they have always had same chef and cooked like this for years. If this was a restaurant I would have not eaten it and refused to pay. This was a Saturday night treat I will never make mistake again and in future avoid the China orchid in cullompton not that they cared anyway."
